COVID-19 restrictions mean dining at restaurants has become a distant memory for some cities in China. Diners are eager to buy ready-to-cook, ready-to-heat or ready-to-eat meals that taste similar to those served at restaurants. Given the convenience of such meals that require minimum preparation, a niche has developed for ready meal retailers, market insiders said.

Major ready meal makers have witnessed a surge in sales, and big e-commerce grocery platforms such as Freshippo, Missfresh, Meituan Maicai and Dingdong Maicai have increased their investments in the sector. During the May Day holiday in early May, sales of ready meals on those platforms surged 100 percent to 500 percent year-on-year.

On May 13, according to the 2022 ready meals consumption trend report released by JD consumption and Industrial Development Research Institute in conjunction with JD supermarket, consumers' demand for "efficient kitchens" and the impact of the epidemic have significantly increased the consumption demand for "ready meals". In 2021, the turnover of ready meals increased by 156% year-on-year.

Meanwhile, an increasing number of people who live alone have fueled the market that targets single diners. China has 494.16 million households, of which more than 125 million people who live alone, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics released last year.

In 2021, the supply volume of food in individual servings online more than doubled the volume available in 2020. Last year, sales of light meals, rice-flour noodles, high-end noodles, and self-heating meal options were quite popular, and sales of those categories grew about 60 percent to 80 percent year-on-year, according to online retailer JD.

Instant spaghetti in tomato meat sauce, black pepper and cream flavors has become a hit among young Chinese consumers, especially among single diners.

Besides, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region-inspired luosifen, or pungent rice noodles containing pickled bamboo shoots and river snails, saw its sales surge last year by more than 50 percent year-on-year, JD found.

There is no need to cut or wash dishes, and there is no need to worry about poor cookingskills. Simply processing or heating them, and a home-made dish can be served. The simplest home food can also be full of ritual.

The college entrance examinations (gaokao) will be held on Tuesday to Friday amid an upsurge in COVID-19 infections in some places. Will the sporadic outbreaks in infections affect gaokao candidates’ performance? Two experts share their views with China Daily’s Yao Yuxin on how students and their families can overcome the challenges, and candidates can get good scores in gaokao.

Given that gaokao will be held amid sporadic outbreaks, the most important thing is to safeguard the rights of every candidate to take the exams. In other words, despite testing positive for the novel coronavirus, they should not be denied entry to a test center for reasons such as nucleic acid testing results.

Fortunately, the problem has been addressed as separate rooms have been arranged for students who test positive for the novel coronavirus or are suspected to have contracted the virus.

The pandemic prevention and control measures do create some inconveniences, so students should leave for the test centers well in advance to avoid delay. Apart from that, candidates do not need to worry too much about the anti-pandemic measures, and instead should seriously prepare for the exams.

In fact, the pandemic can give the students who are good at self-regulation or can study on their own an edge over others in gaokao. The restrictions on people’s movement, which have forced many examinees to study intermittently at home, have created much more time for self-study and reduced the cram sessions at school. On the other hand, students who get high scores by memorizing answers will be at a slight disadvantage.

This can make gaokao more equitable, and students who are truly talented and passionate about studies, rather than those who get high scores through rote learning, will perform better.

So instead of worrying too much, self-motivated and self-regulated students should be more confident about performing well in gaokao.

Gaokao candidates need not worry about the pandemic and COVID-19 protocols. Education authorities around the country are well-prepared to ensure gaokao is held in a safe and methodical way and all candidates can take the exams.

The number of students that have signed up for gaokao this year is about 11.93 million, an increase of 1.15 million year-on-year. However, given the authorities’ more than two years’ experience of holding the exams amid the pandemic, the increase in the number of candidates should not raise safety fears.

Aside from Shanghai that has postponed gaokao for one month, the rest of the country will hold the exams on schedule.

To rule out the possibility of infections and ensure the students’ safety, examinees were required to have their body temperature measured and their health condition monitored for 14 consecutive days ahead of the exam. And separate rooms have been earmarked for students who have come in close contact with an infected person or have contracted the novel coronavirus.

Students should strictly follow the pandemic prevention and control measures, and focus on preparing for the exams. Since gaokao is a competitive test for candidates within one provincial-level region, the impact of the pandemic on all will be the same.

