WHY and how the narcissist mask slips (The Psychology of Malignant Narcissist Mask Drops) Narcissist False Self: When the Mask Slips - When you first meet a narcissist, you often see only the false self. The narcissist may spend hours talking about themselves, what they have accomplished, their disregard for others, their contempt for those that oppose them, and their plans for the future. At such times they can be extremely entertaining, even charismatic. It is easy to see how they can capture your heart and mind. You see a person who is brimming over with confidence and success. They exchange gifts and favors with you. They do not hesitate in helping people in trouble if it will advance their cause. This is the false self.

What if the mask didn't slip? What if the narcissist was never really wearing a mask in the first place? What if he's been that way all along, even as a child? In this video, I explore the idea of what makes up a 'false self' and why this theory can be so damaging to victims. Why do narcissists lie so much?! If you have ever talked to a narcissist for more than 5 minutes, you have realized that narcissist are liars! They tell lies to manipulate people and get their way. These people can be charming and nice in short interactions (or simply the people walking next to you on the street) but when they want something they will stop at nothing to get it.

There are three main reasons why narcissists lie so much: 1. to cover their tracks 2. to avoid responsibility 3. to serve their own needs. These are all important to keep in mind because, ultimately, we can't expect them to behave any other way (change). Of course, when it comes to asking questions and trying to get the truth out of a narcissist - its a lot harder than it sounds and they're likely to gaslight and manipulate you into continuing to believe their stories. Can narcissists change this?

You have to remember that by the very nature of their personality disorder, narcissists don't have the ability to bare their souls and reveal themselves in all their honesty and imperfection because they are consumed by fear. They are ruled by the fear of not being loved by others. They live by the credo "to be or not to be". Narcissists lie because they want to maintain power over you - another common trait of narcissistic personality disorder.

I discuss the reasons why a narcissist would lie. This is the most overlooked behavior of any narcissist. They love telling people what they want to hear, but they really don't like answering questions! Most people just accept being lied to and move on with life... but shouldn't we hold these people accountable? Narcissists and lies are overwhelmingly complicated. Ever wondered why your narcissistic spouse won't answer questions? If you're dealing with a narcissist, there's one simple reason why he or she won't answer questions: It makes him or her look bad. Narcissists don't want others to see their faults and imperfections, so they'll do whatever they can to deflect attention away from themselves.

Trying to get a narcissist to own up to something is like trying to catch smoke with your bare hands - it's virtually impossible. If you ask a narcissist why he or she did something, you'll most likely get the runaround. This person will avoid answering the question, change the subject and maybe even throw in some gaslighting for good measure.

Narcissists can be especially evasive when it comes to discussing the past. They might tell you that it's in the past and refuse to discuss it further. But this is just a way of dodging the issue, because they know that if they talk about what happened in the past, they might have to admit wrongdoing - and they'll do anything they can to avoid that outcome.
