Ep.922: Finland Has Faith In the Euro

Finland is, in many ways, the anti-Greece.
Like Greece, it is geographically far from the core Western European powers of Britain, France and Germany. And like Greece, it uses the euro currency. But unlike Greece, it is a model of sound governance and responsible use of debt.
Yet Finland’s economy is also not doing so great, with an 11.8 percent unemployment rate and with contracting gross domestic product in the last three years.
A number of American commentators have looked at Finland’s current economic troubles as a clear sign that what ails the eurozone is far deeper than profligate spending by the Greeks. Paul Krugman has made that case at The New York Times, Tim Worstall at Forbes and Matt O’Brien at The Washington Post.
Alexander Stubb, the Finnish finance minister, thinks they’re wrong. I brought this up with him recently in Espoo, the Helsinki suburb where he lives. His vigorously defense what the euro has done for Finland, and his comments help explain why elite opinion about the euro is so different on the two sides of the Atlantic.
There are three main causes of Finland’s economic weakness. Nokia has gone from the world’s largest mobile phone maker to an afterthought, costing thousands of Finnish jobs and many more when its supply network is counted. Demand for paper, another major export, has fallen. And the economy of neighboring Russia, with which Finland has deep trade ties, has collapsed because of plummeting oil prices and Western sanctions.
Because Finland has used the euro since its inception, the value of its currency cannot adjust in ways that would cushion the overall Finnish economy from those shocks. If Finland still had its old currency, the markka, it would have fallen in value on international markets. Suddenly other Finnish industries would have had a huge cost advantage over, say, German competitors, and they would have grown and created the jobs to help make up for those lost because of Nokia and the paper industry and Russian trade.
“Rubbish,” Mr. Stubb said. To evaluate the euro, you can’t just look at what he calls a current “rough patch” for the Finnish economy. You have to look at a longer time horizon. In his telling, the integration with Western Europe – of which the euro currency is a crucial element – deepened trade and diplomatic relations, making Finland both more powerful on the world stage and its industries better connected to the rest of the global economy. That made its people richer.
“In the early 1990s in the middle of a Finnish banking crisis and economic depression, we were a top 30 country in the world in per capita G.D.P.,” he said. “Then we opened up; we became members of the E.U. Now we’re always up there in G.D.P. per capita or whatever other measure you look at with Sweden, Denmark, Australia and Canada.”
As to whether the ability to devalue its currency would help deal with the current economic downturn, Mr. Stubb is similarly skeptical.
“Devaluation is a little like doping in sports,” he said. “It gives you perhaps a short-term boost, but in the long run, it’s not beneficial. Just like anyone else, we need structural reform, structural adjustment; we need to increase our competitiveness, and a little bit of luck.”

Palmerston, the cat who has lived at the Foreign Office for four and a half years, will trade in his London residence for retirement in the countryside, where his mouse-catching duties for the diplomats will come to an end.
Writing to the more than 100,000 followers on his Twitter feed, the black and white moggy, who once lived at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, said he wanted to spend more time relaxing away from the limelight.
"I have enjoyed climbing trees and patrolling the fields around my new home in the countryside," he wrote to the Foreign Office’s most senior civil servant, Simon McDonald, signing off with two paw prints.
"I will miss hearing the footsteps of an Ambassador and sprinting to my hideout to see who it is."

There will be no wider reshuffle as Larry the cat remains on Downing Street whilst fellow feline Gladstone retains his post at the finance ministry.

Ep.919: About animals - Florida man fights off gator to save dog

Trent Tweddale and his dog, Loki, are recovering after a Monday morning walk on their Florida farm turned vicious.
According to Tweddale, a nearly 13-foot gator grabbed his 6-year-old dog and pulled him into the water. Tweddale, a former Army staff sergeant, quickly reacted.
"I grabbed the dog’s collar to try to pull him back, and I ended up in a tug-of-war match with this gator, and the gator was not letting go," he said. "So I let go of the collar, and I got about knee-deep into the water and started pounding on the gator’s head until he eventually let go."
With the help of Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Tweddale has set a trap for the gator on his property. He said he won’t rest until he catches it.
"We love our dog a lot and I’d fight tooth and nail for him."

Fifteen animals were born during the two months that it shut its doors to visitors - three times more than usual, zoo officials said.
"The coronavirus spread at the same time that trips were expected at the zoo. They were cancelled and therefore the animals started to give birth," said zoo veterinarian Sami Khader.

