Up-and-coming distillers, things that I wish I knew when I got into bourbon, and what I prefer to drink in the fall - these are just a few of the topics we cover in this month's Q&A episode! If you'd like to have a question answered about whiskey, the podcast, or just my life/opinions/etc, you can submit it through Patreon to be first in line, or on my Instagram Story every Wednesday (@Whiskey_Noobs). Our repeat-Guest-Noob Zack is back, and he is helping us learn a thing or two about bourbon! People always ask me about what gives different bourbons different flavors, and I almost always make sure that the mash bill is part of my answer. Specifically, how much wheat and/or rye is in it. In order to really nail down the difference between wheat and rye in a bourbon's mash bill, Zack and I walk through a blind tasting of Green River Bourbon vs Green River Wheated bourbon, which have identical mash bills except for one difference: the wheated replaces rye with wheat.

Why are some bourbons so expensive? Sometimes it's a quality thing, sometimes it's a marketing thing, sometimes it's both. In order to break down some of the factors that affect the cost of a whiskey, I sit down and do a blind tasting and talk about the most important aspects of a whiskey (in terms of cost drivers). Of course, I do also break down OTHER cost drivers, like packaging, marketing, the Bourbon-Bubble, etc.
The 12 whiskeys that could have been selected for this episode were: Woodford Reserve Double Oaked, Wild Turkey 101, Wyoming Whiskey, Rabbit-Hole Cavehill, Bowman Brothers Small Batch, Buffalo Trace, Middle West Spirits Bourbon, Four Roses Small Batch Select, Larceny Barrel Proof, Cooper's Craft Barrel Reserve, Eagle Rare, and Weller Antique 107. If you don't want to know what I am tasting, stop reading now!
This episode features a full, in depth, blind review of Rabbit-Hole Cavehill.

How do barrel picks work? What is it like to actually pick out a single barrel from a distillery? In this episode, you get a taste of exactly that. Ryan (@ThatOneDudeRyan) and I walk through an ACTUAL barrel pick step by step, and discuss what barrel picks are, why they are trendy in the world of bourbon, and more.

So much of what we looked at so far has been from the perspective of the bourbon loving community. Tim (@thewhiskyinfluencer) found his way into the whiskey loving community by very different means: through scotch whisky. Listen in as a bourbon drinker and a scotch drinker come together to figure out the similarities and differences in our perspective on whiskey. Of course, we also walk through a full review of Bruichladdich's Classic Laddie, and Unpeated Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

Blind tastings are by far one of the best ways to put bias aside and learn about a whiskey. TX and Brothers Bond Bourbon have both always had a banana flavor to them that I thought made them very similar - but is that actually the case? To find out, I put them side by side in this blind tasting that I walk through with recurring guest noob Bryce.

How do you get into drinking Rye Whiskey, and what can you expect from it? In this episode, not only do I review Still Austin's "The Artist" Straight Rye Whiskey, but I also walk through 7 other whiskeys that changed my perspective on rye and give some tips for those who are struggling to get into drinking Rye Whiskey.
The seven whiskeys include Bulleit Rye, Traverse City Whiskey Company's Barrel Proof Rye, Middle West Spirits Dark Pumpernickel Rye, Sazerac Rye, Wheel Horse Rye, Redwood Empire's Rocket Top Rye, and Hard Truth Distilling's Sweet Mash Rye.

The Kentucky Bourbon Festival happens every year in Bardstown, Kentucky. This year, I had the good fortune of attending and trying the plethora of whiskeys that were there, talking to the distillers, and a whole lot more. From what to expect when you get there, to whether or not I'd buy the tickets, in this review full review of the Kentucky Bourbon Festival, I cover it all. If you have any questions that I did not answer, please don't hesitate to submit them for a future Q&A episode! Check out the festival at https://www.kybourbonfestival.com/
