Bring here or Take here?
Welcome to 15mins.today, the home of English Shadowing. I’m your host, Gavin and this is In-Tense Episode 27.

Hi guys, in this episode we will be looking at something quite simple. It is two words “take and bring.” Now, first off, I have heard many North Americans using bring, “bring here, bring there.” I myself speak more British English and I was taught “bring here, take there.” So it all depends on where you are, your location. If you are here and you are taking something somewhere else you are taking it. If you are there and you are bringing this thing here, you bring it here, take it there.

So let's do an example, “I will take my pen to work on Monday, and on Monday I will bring the pen back home.” What is my location? I'm at home.

Great, so as I said some North Americans I have heard they bring here, they bring everywhere, ”I bring it home, I bring it to work,” it doesn't matter. So as I said it's just a matter of taste let's do the questions.

    Drill Sentences:
Did Jane take the report to work? Yes, she took the report to work.
Did Jane take the report to work? No, she did not take the report to work.

Will John bring the microphone on Monday? Yes, he will bring the microphone on Monday.
Will John bring the microphone on Monday? No, he will not bring the microphone on Monday.

Will Peter and Jane take the laptop with them? Yes, they will take the laptop with them.
Will Peter and Jane take the laptop with them? No, they will not take the laptop with them.

Did you bring me a drink? Yes, I brought you a drink.
Did you bring me a drink? No, I did not bring you a drink.

Did you take the tickets with you? Yes, I took the tickets with me.
Did you take the tickets with you? No, I did not take the tickets with me.

Will you bring me some silk from Thailand? Yes, I will bring you some silk from Thailand.
Will you bring me some silk from Thailand? No, I will not bring you some silk from Thailand.

Did you bring Peter a present? Yes, I brought Peter a present.
Did you bring Peter a present? No, I did not bring Peter a present.

Will you take your dog with you? Yes, I will take my dog with me.
Will you take your dog with you? No, I will not take my dog with me.

Do you take lunch to work? Yes, I take lunch to work.
Do you take lunch to work? No, I do not take lunch to work.

Did Anna bring a notebook? Yes, she brought a notebook.
Did Anna bring a notebook? No, she did not bring a notebook.

Will you bring me some food when you come home? Yes, I will bring you some food when I come home.
Will you bring me some food when you come home? No, I will not bring you some food when I come home.

Will you take your daughter to work on Monday? Yes, I will take my daughter to work on Monday.
Will you take your daughter to work on Monday? No, I will not take my daughter to work on Monday.

Well guys, there you go. Keep practicing and repeat and remember “take there, bring here.” It is all about where you are. Anyways, have a great day and catch you next time, bye!

722: Late winter brings fears for changing of color in Aowanda

Nov. 8 is lidong, the day that officially represents the start of winter. Yet temperatures in central Taiwan are still high during the day time, and it hasn’t rained for quite some time. Very few of the leaves on the green maple trees in the Aowanda National Forest Recreation Area, a popular site for people wanting to view the maple leaves, have turned red, and people may have to wait until mid-November to December to view red maple leaf scenery. Due to the lack of rain for a period of time, staff at the Nantou Forest District Office are concerned that if the dry spell continues and the maple leaves do not change color, the leaves will just wilt away.

In another two weeks, we will reach lidong, the 19th of the 24 solar terms, which means we will have already entered winter. Unfortunately, from the beginning of fall, day time temperatures have remained high, reaching 30 degrees Celsius at noon. Even though the cold weather is late in coming, Nature lovers are already rubbing their hands in anticipation and making their plans for the maple leaf viewing trips, and rooms for Saturdays in November for the popular maple leaf viewing spot the Aowanda National Forest Recreation Area have been booked up the minute they have come available online. Visitors are still going to the area to see the red maple leaves.

According to staff at the district office, only a very small number of the leaves on the green maple trees in the park have turned red, as the weather has yet to turn cool. They say that many tourists have been trying to find out when the leaves are expected to change color this year, but the weather is still warm and, going by the experience of previous years, one would normally expect the colors to change on most of the trees between the middle of November and December, when temperatures would usually vary by up to 15 degrees Celsius over the course of the day. If temperatures fall to as low as eight degrees Celsius or colder in one day, the maple leaves will change color; if, however, temperatures fail to drop, the optimal time for maple leaf viewing will be delayed.

The office staff added that they are currently more concerned about the continued lack of rainfall. If the dry weather continues, the maple leaves might not actually change color at all, and will just die off.

721: About Science: Chemical found in spinach has the same effect as steroids and should be banned for athletes, scientists say

Maybe Popeye was onto something when he ripped open a can of spinach for beating up the bad guys.