Therefore, the students should adapt to the changes, and consider gaokao as another test of their resilience and academic knowledge, which will stand them in good stead even beyond the exams.

Candidates should study hard for gaokao, and take the exams in a relaxed and confident manner. In fact, they should use gaokao as a test to show their knowledge and aptitude which they have accumulated over 12 years of schooling.

The successful launch of the Shenzhou XIV spaceship from Jiuquan, Gansu province, on Sunday morning, and its successful docking with Tianhe core module of the Tiangong space station about seven hours later, mark the beginning of China's third crewed mission to its space station.

During their six-month stay in Tianhe, the three astronauts — Chen Dong, Liu Yang and Cai Xuzhe — will help with the docking, setting up and testing of two lab modules, Wentian and Mengtian, that are due to be launched in July and October.

The transformation of the space station from the current single-module structure into a three-module space laboratory will provide a larger-scale platform for scientific experiments in microgravity.

Another three astronauts are due to be sent to the space station at the end of the current mission to work and live with the crew for five to 10 days, which will be the first crew rotation in space and bring the number of astronauts in space to a record six at the same time.

The Tiangong space station is scheduled to be fully crewed by the end of next year and operational for about 15 years from then on.

After the space station's operations are normalized, large-scale scientific research projects are planned with the aim of not only furthering understanding of the universe but also helping to promote sustainable development on Earth.

Despite being a latecomer to space, with the huge input of the country and productive international cooperation, China has proved to be not only a keen learner but also a brave explorer and a true innovator in its space endeavors — it successfully landed the first exploratory rover on the far side of the moon in 2020 — and its space ambitions span far into the future with grand plans for space exploration, research and commercialization.

That the country has been making one achievement after another with its space missions reflects the rapid development of its aerospace sector thanks to its institutional strengths. Adopting a results-oriented model, hundreds of institutes, universities, labs and companies are involved in China's space cause. Their achievements in advancing China's space cause also produce tangible benefits for the whole nation in the form of transferrable research results.

Xi:President calls for action to protect nature

President Xi Jinping has called for the whole of society to engage in action to promote and practice the philosophy of ecological civilization, as China endeavors to achieve a comprehensive green transition toward a clean and beautiful world.

The natural environment provides the very foundation for human survival and development, and having a sound natural environment is the common wish of people of all countries, Xi said in a congratulatory letter to a national celebration event on Sunday marking World Environment Day.

Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in 2012, China has emphasized that the strategy of building an ecological civilization is vitally important to the sustainable development of the Chinese nation, said Xi, who is also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee.

The country has made concrete steps toward building a beautiful China, he said, adding that "historical, transformative and comprehensive" changes have been achieved.

With the intensified endeavor to promote a comprehensive green transition of economic and social development, China will devote more efforts to pollution control, ecological conservation and tackling of climate change to build a beautiful China and to help build a clean and beautiful world, Xi said.

World Environment Day, observed each year on June 5, was also designated a national environment day for China in 2014 when the National People's Congress, the country's top legislature, adopted an amendment to the Environmental Protection Law.

This year, on the theme of "Building together a clean and beautiful world", the celebratory event was held on Sunday in Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning province.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Vice-Premier Han Zheng called for upholding the concept of "a community of life for man and nature" and promoting public awareness so that all Chinese citizens take action to build a beautiful China.

He said continued efforts should be made to address acute environmental problems at people's doorsteps, and the security of energy, grain supply, the industrial supply chain and people's normal lives must be ensured when the country endeavors to cut its carbon emissions.

Canada should introduce a total ban on the buying and selling of all handguns, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said.

His government is proposing a new law that would freeze private ownership of all short-barrelled firearms.

The legislation would not ban the ownership of handguns outright - but would make it illegal to buy them.

Mr Trudeau's proposal comes days after a deadly shooting at a Texas primary school, in the neighbouring US, killed 21 people.

The bill, which was presented to Canada's parliament on Monday, makes it impossible to buy, sell, transfer or import handguns anywhere in the country.

"Other than using firearms for sport shooting and hunting, there is no reason anyone in Canada should need guns in their everyday lives," Mr Trudeau told reporters.

"As we see gun violence continue to rise, it is our duty to keep taking action," he said.

It marks the most ambitious attempt yet by his government to restrict access to firearms.

The bill would also require rifle magazines to be reconfigured so they can hold no more than five rounds at a time.

