    Dr. Jenny Wang, PhD,  (she/her) is a first-generation, Taiwanese American clinical psychologist and national speaker in Houston, Texas.

    She is also the creator of the Asians for Mental Health Directory and the founder of the Instagram community Asians for Mental Health, where she focuses on the destigmatization of mental health for Asian diaspora communities, the intersection of mental health, Asian American identity, and social justice to a community of 75K on Instagram.

    In this episode, we discuss what shame around mental health looks like, being a child of immigrants and breaking cycles, viewing conflict as a tool, boundaries during the holidays, and the views of mental health in Asian American communities.

  • 145: Dismantling Diet Culture & White Supremacy - with Dr. Hortencia Jimenéz, Sociology Professor & Health Coach

    Dr. Hortencia Jimenéz was born in Nayarit, Mexico and raised in the agriculture community of Watsonville CA. Dr. Jimenéz spent her childhood years working in the fields and learned the ethic of hard work and perseverance.

    She holds a BA, MA, and Ph.D in Sociology and is also a certified Health Coach and Fitness Instructor. Dr. Jimenez is a full time tenured Sociology professor teaching at a local community college in Monterey, County.

    Dr. Jimenéz signed a book contract with SAGE Publishing, a leading press in the social sciences to co-author an undergraduate textbook on Latinxs.

    Her research writing has appeared in academic publications and in 2017 she published her book Challenging Inequalities: Readings in Race, Ethnicity, and Immigration by Cognella Academic Publishing. 

    Dr. Jimenéz has numerous awards and recognitions for her work in the Latinx community. Her most recent recognitions include the Community Achievements Award by the Latino Network of Monterey County, a Certificate of Recognition by the Monterey County Board of Supervisors, and a Certificate of Recognition by California Legislature Assembly, Anna Caballero.

    Dr. Jimenéz transitioned to social media during the pandemic and created her instagram account as a response to the lack of Latinx representation and conversation of an anti-diet approach in the Health and Wellness industry. Her work centers on dismantling diet culture and helping Latinxs heal their relationship with food.

    In this episode, we discuss the connection between food and culture, how diet culture capitalizes off of silencing one's culture, breaking generational cycles, honoring our ancestors, and more.

    Katrina Leggins is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, psychotherapist, and self-care educator. She is an Oklahoma Native who received both her Bachelors and Masters degree in Social Work from the University of Oklahoma. 

    She has eight years of experience working in community mental health and school-based settings providing therapy for teens, adults, and families and has recently transitioned to work independently. 

    Katrina is the owner and founder of  K. Nicole Writing LLC, an informational and inspirational platform that helps motivate individuals through mental health education, empowerment, and inspiration.

    Her services offer public speaking and group workshops for adolescents, teens, and adults focused on mental wellness and self-care. Along with these services, Katrina runs a t-shirt apparel line and provides mental health products that help to raise awareness for self-care and mental health.

    She is also one of the founders of “Becoming The Full Package”, a workshop series launched in 2017 in the state of Oklahoma that teaches girls and young women ways to manage their mental health, wellness, self-image, and embrace their beauty.

    In this episode, we discuss the challenging parts of self-care, religion and mental health, the perfectionistic view of self-care, self-care within the Black community, taking care of one's self during the holidays, and more.
