"Therapy is not something that anyone needs, but it is something we all deserve."
-Dené Logan, Marriage and Family Therapist
This week I sit down with Dené Logan, a marriage and family therapist with a specialization in depth psychology. Dené is the author of "Sovereign: A Guide to Healing Relationships by Reclaiming the Masculine and Feminine Within." Dené shares her unique perspective on how depth psychology, often referred to as the psychology of the soul, can guide us to foster healthier relationships. Dené shares insights from her experience as a marriage and family therapist, emphasizing the importance of personal responsibility in relationships and the need for individuals to reclaim their authentic selves. We discuss the rise of the feminine in society and the significance of understanding healthy versus wounded energetics in both men and women. We also talk about the challenges of finding the right therapist and the value therapy has had on our personal growth.

In this episode, I interview Lindsey Cormack, associate professor of political science and director of the diplomacy lab at Stevens Institute of Technology, and author of "How to Raise a Citizen."
We discuss the importance of teaching children about politics and civic engagement. Lindsey explains that civics education is often deprioritized in schools, leading to a lack of understanding among adults. She emphasizes the need for parents to take on the responsibility of teaching their children about citizenship and government.
Lindsey outlines five key skills that children should learn:
-how to register to vote,
-the difference between primary and general elections,
-understanding federalism,
-reading the constitution,
-and being comfortable with having hard conversations.
We also touch on the misconceptions around the United States being a democracy versus a constitutional republic.
From understanding the basics of government structure to the importance of voting and critical thinking, this episode is packed with insights and actionable advice. Whether you're a parent, educator, or simply someone looking to become a better citizen, this conversation is a must-listen. I certainly learned A LOT!

Sometimes there's just too much good content for one episode, or we veer off on a different topic. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't get to hear it! That's where WeSTAT Bonus comes in.
This time it's with Gila Pfeffer, author of Nearly Departed.
Our conversation touches on how Gen Xers, influenced by a mix of analog and digital experiences, have become bold and unapologetic in expressing their thoughts. We explore the cultural shifts, including the impact of MTV, that have empowered us to find community and support in ways previous generations couldn't have imagined.

This week I welcome back humor writer and memoirist Gila Pfeffer, the author of "Nearly Departed: Adventures in Loss, Cancer, and Other Inconveniences."
Gila shares her journey from losing her parents to cancer, discovering she carried the BRCA1 gene, and undergoing a preventative double mastectomy that turned out to be life-saving. Through humor and resilience, Gila tells me how she uses her experiences to advocate for breast cancer awareness and prevention. She also opens up about the role of her Orthodox Jewish faith in her life and writing, offering listeners a unique perspective on community and ritual.
We explore the importance of self-advocacy, the power of knowledge, and how small acts of courage can lead to significant personal growth.

Well, WeSTAT community, we did it. Today marks the completion of season five, the season of evolution, the first season on my own. And I thought we should take a look back to see all that has happened this season.
After 30 episodes, what worked? What didn't? I'll tell you what I think, and maybe you can let me know if you agree or want to add to the list!
Plus we re-visit what several guests said about what evolution means to them.
It's a great trip down memory lane and a celebration of another season of We Should Talk About That!

Not following the expected path isn't necessarily a recipe for success in a city like Washington, D.C., but that is exactly what my guest this week, Deesha Dyer, did. At the age of 31, working full time and in community college part time, she took a chance on herself and applied for a White House internship in the Obama administration. And thank goodness she did, because she quickly found herself zipping up the ranks until she became the White House social secretary, where she worked until 2017.
There's a lot we should talk about with Deesha. From imposter syndrome to embracing who you are even if it makes other people uncomfortable, we cover a wide range of topics. And I'm all the better for it!
About my guest:
Deesha Dyer is an award-winning strategist, on-the-ground community organizer, and executive operations expert. She served as the White House social secretary during the Obama administration and is currently the founder and CEO of social impact agency, Hook & Fasten. She curated and instructed a study course called Imposter to Impact at the Harvard Kennedy School. Deesha’s entertaining and engaging style of storytelling allows her to inspire audiences around the world. She co-founded and operates organization, beGirl.world Global Scholars, which tackles the racial disparity in study abroad. Her book, Undiplomatic: How My Attitude Created the Best Kind of Trouble, can be found here

Mother's Day was yesterday, so to celebrate, I gave myself the weekend off! There's no new interview content for you today, BUT I do have a story for you.
For those who know me personally, you'll already know this story, but for the rest of you, enjoy this personal journey to free my trapped dry cleaning.
More interviews will resume next week, but remember, season five will soon come to a close: 6/3/24

In January I participated in a women's healing retreat with the Mystic Chics. a healing group of 3 modern medicine women, 2 sisters and an aunt, who are passionate about awakening feminine power using multiple modalities of healing via energy, music, sound, movement and more. I'm not a total "woo" person, but I'm also not a total cynic. Let's say I fall somewhere in between-we'll call it curious. So I asked one of the Chics, Audrey Herrick, to come on the show to talk about my experience and energy healing as a whole.Support the show

Have you heard of synesthesia?
It is when your brain routes sensory information through multiple unrelated senses, causing you to experience more than one sense simultaneously. Some examples include tasting words or linking colors to numbers and letters.
My guest this week, Emily Barth Isler, is an author of essays and children's books, including the middle grade novels AfterMath and The Color of Sound, which was published March 5, 2024. The Color of Sound features a character who, like Emily, has synesthesia. It has received starred reviews from both Publishers Weekly and the School Library Journal.
I first met Emily on my other podcast, Neuroversity, to talk about her first book, AfterMath, which is an award-winning middle grade novel about grief, resilience, friendship, math, and mime. Emily and I quickly realized that there were so many things we should talk about that I promised to get her on WeSTAT and the release of her new book seemed like the perfect fit.
