  • Fix Your Injured Fingers: Lance Douglas the Grip Physio tells us how.

Have you ever hurt your fingers grappling? Knuckles aching from gripping too much? Finger injuries are the worst and if not treated properly can hang around much longer than they should. Lance Douglas is a physiotherapist with a deep grappling history starting in free style Wrestling for 10 years and now a brown belt in BJJ. Lance had encountered his own fair share of finger injuries and felt that not enough was being done to help grapplers treat their sore digits. He founded the Grip Physio and also invented the "Fingertine" a specialty floss band for the fingers to help reduce inflammation for swollen joints.
Lance reveals his go to moves to help strengthen the grips and also what you can do when you do hurt your fingers. If you want to get your hands on the "Fingertine" and want to know more about how to fix your bumpy knuckles click the links below.

  • Belt Lineage in BJJ: Does it even matter?

Who is your coach?  Who was your coach's master? Your Jiu-jitsu family tree has for a long time be held up as an important part of your BJJ identity. The old school view was that sacred knowledge is handed down through the generations and this was an important part of what made an Academy successful.
The internet has democratised BJJ information and with the huge growth in the art and sport, running a good business with great community culture has broken through as the major factor in a gym's success. Whether it be Gracie Jiu-jitsu or Joey Jiu-jitsu this discussion goes deep on why where you come from may not be as important as you think.

  • BJJ Open Mat and Cross Training: How more freedom opens up your Jiu-jitsu

Do you love a good Open Mat session? Ever dropped in at another club for a casual roll? Recently JT went to 2 very different Academies and got amongst it at their open mat sessions. It was by all accounts rekindling of JT's love of the game. But it also raised different questions around the social aspect of BJJ and why meeting a complete stranger and trying to strangle them is good for both parties. If your gym's policies do not allow cross training it is worth asking some questions- Maybe you can be the wind of change that helps expand the learning and contributes to your gym's culture.

Too much will have diminishing returns and can lead to injury, too little and you stagnate or even go backwards.
From mastering a Pull up to perfecting a sweep the right Dosage for you to master that skill is uniquely individual. JT & Joey breakdown their different approaches in the gym and on the mat to find out just how much you need to do to level up.

  • The never ending road to mastery

Ever been cut off in traffic? Ever got a speeding ticket? BJJ is very much like driving a car but there are no speed limits, very few rules and almost no-one has insurance. The difficulty with BJJ is the driver and car are one. If the coach has not outlined the terms and conditions on what the rules are then it's hard to be mad at people going super hard if that is not breaking any rules.
Communication is key to make sure that team mates know what kind of a roll you came for you may not want the Fast and Furious experience. No matter how you like to drive your body must be robust because physical strength and flexibility is your insurance policy.