In the monkey enclosure, usually bedeviled by miscarriages, one baboon gave birth, although she had little inclination to take care of the baby. "My father had to bring him to our house," said the vet’s daughter, Hind Khader. "I took care of him and gave him milk."

Welcome to 15mins.today the home of English Shadowing. I am your host Gavin, and this is InTense Episode 58.

Well guys we're on to the next chapter of our grammar section, and today we are starting with verbs. Now verbs are very important, just like nouns. If you do not have a verb in a sentence, it is not a valid sentence. Okay, so what are verbs? They are words that show what is happening, they show actions or state of being so, run they are very easy. Some are not so easy to spot, but anyway, so every sentence, to be a valid sentence, needs a verb. Now there are three basic types: action verbs, linking verbs, and helping verbs. And we also going to sub divide them into transitive and intransitive verbs. Today we're going to start with the first basic one action verbs, and these are easy: run, eat, write, think. So, there are verbs that show us something we can visibly see like, “I ran from here today.”, you saw the guy running and then they are verbs that you know happen in your head, you can't see it. “I loved the movie.” or “I thought he was beautiful.” Thought is the verb and we can't see it. OK, so today we're going to start with action verbs, and we are just going to start with the basic things again. I will underline the verbs in the transcript, but these will be basic ones and without further ado, let's get cracking.

Ep.918: Living in Hawaii, Aiming for Mars

On the way to Mars, Neil Scheibelhut stopped by a store for mouthwash and dental floss. “We’re picking up some last-minute things,” he said via cellphone on a recent afternoon.
Mr. Scheibelhut is not actually an astronaut leaving the earth. But three hours later, he and five other people stepped into a domeshaped building on a Hawaiian volcano where they will live for eight months, mimicking a stay on the surface of Mars.
This is part of a study financed by NASA, the American space agency. The goal of the Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation, or Hi-Seas for short , is to examine how well people, isolated from civilization, can get along and work together.
When astronauts finally head toward Mars years from now — NASA has tentatively scheduled the 2030s — it will be a long and lonely journey: about six months to Mars, 500 days on the planet, and then six months home.
“Right now, the psychological risks are still not completely understood and not completely corrected for,” said Kimberly Binsted of the University of Hawaii at Manoa and the principal investigator for the project. (She is not in the dome.) “NASA is not going to go until we solve this.”
Isolation can lead to depression. Personality conflicts can escalate over the months.
“How do you select and support astronauts for a mission that will last two to three years in a way that will keep them healthy and performing well?” Dr. Binsted said.
Or as Mr. Scheibelhut put it: “I’m so interested to see how I react. ‘I don’t know’ is the short answer. I think it could go a lot of different ways.”
Several mock Mars missions have been conducted in recent years. A simulation in Russia in 2010 and 2011 stretched 520 days . Four of the six volunteers developed sleep disorders and became less productive as the experiment progressed. The Mars Society, a nonprofit group that promotes human spaceflight, has run short simulations in the Utah desert since 2001 and is planning a oneyear simulation in the Canadian Arctic beginning in 2015.
Hi-Seas has conducted two four-month missions, and next year, six more people will reside for one year inside the dome, a two-story building 11 meters in diameter with about 140 square meters of space. It sits in an abandoned quarry at an altitude of 2,440 meters on Mauna Loa.
The six crew members in the Hi-Seas dome are largely cut off. Their communications to the world outside the dome are limited to email, and each message is delayed by 20 minutes before being sent, simulating the lag for communications to travel from Mars to Earth and vice versa.
On a real mission, the lag time would be considerably shorter as Mars and Earth moved closer together but, Dr. Binsted said, “We went with the worst case because we’re trying to solve the worstcase situation.”
The crew members are granted some exceptions. They can check a few websites, like their banking accounts, to ensure that their earth lives do not fall apart while they are away. There is also a cellphone for emergency communications .
Some 150 people applied to participate. Dr. Binsted said the three men and three women were chosen to have a mix of experience and backgrounds similar to those of NASA astronauts.
Mr. Scheibelhut, 38, had worked on the first Hi-Seas mission as part of the support crew. “I thought it would be really cool to be part of what’s going on inside,” he said.
Each crew member is receiving round-trip airfare to Hawaii, a $11,500 stipend, and food and lodging.
The goal is to maintain cohesion among the crew members, but that can lead to problems. “They become more independent when they are more cohesive,” Dr. Binsted said, and such a crew could spar with mission control.
The researchers will also be looking for signs of “third-quarter syndrome.” At the beginning of the mission, the experience is new and exciting. Then, in the second quarter of the mission, people fall into routines. Near the end, people can look forward to getting out and returning to the real world.
In the middle, there can be a stretch when routines turn into tedium without end. “That third quarter can be a bit of a bummer,” Dr. Binsted said.
Like real astronauts, the Hi- Seas crew will be busy performing a variety of scientific work, including excursions outside the dome in spacesuits.
“If you’re going to keep people in a can for eight months, you want to get as much science out of them as possible,” Dr. Binsted said. “It also means NASA gets a lot of bang for their buck.”