And it would take away firearms licences from gun owners involved in domestic violence or criminal harassment.

Unlike in the US, gun ownership is not enshrined in Canada's constitution, but firearms are still popular, especially in rural parts of the country.

Canada already has stricter rules on gun ownership than its southern neighbour and records fewer firearm incidents every year.

For example, all guns must be kept locked and unloaded and anyone wishing to buy a firearm must undergo extensive background checks.

But there have been calls in recent years to tighten gun legislation there even further, especially following a number of deadly shootings.

In April 2020, a gunman posing as a police officer killed 22 people during a shooting spree in Nova Scotia - the deadliest in Canada's history.

Within days, Mr Trudeau announced an immediate ban on 1,500 different kinds of military-grade and assault-style weapons.

The new bill would effectively limit the number of legally-owned handguns in Canada to present levels.

Veterinarian Yu Zhe, who has lived alone at Shanghai PAW Veterinary Hospital for two months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was finally able to return home at midnight on Tuesday, when the city's lockdown was officially lifted.

Since April 1, Yu had been in sole charge of nearly 20 pets at the facility, providing assistance to animal owners living in the area.

However, returning home does not mean that she will be taking a break.

"When I announced in the WeChat group with pet owners that our hospital would resume normal operations on Wednesday, the group suddenly became extremely active," said Yu, deputy director of the Shanghai Pet Industry Association.

"Vet appointments for Wednesday and Thursday were booked up quickly. We are expecting about 20 pets to arrive at the hospital every day, and we are now arranging appointments for Friday and the weekend."

To deal with the surge in appointments, Yu arranged for three additional staff members to work on Wednesday. She said that with more vets returning to work, the number of pet owners seeking help last month fell significantly compared with April.

Yu is just one of more than 22 million Shanghai residents in low-risk communities who can now leave their compounds and neighborhoods without limited time passes or area restrictions after the city government lifted most epidemic control measures and allowed many businesses to resume operations.

The streets of Shanghai were bustling again on Wednesday, with residents eager to get out and about. From early morning onward, many people were seen at landmark sites, including the Bund and the riverside in Pudong New Area.

Figures from the bike-sharing app Meituan showed that cycle trips rose by 535 percent during the morning rush hour on Wednesday, compared with the same time last week.

In a letter of thanks to Shanghai residents, the city's Party committee and the municipal government said, "After all these unforgettable days, when the metropolis was paused unprecedentedly, Shanghai has achieved major milestones in the fight against the spread of the novel coronavirus."

The letter stated that the major task now is economic recovery and consolidating hard-won epidemic control results.

"With the city's characteristics of openness, innovation and inclusiveness, Shanghai will strive to build a stronger, safer and more attractive environment for individuals and business development, and give people more reasons to have trust, remain in the city, and to love Shanghai," the letter added.

On Tuesday, Shanghai registered 15 new COVID-19 infections, all detected in quarantined populations. The number of daily infections in the city has fallen to double digits for three consecutive days.

Before midnight on Tuesday, all tunnels and bridges linking both sides of the Huangpu River reopened. Police also removed barriers isolating districts.

The ringing of the Custom House bell on the Bund at midnight on Tuesday was accompanied by drivers sounding their horns to herald life in the city returning to normal.

Public transportation services, including buses, metro lines and ferries, resumed full operations. Shanghai's metro authority said that by 11 am on Wednesday, 913,000 passenger trips had been made on the city's subway network.

Cars from low-risk areas of the city can also hit the road again. Police said traffic was generally stable and flowing smoothly during the morning rush hour. The number of vehicles on the roads was about 60 percent of the average figure before the current outbreak emerged.

Chen Dong, deputy traffic police chief in the downtown district of Jing'an, said, "As many drivers needed to buy fuel, we deployed more officers at gasoline stations in the area to avoid congestion."

Taxis and other ride-hailing services also resumed operations.

"I felt quite excited to finally hit the road again," said Zhang, who for the past two months stayed in an apartment in Baoshan district with three fellow drivers. For the first month, they relied on instant noodles, as they did not have any cooking utensils.

Gu Xinyun, who works for SAIC Volkswagen, said the company called on its employees to help neighbors jump-start their vehicles, as the batteries may have become flat after two months.

