Understanding & Overcoming Dissociation and CPTSD After Narcissistic Abuse: Compilation

If you are dealing with someone who has narcissistic personality disorder, chances are that you're experiencing some kind of emotional numbness and personal disconnection from the world. What you might not know is that it's called, dissociation which is “the disconnection or lack of connection between things usually associated with each other,” and that in its most severe forms, those who suffer from it report that the “disconnection occurs in the usually integrated functions of consciousness, memory, identity, or perception.”

So, for example, a person who suffers from dissociation may experience something that most people would be extremely upset and affected by, and they may have no feelings about it.

According to ISST-D, it’s clinically termed “emotional numbing,” and it’s one of the hallmarks of PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), a common and unfortunate side-effect of experiencing narcissistic abuse in a relationship. It’s also a very common complaint seen in people who seek mental health treatment according to a 2002 study published by Maldonado et al).

How does dissociation as a result of gaslighting and mental abuse affect your life? What symptoms are involved?

Though it may initially seem harmless, your ability to “tune out” the world, and though some people may almost find your “spaciness” rather adorable, the truth is that there are plenty of less than desirable consequences that come along with dissociation.

There are five pretty common symptoms of dissociation that can significantly affect your life, and there’s one that is less common but potentially more devastating in some ways.

The official definition of CPTSD is as follows: "Complex post-traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD; also known as complex trauma)[1] is a psychological disorder similar to post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) which results from repetitive, prolonged trauma involving harm or abandonment by a caregiver or other interpersonal relationships with an uneven power dynamic. C-PTSD is associated with child abuse or neglect, intimate partner violence, kidnap victims, hostages, indentured servants, slaves, sweatshop workers, prisoners of war, concentration camp survivors, and defectors of cults or cult-like organizations.[2] Situations involving captivity/entrapment (a situation lacking a viable escape route for the victim or a perception of such) can lead to C-PTSD-like symptoms, which include prolonged feelings of terror, worthlessness, helplessness, and deformation of one's identity and sense of self.["

Overcoming emotional numbness and dissociation after narcissistic abuse with mindfulness meditation and practices

When you're working on healing from trauma bonding with someone with NPD, there are a lot of forces at work against you sometimes - often, your own mind after all of the narcissistic abuse you experienced in a toxic relationship.

You may feel emotionally numb and devastated, and you don't even know how to FEEL anything anymore - the solution to this is mindfulness, and that's what this video covers.

The way that you conduct yourself in your personal and professional life begins with how you use your mind. You can teach your mind to accept yourself and gain empowerment - or you can stay stuck in self-defeating behaviors.

You are what you think. When you want to introduce change into your life, you need to first accept and empower yourself before you begin altering anything. Your mind is the greatest tool that you have for living the best possible life that you can live.

Countless studies have shown that the brain is constantly working. Your brain can be wired to think or cause you to act in a certain way based on how you handle your mind’s ability to tap into your subconscious mind.

When you practice mindfulness, you can empower yourself and fine tune the subconscious abilities that you have. Using mindful strategies, you’ll be able to focus better, lower your stress and boost your confidence and self-esteem.

Once you learn to accept yourself, you’ll be able to have compassion for yourself, too. This will defeat any negative internal talk that you may have been practicing. Meditation is a strategy that you can use to achieve mindfulness in order to accept and empower yourself.

It helps users quiet the mind so that they can be fully in the present and accepting of the emotions and thoughts that they have. Choose a place where you’ll be comfortable so that you’ll be able to feel relaxed.

Some people choose to sit while meditating and others prefer to lie down. You can also practice mindful meditation while you’re walking outside or in your home. Relax and focus on what’s around you and how you’re inhaling and exhaling.

Be aware of the sensations you feel and the emotions that you’re experiencing. Another strategy that’s often used is deep breathing. You can start this the same way that you would with mindful meditation where you find a comfortable place and begin.