Scientists in Germany say, ecdysterone, a chemical found in spinach is close to steroids and has a similar effect on humans. Researchers at Freie Universität Berlin ran a 10-week test on nearly 50 athletes and found athletes who took capsules of ecdysterone increased their strength by up to three times.

The capsules the athletes were given were the equivalent of about nine pounds of spinach but researchers say the capsules could be used as a performance enhancing drug. The study has called on the World Anti-Doping Authority to dig further into ecdysterone and wants the chemical added to the list of banned substances for athletes.

Genes, yes, but obesity pandemic mostly down to diet:study

A three-fold jump since 1975 in the percentage of adults worldwide who are obese has been driven mainly by a shift in diet and lack of exercise, but genes do play a role as well, according a large-scale study published Thursday.

For people genetically predisposed to a wider girth, these unhealthy lifestyles compounded the problem, resulting in an even higher rate of weight gain, researchers reported in The BMJ, a peer-reviewed medical journal.

To tease out the relative impact of environment and genes on obesity, scientists led by Maria Brandkvist at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology combed through data on nearly 120,000 people in Norway whose height and weight were regularly measured between 1963 and 2008.

Adults began tipping the scales at significantly higher weights in the 1980s and 1990s, they found. Those born after 1970 were far more likely to have a substantially higher BMI as young adults than earlier generations.

720: About Internet Startups - Uber will ban passengers with low ratings

Uber passengers who habitually leave their trash behind and disrespect their drivers may soon get the boot.

The ride-hailing company announced Tuesday that riders with ratings that are ’’significantly below average’’ may lose access to the app, part of a rollout of the company’s updated community guidelines, which riders must abide by to continue using the service.

Uber, however, said that bans for bad behavior won’t come as a surprise to offending passengers. Riders will receive several notifications before they lose access to the app, the company said.

And they also will have opportunities to improve their rating to remain in good standing. Tips to boost a user’s rating include:’’encouraging polite behavior, avoiding leaving trash in the vehicle and avoiding requests for drivers to exceed the speed limit,’’ Uber said.

Kakao suspends online comments for entertainment articles Kakao

South Korea’s internet company Kakao said Friday that it would prevent users from posting malicious comments on its online entertainment news articles next month, pledging also to overhaul its search engine functionalities to address cyberbullying.

The measure came after mounting calls for the internet portal website to address cyberbullying targeting celebrities and people in general. The calls intensified after singer-turned-actress Sulli passed away last week in an apparent suicide. While the cause of death was not made public, it was widely believed Sulli had been suffering from depression.

Kakao, however, said the decision had not been made because of a single case and that there had been heated debate over the issue for a long time. The company also decided to suspend its “related search words” service for celebrities immediately for its messenger app, Kakao Talk.

719: Thai mangosteens a gigantic hit in Taiwan

It’s the sweet smell of success for Thai fruit exporters: Thai mangosteens have become an instant hit among Taiwanese consumers after the fruit went on sale there for the first time in 15 years, Department of Agriculture director-general Surmsuk Salakpetch said.

“The Taiwanese press reported that consumers queued up to buy mangosteen from Thailand,” she said. “The first lot of 980 kilogrammes was sold out in only 30 minutes.

”Each box of four mangosteens was sold at Bt200 (NT$203),” Surmsuk added.

“The unexpected positive response has proved a good opportunity for Thai exporters,” she said. “Since September 5, Thai entrepreneurs have exported 100,533kg of mangosteens to Taiwan, worth more than Bt20 million.”

According to the director-general, Taiwan’s import standards require Thai mangosteens to undergo a steam treatment for decontamination and eradication of fruit flies – the latter being the reason why Taiwan had been rejecting fruits from Thailand for the past 15 years.

“We have developed a technique to treat mangosteens at 46 degrees Celsius for 58 minutes, which is the optimal temperature and time so the taste of the fruits is not ruined, while meeting the requirements of the Taiwan Plant and Animal Disease Prevention and Quarantine Office,” said Surmsuk.

“I am glad that although Taiwanese people haven’t been able to enjoy Thai mangosteens for 15 years, they still remember the exquisite taste of this ‘queen of fruit’,” she said. “This makes me confident that there’s a bright future ahead for Thai fruit exporters, who are aiming to capture the Taiwanese market.”

718: For Britain, the Clock Is Ticking on Carbon Emissions
718: For Britain, the Clock Is Ticking on Carbon Emissions

In the shadow of a noisy, turbulent Brexit, another epic transformation is underway in Britain.

