531: Homelessness crisis: Thousands sleeping rough in cars across UK

Homelessness in the UK is at a record high with 170,000 families and individuals experiencing destitution, the charity Crisis has said. For every one person sleeping rough on the street, there is another living in a car or a tent, figures suggest.

Publishing the new research, Crisis insisted the underlying causes of homelessness could only be tackled by changes in government policy. The government said it is investing £1.2bn to alleviate the problem.

The new research on homelessness, carried out for Crisis by researchers at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, suggested: Homelessness increased every year between 2012 and 2017. 38,000 under-25s and 4,200 over-65s are estimated to be homeless. 12,300 people are sleeping rough and a similar number of people (12,000) are living in cars, tents or public transport - double the amount compared to 2012.

530: Worth the sting: Cuba’s scorpion pain remedy

Once a month for the last decade, Pepe Casanas, a 78-year-old Cuban farmer, has hunted down a scorpion to sting himself with, vowing that the venom wards off his rheumatism pains.

Researchers in Cuba have found that the venom of the blue scorpion, whose scientific name is Rhopalurus junceus, endemic to the Caribbean island, appears to have anti-inflammatory and pain relief properties, and may be able to delay tumor growth in some cancer patients.

"I put the scorpion where I feel pain," Casanas said while demonstrating his homemade pain relief with a scorpion that he found under a pile of debris on the patch of land he cultivates in Cuba’s western province of Pinar del Rio.

529: Some Asian nations feel betrayed by Korea for close ties with Vietnam

South Korea’s New Southern Policy, aimed at boosting ties with ASEAN nations, is backfiring because it is focused on Vietnam at the expense of the other nine members, Hankook Ilbo reported Thursday.

The newspaper quoted an ASEAN source as saying: "Korea is preoccupied with Vietnam. If this doesn’t change, the other members’ interests and goodwill toward Korea will cool down."

The paper quoted a source from an association of Korean businessmen as saying: "Some Malaysians feel a sense of betrayal toward Koreans." Malaysia’s loss to Vietnam is the main reason for it. Moreover, Korea is biased in Vietnam’s favor in terms of investment. Vietnam drew about 60 percent of Korea’s foreign investment cases destined for ASEAN in the first nine months of last year.

528: Start your engines: Electric scooter makers prepare to do battle in 2019
528: Start your engines: Electric scooter makers prepare to do battle in 2019

The Year of the Pig is shaping up to become a decisive year in the battle between producers of electric scooters. Leading manufacturer of gasoline-powered scooters, Kwang Yang Motor Co. (KYMCO), is predicting it will shift 50,000 electric scooters in the coming year and grab 50 percent market share of the electric scooter market by going head-to-head with established market leader Gogoro.

Due to the provision of government subsidies, electric scooters are able to be sold at a relatively low price point. This powerful incentive last year helped propel domestic sales of electric scooters to 82,400 units. Of these, Gogoro sold 72,100 units — double its sales volume for the previous year — enabling the company to grab 87 percent of the market share and cement its place as the market leader in Taiwan’s electric scooter market.

Meanwhile, KYMCO chief executive Ko Chun-pin says although the company only started selling electric scooters in the fourth quarter of last year, it has already shifted 7,296 units. Ko says he expects the electric scooter market will kick into high gear this year and says the company has already installed 1,642 of its Ionex fast charging stations, and says it will also install a further 278 Ionex energy stations.

Additionally, Ko says KYMCO will focus on popularizing the electric scooter and competing with the flagship brands of competitors for the young consumer segment. The company predicts that over 100,000 units of electric scooters will be sold this year, and hopes to achieve its year-end target of shifting 50,000 units, seizing 50 percent of market share.

In contrast, Gogoro is pursuing a saturation coverage strategy, blanketing the country with charging stations, which is being carried out at an average rate of two new station installations per day. The company says it now has 1,000 battery swapping GoStations in place nationwide and expects to have all of these fully operational by the end of this year’s first quarter. Once they all go live, Gogoro says that within the nation’s six largest cities, riders will never be more than an average of 5 minutes away from the nearest battery swap station, a strategy the company is using to defend its dominant market position.

Last year, China Motor Corp sold 5,768 of its emoving electric scooter, grabbing 7 percent market share. This year the company will release its first “white license plate” (heavy duty) electric scooter as well as a customizable light-weight model. The company forecasts sales of its electric scooter and electric bicycle models will come close to achieving its target of 17,000 units by the end of the year.

The three largest scooter vendors operating in Taiwan — Yamaha Motors, Aeon Motor and Motive Power Industry, which operates under the PGO brand — have all announced they will enter into a partnership with Gogoro to share its platforms, including its battery charging system, smart batteries and battery swap system, which will work in conjunction with their own electric scooter models, developed in-house. The three companies are all scheduled to release new models in the second half of this year.

Sanyang Motor will adopt fast-charging batteries developed by CPC Corp, Taiwan for its line of electric scooters currently under development, which the company says could hit the market as soon as the end of this year. With model development revving up, the year ahead looks set to be a lively one for Taiwan’s electric scooter market.

527: Spurning Erdogan’s Vision, Turks Leave in Droves, Draining Money and Talent
527: Spurning Erdogan’s Vision, Turks Leave in Droves, Draining Money and Talent

For 17 years, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan won elections by offering voters a vision of restoring the glories of Turkey’s Ottoman past. He extended his country’s influence with increased trade and military deployments, and he raised living standards with years of unbroken economic growth.

But after a failed 2016 coup, Erdogan embarked on a sweeping crackdown. Last year, the economy wobbled and the lira plunged soon after he won re-election with even greater powers. As cronyism and authoritarianism seep deeper into his administration, Turks are voting differently — this time with their feet.

They are leaving the country in droves and taking talent and capital with them in a way that indicates a broad and alarming loss of confidence in Erdogan’s vision, according to government statistics and analysts.

In the past two to three years, not only have students and academics fled the country, but also entrepreneurs, businesspeople, and thousands of wealthy individuals who are selling everything and moving their families and money abroad.

More than a quarter of a million Turks emigrated in 2017, according to the Turkish Institute of Statistics, an increase of 42 percent over 2016, when nearly 178,000 citizens left the country.

Turkey has seen waves of students and teachers leave before, but this exodus looks like a more permanent reordering of the society and threatens to set Turkey back decades, said Ibrahim Sirkeci, director of transnational studies at Regent’s University in London, and other analysts.

“The brain drain is real,” Sirkeci said.

The flight of people, talent and capital is being driven by a powerful combination of factors that have come to define life under Erdogan and that his opponents increasingly despair is here to stay.

They include fear of political persecution, terrorism, a deepening distrust of the judiciary and the arbitrariness of the rule of law, and a deteriorating business climate, accelerated by worries that Erdogan is unsoundly manipulating the economy to benefit himself and his inner circle.

The result is that, for the first time since the republic was founded nearly a century ago, many from the old moneyed class, in particular the secular elite who have dominated Turkey’s cultural and business life for decades, are moving away and the new rich close to Erdogan and his governing party are taking their place.