But you can also practice deep breathing while you’re active at home or at work. You focus on drawing in deep breaths and slowly releasing them. You can also use mindful replacement techniques.

These are strategies that call for you to be aware of the thoughts that you think about yourself rather than simply letting them pass through your mind. Whenever any negative self talk pops into your mind, you make a conscious choice to stop and correct the thought.

You correct it by replacing it with affirming words that help you accept yourself as you are. This helps you reprogram your thoughts to enable you to feel empowered rather than listening to words that hinder you and create self-doubt.

Ever Wonder Why You Detach From Yourself After Narcissistic Abuse And What to Do About It?

This video was made in response to a request from someone in a recent weekday morning chat, who asked why she felt like she was completely detached from the world, including her Self.

My response? I think she's dealing with a C-PTSD complication called dissociation - two symptoms of which include depersonalization and derealization. This can be accompanied and even partially caused by depression and anxiety.

One of the most commonly reported side-effects of being abused by a narcissist in a relationship of any kind is C-PTSD (Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), and one of the most common ways this can manifest in the victims and survivors of narcissistic abuse and gaslighting manipulation is in the form of dissociation.

Dissociation on a metaphorical level looks a lot like being a passenger in a car rather than the driver. Like, you're seeing all of the turns and the journey, but you're just along for the ride. The ride is happening TO you rather than you choosing the route.

In this video, I'll fill you in on why we detach from ourselves after narcissistic abuse and traumatic experiences, and how we started doing it in the first place. Plus, I'll tell you how dissociating is your brain's way of saving itself during the trauma of physical and psychological abuse. Plus, I'll start explaining how you can begin to deal with it so that you can stop feeling the painful emotional numbness that comes with it and start living your life again.

TBI & NPD - Can they be co-morbid and how are they connected?

This Video Discusses Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) Comorbidity and How They May Be Connected, Pre-and-Post Injury.

What is the difference between a TBI and NPD, and can the two conditions co-exist in the same person?

If you’ve ever dealt with someone who has had a traumatic brain injury or TBI, you may already know that one of the first and most prominently-displayed symptoms tends to be a problem with anger; that is, someone affected by a TBI may display anger more rapidly and intensely than prior to the injury.

They are also more likely to display egocentrism, a marked lack of empathy and various delusions that may seem outrageous and maybe even a serious propensity for blurting out whatever comes to mind, with no apparent concern on how this affects the people around them.

Even more surprising, they can also sometimes target their own caregivers with these delusions and anger, worrying that they are not there to help them, but are actually out to get them. And, they can have extreme anxiety, missing memories and PTSD as a result of the injury. In addition, they can feel quite entitled sometimes. There are also similar issues with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, as I’ll explain in the video.

This video is in response to a request made by one of my subscribers during a recent live morning chat. I am endlessly fascinated by how the brain works, and this has given me new paths to research. But while I’m an expert in NPD, I am not an expert in TBI, so I’m sharing some information with you from someone who IS – and that is Stuart C. Yudofsky, M.D., who is the D.C. and Irene Ellwood Professor and Chair of the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine.

In an article from Psychiatric News (incorrectly noted in the video - reference here: http://psychnews.psychiatryonline.org/doi/10.1176/pn.47.9.psychnews_47_9_27-a), Yudofsky says that it’s common for TBI and personality disorders to be comorbid. He notes that both conditions are very common, and the CDC says that approximately 1.7 people are victims to TBI every year. These injures are responsible for about 52,000 deaths, 275,000 hospitalizations and more than 1.3 million hospital visits each year as well.

How Narcissistic Abuse Affects Your Ability to Communicate and 8 Things You Can Do About It

If you've been abused by someone with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD), you may have experienced so much trauma bonding and gaslighting that you don't even remember how to communicate, right? That's what Kaela said when she asked me this question in a recent morning chat. In addition to the invalidation and straight up being ignored, you realize that you can't always say what you feel and you can't always talk about yourself in a toxic relationship. How do you start again?