A leading industrial power that built itself on coal and colonialism, Britain is now trying to pivot away from the fossil fuels that powered the industrial age. The government has set a legally binding target to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Some of that change is already in motion: The country is fast ditching coal in favor of wind energy and gas. And this summer, for the first time in more than 130 years, it went two weeks without burning one lump of coal.

The new net-zero target, though, demands a far bigger shift that will likely change everything from the way Britons heat their homes to how they get to work to what food they grow and eat.

The good news for Britain is that climate action enjoys widespread political support in an otherwise polarized society. The governing Conservatives proposed the net zero target, while the Labour Party recently one-upped them by calling for a 2030 deadline.

“There’s a high degree of consensus that we need to do something, and the U.K. has a moral duty to lead,” said Bryony Worthington, a member of the House of Lords and executive director of the European branch of the Environmental Defense Fund. “We led the industrial revolution.”

Britain’s historical emissions are the fifth highest in the world, according to an analysis by Carbon Brief, a British website that covers climate science and policy.

Nick Bridge, Britain’s senior climate envoy, said his country wants to position itself as “a global green hub.”

Bold promise, meet the mess known as Brexit.

Britain’s economy is slowing precisely at a time when the country will need to invest the equivalent of at least 1% of its gross domestic product to meet its net zero target, according to the Committee on Climate Change, a government advisory body. Moreover, at a time of peak political dysfunction, the government has not implemented the policies needed to get to net-zero, nor mapped out how it will pay for the transition.

“Brexit is a horrible distraction,” Worthington said. “Politically there’s not enough oxygen to even have a conversation.”

At the moment, the country is not on track to meet its earlier target for an 80% reduction in emissions from 1990 levels.

Alex Kazaglis, an economist who served on the Committee on Climate Change said, to get net-zero, Britain needs to generate much more electricity than ever before — all of it from non-fossil fuel sources.

In-Tense #026: When to use "a" and "an"
Welcome to 15mins.today the home of English Shadowing. I'm your host Gavin and this is inTense Episode 26. Well guys, today we're going to be looking at something quite interesting.

We are going to be looking at “a and an.” Now most of you were probably taught, like I was that, if you want to know the difference it is basically, you look if a word starts with a e i o u so then you use “an” and those are the vowels.

If you use a consonant then it starts with “a.” So technically what we've been taught all these years, even myself is wrong, it is not whether it's starts with an A E I O U that designates whether to use an or a. It is actually whether it has the phonetic sound of a e i o u, so it is very interesting, even I have been taught wrong for all these years and that is amazing.

So it is the phonetic sounds that decides whether a word is a e i o u and that is the key. So for instance, “It is an MP3.” Even though the word “ MP3” starts with an “m” it sounds like “em.” Conversely if you look at a word like “ University” it sounds like a “ y” so we would say, “It is a university.” There you go, so let's get going with the questions!

Did Jane get a university education? Yes, she got a university education.
Did Jane get a university education? No, she did not get a university education.

Did the lunch take an hour? Yes, the lunch took an hour.
Did the lunch take an hour? No, the lunch did not take an hour.

Did you copy an MP3? Yes, I copied an MP3.

717: Indonesia to propose spice trail for UNESCO World Heritage list

The Indonesian archipelago has been known throughout history for spices, from nutmeg, cloves, ginger, pepper to cinnamon, that were introduced to the world by the nation’s sailors in the past.

In regard to the spices that have been sought after worldwide thanks to their distinctive tastes, aromas and health benefits, the Education and Culture Ministry has recommended the great story of the spice trail be recognized by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee (WHC), according to Kompas.

Nadjamuddin Ramly, the Education and Culture Ministry’s cultural heritage and diplomacy director general, told Kompas on Friday that his team was preparing the necessary documents for the spice trail’s submission to the WHC’s tentative list.

“After entering the tentative list, the spice trail could possibly be recommended to be inscribed as world cultural heritage,” said Nadjamuddin.

In October 2003, Indonesia signed the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage at a meeting in Paris.

At the time of writing, Indonesia has several sites inscribed on the World Heritage List, including the Borobudur and Prambanan temple compounds, the Sangiran early man site and Ombilin coal mine in the cultural category, as well as Komodo, Lorentz and Ujungkulon national parks and the tropical rainforests of Sumatra in the natural category.

Meanwhile, on the tentative list, which is an inventory of sites countries have proposed for consideration, Indonesia has 19 sites including the Tana Toraja traditional settlement, the prehistoric rock art area of Sangkulirang-Mangkalihat Karst and the old town of Jakarta and the four outlying islands of Onrust, Kelor, Cipir and Bidadari.
