ABOUT OUR GUEST:

Jowana Burgan is a mechanical engineer with a passion for building awareness and empowering women in automotive through education and training. She's the founder of Girls Mechanic Team, which is a Toronto-based group of girls and women committed to breaking social norms and helping other women do the same by providing fun, hands-on workshops that go over the basics of car maintenance.

TOPIC:

Jowana joins us on this episode to break down why women are often not taught how to take care of cars, the basics of car maintenance that everyone should know, and how to not get bamboozled at the auto shop.

She explains why there’s such a huge price difference between working with a dealership versus an independent mechanic, and also what red flags to look out for when choosing a maintenance provider. Plus, she gives us a preview of what she covers in her workshops, including how to choose the right motor oil and what equipment you should always have in your car.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Jowana’s introduction to engineering and car maintenance
  • Examples of how Girls Mechanic Team has empowered women in Jowana’s community
  • What each dashboard symbol means
  • Why Jowana recommends that everyone skim the owner's manual of their car
  • The most common car maintenance mistakes and how to avoid them
  • How to find a reliable, trustworthy mechanic
