Japan has started to discharge radioactive water from its stricken Fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean. 

A live video from a control room at the plant showed a staff member turn on a seawater pump with a click of a mouse, marking the beginning of the controversial project that is expected to last for decades. 

Approved two years ago by the Japanese government and greenlighted by the U.N. nuclear watchdog last month, the discharge has prompted backlash from Japan’s regional neighbors.

Director Shen Ao puts a fast-paced spin on a topical issue to create cinematic success. Within two weeks of its release, No More Bets had leaped ahead of the competition and pulled in more than 2.6 billion yuan (US$355 million) at the box office in China. 

The story follows a computer programmer (Lay Zhang) and a model (Gina Jin) who are tricked into going abroad for good jobs. But things take a bad turn when they are forced into online fraud by a ruthless gang. 

The plot also tells the story of university graduate Tian, played by Wang Dalu, who takes his life after falling prey to online gambling.

In a nine-minute audio file leaked on Chinese social media last night, the female voice, believed to be Coco Lee, had a tirade about how she was "bullied" by the director of variety show Sing! China. 

Coco, who died at the age of 48 on July 5, can be heard speaking angrily and in tears as she said that in the midst of her outburst, the director's two assistants manhandled her. 

Netizens praised Coco for speaking out on set, saying that things must have been “really bad” for the usually chirpy star to flare up like this. Some also commented that they are not surprised by what transpired as the show is known to be “shady”.

No More Bets was released on Wednesday and has earned an eye-popping $275 million already as it outswam “Meg 2” domestically and “Barbie” internationally. 

Maoyan forecasts that No More Bets will finish its run with over $500 million. If achieved, that would put the film fractionally outside the all-time top ten in China.