Narcissistic Abuse Affects Your Ability to Communicate: When You Forget How to Talk About Yourself

How does narcissistic abuse affect our ability to communicate – with the narcissist and with others in our lives? That’s what we’re talking about today at QueenBeeing.com. One of our fellow survivors named Kaela asked me to make this video during a recent live stream, so here I am.

Communication as we all know is incredibly important in any relationship, but when we’ve been involved with narcissists, even the most skilled communicators can feel helpless and handicapped when it comes to being understood – narcissists will inevitably refuse to understand us, especially when what we’re saying is not something like “OMG, you’re so amazing.�

For example, try telling a narcissist exactly how you feel about the way they belittle and invalidate you – and watch how they twist the conversation around. In some of the most extreme cases, you will end up apologizing for not thinking they’re perfect and for having the nerve to even suggest otherwise.

And, when we go through years of this, not to mention that narcissists often isolate their victims from others who might actually offer some support, we sort of forget HOW to communicate – in a way. We stop feeling like we can (or even should) talk about OURSELVES, and we stop trying to make valuable contributions to conversations, in part because we’ve been conditioned to believe that we have nothing of value to say and nothing to offer.

NPD & Asperger's: Does Narcissistic Personality Disorder Belong on the Autism Spectrum?

What’s the difference between someone with Asperger’s Syndrome and someone with narcissistic personality disorder? Is there one? And could narcissistic personality disorder possibly fit on the autism spectrum?

Someone in a recent morning live coffee chat asked me to define the difference between narcissistic personality disorder and autism spectrum disorder, specifically Asperger’s syndrome. I didn’t feel like I knew enough about it to fully discuss it, so I said what I thought and promised I’d do some research and make a video. So here I am, and here’s that video.

Turns out, there’s been a LOT written on this topic, and it looks like that’s because there’s a commonly misunderstood issue at play here. As you’re probably well-aware, narcissists don’t seem to have much (if any) true empathy for people in their lives; that is, they don’t seem to care how their behavior makes others feel, nor do they seem to understand why people feel the way they do about various situations in their lives – they don’t “feel” people, so to speak, in the same way that you might if you’re an empath.

I'll fill you in on what I found in my research today and on what I think about all of this in this video.

Today I’m sharing a story from a SPAN member who says her husband has been healed of his narcissism by Dr. David Hawkins, who has claimed to know the cure for narcissism. With her permission, I’m printing her letter in full here – but we’ll refer to her husband as Mr. X to protect their identities.

“Hi Angie, just watched your video referencing Dr. Hawkins. My husband Mr. X (name changed) and I have been clients of Dr. Hawkins’ for 18months. Prior to Dr. H, nothing worked. Mr. X could sell ice to Eskimos and fool me, himself, our previous counselor, etc.

Mr. X didn't believe he was abusive or narcissistic; he only acknowledged being self-centered and feeling entitled.

Dr. Hawkins was effective for a few reasons:

Hawkins knew who and what he was dealing with-- he called out every attempt of blame shifting, gaslighting, etc. He easily drilled down and identified Mr. X's triggers.

He taught me how to respond and react in a way that cut off Mr. X from abusing me and he wasn't allowed to interact with me again until he made appropriate amends as approved by Dr. H. If his amends were BS, Dr. H called him out on that too.

Over time he identified Mr. X's abuse cycle and the triggers for each phase of it. He taught Mr. X how to identify his thinking errors along with a process to replace his stinking thinking with healthy thinking.

The abuse cycle used to be short, repeated every few days or weekly, then as Mr. X became a humble participant in his own therapy with Dr. H the abuse cycle occurred maybe once a month. Mr. X's "narcissist mode episodes" happened less and less.

It was hard work, we had to work together daily, per Dr. H we read Lundy Bancroft's book, "Why does he do that?", this taught us both why abuser's abuse, how they think, what needs to occur for them to change, etc. This was one of many helpful assignments from Dr. H.
