The Chinese mainland respects and protects Taiwan compatriots' rights to freedom of speech and expression, while leaving no room for ambiguity on fundamental principles, a mainland spokesperson said on Wednesday.
大陆一位发言人周三表示，大陆方面尊重和保护台湾同胞言论自由的权利，但在大是大非原则问题上没有任何模糊空间。

Chen Binhua, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, made the remarks at a regular press conference in response to recent controversy over Taiwan entertainer Tsai Kang-yong, also known as Kevin Tsai, attending the inauguration ceremony of the campaign headquarters of Shen Pao-yang, the Democratic Progressive Party candidate for the Taipei mayoral election.
国务院台湾事务办公室发言人陈斌华在例行新闻发布会上作出上述表态，回应台湾艺人蔡康永出席民进党台北市长参选人沈伯洋竞选总部成立仪式引发的近期争议。

Chen emphasized that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China and that the one-China principle remains the political foundation for cross-Strait relations. He said the actions of Shen, whom the mainland has labeled a diehard "Taiwan independence" separatist, are widely known. "Any form of 'Taiwan independence' separatist activity constitutes a serious violation of the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation, and we firmly oppose all such activities," Chen said.

Tsai, 64, has been active on both sides of the Taiwan Strait as a host and writer in recent years, participating in a number of mainland-based shows. Following his appearance at Shen's campaign event on Oct 4, several mainland companies announced that they would end their cooperation with Tsai and remove related content.

Chen said the mainland respects and protects Taiwan compatriots' legitimate rights to freedom of speech and expression, but stressed that there can be no ambiguity on issues of principle.

"No individual or force can seek to benefit from the mainland's development while at the same time colluding with 'Taiwan independence' separatist forces," Chen said, describing such individuals as "two-faced".

Shen, founder of the Kuma Academy in Taiwan, has promoted separatist ideologies on the island. After being identified by the mainland as a diehard "Taiwan independence" separatist, he was prohibited from entering the mainland, and organizations affiliated with him were restricted from cooperating with the mainland.
沈伯洋是台湾黑熊学院创办人，长期在岛内宣扬分裂思想。大陆将其列为 “台独” 顽固分子后，禁止其入境大陆，其关联机构也被限制同大陆开展合作。

A recent investigation found that Shen's father, Shen Tucheng, continued trade and business cooperation with relevant mainland enterprises under the name of a new company, VWAY, after his original company was sanctioned in June last year. Chen accused Shen of repeatedly advocating "anti-China" positions while obstructing cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation, while at the same time working with relatives to seek profits from the mainland, calling such actions "disgraceful".

"The mainland will not allow enterprises associated with diehard 'Taiwan independence' separatists to seek profits on the mainland," Chen said, adding that the mainland has decided to impose sanctions on VWAY and take necessary measures, including prohibiting the company from conducting any transactions or cooperation with mainland organizations, enterprises, and individuals.

President Xi Jinping has called for efforts to firmly follow a path with Chinese characteristics in developing the country's health programs, to secure decisive progress in the Healthy China Initiative over the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-30).


Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks at a national meeting on health held in Beijing on Monday and Tuesday.


Xi stressed that people's health is a key benchmark of a nation's prosperity and strength.


Since the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012, the Party has made a major decision to launch the Healthy China Initiative, promoting the establishment of the world's largest systems of medical services, traditional medicine, disease prevention and control, and healthcare security, said Xi, noting that the country has achieved historic accomplishments and made all-round progress in healthcare.


He said the goal is to build a Healthy China, where health services are ensured in a balanced, inclusive, high-quality and efficient manner.


Xi stressed that people's health should be factored into all policies and reflected in every aspect of work.


Prevention, he said, is the most cost-effective and efficient approach to protecting public health. He called for greater emphasis on foundational health work, addressing risks at their source, and encouraging the public to adopt a sound understanding of health and take an active role in managing their own well-being.


He also called for a stronger disease prevention and control system to guard against large-scale outbreaks.


Xi underscored the need to optimize the functions and structural layout of medical institutions so that people can access medical care close to home and receive effective treatment.


He also urged efforts to improve mechanisms for the preservation and innovative development of traditional Chinese medicine, strengthen basic research and original innovation in the health sector, and enhance the patient experience.


Xi stressed that coordinating the development and regulation of medical services, medical insurance, and pharmaceuticals should be a key priority in reforming China's medical and healthcare systems.