Ep.917: About the US - U.S. Military Recruitment On Twitch

The United States Army has its own esports team, USArmyEsports, that regularly streams video games like Call of Duty and League of Legends while chatting with viewers about life in the military and providing links to sign up.
With the U.S. Navy and Air Force joining the army in creating esports teams earlier this year, the military has turned towards gaming as a way to connect with potential recruits.
"Esports is just an avenue to start a conversation," explains Maj. Gen. Frank Muth in an interview with ThinkTech Hawaii. "We have a shared passion for e-sports, and we share that passion with the youth of America."
Despite the intention behind the initiative, having military personnel become Twitch streamers has already caused problems with Twitch. Civil liberties groups have criticized the military’s Twitch channels for banning commenters mentioning U.S. war crimes.

Dr. Anthony Fauci’s ceremonial first-pitch kicking off the 2020 Major League Baseball season was off target, but a baseball card to commemorate the occasion wound up being a home run with fans.
The Topps NOW baseball card featuring Fauci set an all-time print record for the company, selling 51,512 cards in just 24 hours, Topps said on Monday.
The back of the card described the Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases as an "ardent Washington Nationals fan" and described his first-pitch before the Nationals took on the Yankees as "a strong effort."
The day after his less than stellar opening pitch, Fauci joked during an online event that he had practiced throwing a couple of days before the game but when he went out on the mound it looked like the catcher was 200 feet away.

Ep.916: See That Fridge on the Sidewalk? It’s Full of Free Food
A lonely refrigerator sits on a Bronx sidewalk at 242nd Street and Broadway. It’s not trash.
Painted in bright yellows, purples, oranges and blues, the fridge has “Free Food” written in bubble letters across its freezer, with the same in Spanish, “Comida Gratis,” on its side.
Selma Raven makes good on that promise. She doesn’t ask prodding questions of those who visit the fridge. She sometimes chats as she disinfects the unit, which is plugged into a socket inside a restaurant, and stocks it with fresh produce and ready-made meals.
Mothers, home attendants, nursing assistants and the unemployed stop by the fridge to pick up food, Raven said. At first, some residents were skeptical; even cabdrivers told her it wouldn’t work. Now, they’re allies.
Community-led, free-food refrigerators, sometimes nicknamed “friendly fridges,” have been popping up on city sidewalks since February.
When the coronavirus pandemic and stay-at-home orders halted New York City’s economy, many residents — some suddenly out of work, and others sick with the illness — struggled to fill their own refrigerators.
At community refrigerators, anyone is welcome to take whatever they want and leave behind food they don’t need, like extra produce. Many volunteers who clean and stock the refrigerators daily ask local restaurants and stores to donate unused or unsold food items instead of throwing them away.
The goals are simple: Reduce food waste and feed the community.
Food insecurity and waste have plagued both New Yorkers and the environment long before the pandemic. In the city, about 2 million people, or 1 in every 4 New Yorkers, are food insecure.
About 30% of the country’s food supply is wasted, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
A network of New Yorkers collaborating with In Our Hearts, an activist group, have set up and maintained at least 14 fridges, which are plugged into local bodegas, restaurants or homes with permission.
The volunteers who tend to many of the free-food refrigerators in New York communicate with one another on Signal, the encrypted messaging app, to coordinate the distribution of food from organizations like Universe City, an aquaponic farm and work space in Brownsville, Brooklyn.
Thadeaus Umpster, an organizer with In Our Hearts, said that people have been giving away refrigerators through Instagram. In February, Umpster set up the group’s first refrigerator in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.
As the pandemic worsened in March and April, other people asked to get involved. It also seemed that the more refrigerators New Yorkers saw on social media like Instagram, the more new ones appeared.
In recent weeks, Umpster has been distributing food to other fridges and answering calls from people across the world who want to start similar projects.
