Google Earth has announced an exciting new update that shows how the planet has changed across nearly 40 years.
Google Earth collected 24 million satellite photos from the past 37 years that were used to make Timelapse, a map that shows the Earth changing, both because of humans and nature itself.
Using Google Earth, Timelapse lets you choose any part of the planet you'd like to watch and see how it has changed every year since 1984. To help better understand why those changes are happening, Google Earth has also developed five "guided tours" for Timelapse.
Warming Planet shows the effects of climate change, like melting ice in Greenland, or the top of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, which has gone from being covered in snow to having almost none at all.
Sources of Energy lets you see how producing energy affects the planet, including both fossil fuels and renewable sources. With Changing Forests, you can visit the Amazon rainforest in Bolivia and watch large parts of it become farms. Or you can see natural forests being cut down to make space for palm trees in Indonesia. These trees are grown for palm oil, which is used to make many everyday products, from food to soap.
You can also watch how cities are changing and developing with Urban Expansion, or see how nature is always changing by itself with Fragile Beauty.