He also called for efforts to train and develop a sufficient number of highly qualified medical professionals.


Efforts will also be made to actively promote the building of a global community of health for all, work with other countries to address major challenges in the health sector, and continuously improve the health and well-being of people around the world, he said.

Business and industry representatives in the United States have welcomed the tariff reduction proposal on a total of $60 billion worth of goods put forward by the US-China Board of Trade in September, as the levies have caused uncertainty ahead of the holiday season.

China will continue to prioritize employment promotion during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-30), building on progress made in stabilizing the job market, officials said on Saturday.

For centuries, mathematicians have occupied the penthouse of human intelligence. Their discipline was the ultimate sanctuary of reason, where brilliance was measured not by eloquence but by irrefutable logic. On Oct 6 OpenAI delivered an unsettling message to its occupants: the machines are moving in, showing the potential and ambition to own the building.


The company unveiled full or partial solutions to 372 outstanding problems in mathematics and theoretical computer science, generating more than 700 documents. Its claims included progress on the Kakeya conjecture, important algorithms and even the formidable Riemann hypothesis. Artificial intelligence seems to be quietly trespassing on intellectual territory reserved for Fields medalists.


The reaction was a mix of astonishment, bewilderment and indignation. Timothy Gowers, a Fields medalist from the United Kingdom, likened the approaching transformation to a tsunami visible from the beach. Terence Tao, another mathematical luminary of the United States, warned of "proof indigestion", where machines produce mathematical arguments faster than humans can verify, understand or absorb them.


The Association for Human Mathematics was less restrained. In a statement criticizing OpenAI's mass release, it declared: "Releasing over 700 files at once is not a demonstration of scholarship, but a demonstration of power." It urged mathematicians to stop collaborating with the company and defend research centered on human understanding.


Mathematics is not merely an industrial process for manufacturing correct answers. Its purpose is to illuminate why something is true, discover connections and develop ideas that others can understand. An opaque, hundred-page machine-generated proof may establish a result without advancing human comprehension. Worse, asking academics to scrutinize hundreds of such manuscripts transfers the costs of corporate competition to the scientific community.


OpenAI's reluctance to disclose its model, prompts and complete computational procedures compounds the problem. Some results remain unverified; others have reportedly required correction. Mathematical certainty cannot be established by a corporate press release.


Yet mathematicians should avoid mistaking today's limitations for permanent barriers. AI systems are improving at a pace that makes predicting their intellectual limits increasingly hazardous. What began as sophisticated pattern recognition has developed into sustained mathematical reasoning, parallel experimentation and increasingly autonomous problem-solving. Errors can be corrected, verification can be automated and even the ability to identify fruitful questions, still largely a human preserve, may not remain so.


This makes OpenAI's announcement more consequential than a mere technological publicity stunt. After writers, artists, translators and social scientists, mathematicians must confront a question once considered beneath their professional dignity: What happens when a machine becomes better at the very activity that defines your intellectual worth?


The implications extend far beyond academic careers. Mathematics underpins cryptography, financial markets, weapons systems, AI itself and much of modern science. An AI capable of discovering mathematical truths beyond human understanding could dramatically accelerate technological progress. It could also generate capabilities whose consequences are understood only after their deployment.


That possibility becomes especially troubling given recent controversies surrounding the safety and behavior of advanced AI systems developed by US technology companies. Companies racing to demonstrate ever-greater intelligence have powerful commercial incentives to advance capabilities faster than safeguards. Mathematical brilliance is no guarantee of prudence.


Nor does superior mathematical reasoning establish machine consciousness. Self-awareness remains a speculative possibility, not a demonstrated achievement. But an autonomous system need not become conscious to behave unpredictably, pursue defined objectives or gain influence beyond effective human control.


Humanity has created an extraordinary instrument for extending its intelligence. It may also have created a rival to that intelligence. The distinction matters less if people gradually lose the ability to understand, evaluate or restrain what their machines produce.


The mathematicians' dilemma is thus a microcosm of humanity's predicament. They are discovering that the highest achievements of human reasoning may no longer belong exclusively to humans. Whether this heralds an intellectual renaissance or an unprecedented surrender of control depends on decisions being made now.


The tsunami is still offshore. The danger is that its architects are too busy measuring the wave's height to notice how little time remains to prepare.
