As China will soon enter one of its busiest travel periods during an ultra-long Golden Week holiday, destinations in Asia are gearing up to attract more tourists from the region's top outbound travel market.

"The extended Golden Week is particularly significant for Asian destinations because the potential for a long travel period creates greater opportunities for short-haul and multi-destination travel within Asia," said Noor Ahmad Hamid, CEO of the Pacific Asia Travel Association.

Many Chinese workers have chosen to extend the break to 13 days by taking leave during the three days between the two holidays.

According to a report released on Sept 21 by Chinese online travel platform Trip.com, more than half of the outbound flight bookings made by Chinese travelers are for departures before the Golden Week officially begins on Oct 1.

Apart from traditional popular destinations in East Asia and Southeast Asia, long-haul destinations in Australia and New Zealand have also gained traction, according to the report.

Destinations are preparing in different ways. For example, on Sept 14, Thailand unveiled the "Nihao Month 2026" campaign to deepen the country's engagement with the Chinese market, while a "Seoul Welcome Week: Autumn Edition" is being held in South Korea through Oct 11 to welcome international tourists, including those from China.

The potential surge in outbound tourism during the ultra-long holiday is particularly important for Asian destinations this year as the tourism industry has experienced difficulties due to the Middle East conflict and rising oil prices, Gary Bowerman, managing director of the weekly industry newsletter Asia Travel Re: Set, told China Daily.

Xi's visit offers another opportunity to build on this momentum. According to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun, Xi will have an in-depth exchange of views with Trump on major issues concerning China-US relations as well as world peace and development. Emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, make this need particularly urgent. As two major players in AI, China and the US have a responsibility to discuss how it can be developed and used safely and responsibly.


The China-US economic and trade consultations in New York offer a concrete illustration of what dialogue can achieve. Previous consultations have already proved that generally balanced and positive outcomes can be produced. The lesson is that differences can be managed when both sides choose dialogue over assumptions, consultation over escalation and mutually beneficial outcomes over zero-sum calculations.


People-to-people exchanges are equally important. Xi's visit to the US comes during the Mid-Autumn Festival, a traditional Chinese occasion associated with reunion. The timing gives the visit an additional human dimension. Relations between major countries ultimately rest on relations between their peoples, especially the youth.


Economic cooperation is the ballast for bilateral relations. China's 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30) is not only a development blueprint but also a potential cooperation list. The reply came as China's Foreign Ministry confirmed on Monday that Xi will make his first state visit to the US in 11 years.


During the visit, President Xi and US President Donald Trump will hold in-depth discussions on major issues concerning China-US relations and world peace and development, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said at a regular news briefing.


Head-of-state diplomacy plays an irreplaceable role in providing strategic guidance for bilateral relations, Guo said, adding that reciprocal visits by the two presidents within six months represent a historic milestone.


China is ready to work with the US to give greater substance to a constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability, strengthen dialogue and cooperation, and properly manage differences to benefit both peoples and promote world peace, stability and prosperity, he added.


The visit follows Trump's state visit to China in May, when Xi and Trump agreed on a new vision of building a constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability, providing strategic guidance for bilateral ties over the next three years and beyond.


Since Trump took office in January 2025, the two leaders have held two face-to-face meetings and five phone calls, and have written many letters to each other.


Sun Chenghao, an associate research fellow at Tsinghua University's Center for International Security and Strategy, said that tariff reductions and an extension of the trade truce were key areas to watch. Putting earlier trade understandings into practice could help consolidate stability in bilateral economic ties, he added.


Closer engagement could also help China and the US address challenges facing the wider world, said Zhu Feng, dean of Nanjing University's School of International Studies, highlighting their shared responsibility to support global peace, stability and development.


Zhu said a more stable China-US relationship could bolster confidence in the global economy. He also stressed the importance of dialogue on regional conflicts and other international challenges, in order to help manage tensions and reduce the risk of miscalculation.


Both sides need to show mutual understanding and respect on issues involving core interests and sensitive concerns, Zhu said, stressing that managing differences does not mean avoiding them.


People-to-people exchanges are another important part of the relationship. Xi has emphasized on a number of occasions that the hope of China-US relations lies in the people and that the future depends on young people.


In San Francisco in November 2023, he announced an initiative to invite 50,000 young Americans to China for exchange and study programs over five years. The target has been met two-and-a-half years ahead of schedule.


Moritz Kuhlmann, an affiliated researcher at the Asia Society Policy Institute's Center for China Analysis, hailed the initiative as a way to deepen mutual understanding. "We start with small steps, very narrow, very concrete," he said, "and that can evolve into something bigger."

The fifth plenary session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China will be held from Oct 26 to 29 in Beijing, according to a decision made on Monday at a meeting of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.


Xi Jinping, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, presided over the meeting, which studied major issues on strengthening full and rigorous Party self-governance with perseverance.

For example, the draft prohibits the provision of services for launching livestreaming rooms to individuals under 16.

"This means people in this age group are not allowed to be streamers, start their own broadcasts or transmit audio or video content to the public in real time," Zheng said.

Zheng and Liu both praised the draft for explicitly prohibiting the provision of services such as virtual companions and virtual relatives to minors.

"Virtual intimacy can easily lead children to form emotional attachments, blur the boundaries between virtual and real-life interpersonal relationships, interfere with their real-life social interactions and value recognition and potentially induce internet addiction and irrational spending," Zheng said.