He said more than 10 neighbors asked him for help in a week. While most of their problems were solved, some cars had serious power loss, with the batteries needing to be replaced.

"I'll help neighbors jump-start their vehicles and they can then drive them to the maintenance shop," Gu said.

After putting up the shutters for two months, the Green Bazaar restaurant, which sells light meals at the Bund Finance Center, is ready to welcome more customers.

Wang Ningning, the eatery's manager, said most employees who returned to work were excited. "We've been waiting for so long," she added.

"On Wednesday, the number of customers coming to the restaurant to collect takeout orders was about half that recorded for an average day before the pandemic. Online sales orders exceeded our capacity, so we had to suspend taking them for a time. We're all confident that the market can recover."

Zhao Dan, CEO of the BFC shopping mall, said 200 of its stores, or 96 percent, resumed business on Wednesday, including supermarkets, catering and clothing outlets.

In addition, more than 2,000 employees at 110 enterprises, or 90 percent of the total number based in the mall's office buildings, have resumed work, Zhao said.

Wang Yu, who lives in Huangpu district, visited the mall with his daughter, who is a kindergarten pupil, to celebrate the city returning to normal.

"People are very friendly to each other on the streets today," Wang said.

Shanghai's victory over its worst outbreak of COVID-19 in two years was a result of joint efforts by residents. After the citywide lockdown was imposed on April 1, daily infection numbers peaked at 27,719 on April 13.

The daily total gradually fell last month, and the city finally achieved zero transmission in all 16 districts on May 17, except for quarantined and locked down populations.

This success came after numerous rounds of nucleic acid and antigen tests, with residents required to self-isolate at home, and most infected patients being treated at makeshift hospitals.

On Tuesday, the largest makeshift hospital, which provided 50,000 beds and was renovated from the National Exhibition and Convention Center, was closed.

Three makeshift hospitals providing a total of 20,000 beds have been retained in Shanghai to meet future epidemic prevention and control requirements. At the peak of the outbreak, there were 120 makeshift hospitals in the city, providing more than 300,000 beds.

Yin Xin, spokeswoman for the Shanghai government, said, "Our city is ushering in a brand-new start, which we have long looked forward to and dedicated a lot to achieve."

Dragon Boat Festival food inventory, which one do you like best?

The Dragon Boat Festival is one of the favorite festivals for foodies. During the Dragon Boat Festival, you can eat all kinds of delicious snacks, and these snacks have a lot of talk, let's take a look!

    Zongzi

In Guangdong province, the dumplings are filled with five-spice coated fatty pork and plenty of mung beans cooked inside the rice. Often, traditional cooks also add a whole salted egg yolk. In Beijing and other northern provinces, the preference is for sweet dumplings, filled with sugary red-bean paste.

    Realgar Wine

There is an old saying: 'Drinking realgar wine drives diseases and evils away!' Realgar wine, or xionghuangjiu, is a Chinese alcoholic drink consisting of fermented cereals and powdered realgar.

    Eggs Steamed with Tea

It is a custom for people in Central China's Nanchang region to eat eggs boiled with tea at Dragon Boat Festival. The shells of the boiled eggs are then dyed red, put into colorful net bags, and hung round children's necks, which is believed to bring them good luck.

    Eggs with Garlic

In the rural areas in Central China's Henan province and East China's Zhejiang province, people eat eggs with garlic on Dragon Boat Festival. Eggs are steamed with garlic and then shared with families as breakfast. Eating eggs with garlic is believed to promote health.

    Dagao - Glutinous Rice Cake

Glutinous rice cakes are eaten by the Korean ethnic group, who live in Yanbian prefecture in Northeast China's Jilin province. Served with honey or sugar, it tastes delicious and chewy.

    Eel

The custom of eating eel on Dragon Boat Festival day prevails in central China's Wuhan region. Eels are probably eaten simply because they are in season during the festival, fatty and tender, and rich in nutrition.

    Jiandui - Fried Cake

Jiandui is a kind of fried round cake made of wheat and rice flour and something to sweeten them. In East China's Fujian province, every family eats jiandui on Dragon Boat Festival. A legend explains this custom. It is said that the area enters its rainy season during Dragon Boat Festival. People believed there were holes in the sky which, if not filled, would allow the rain to continue indefinitely. Eating jiandui is said to help mend the sky and fill the holes.

    Pancake

In East China's Wenzhou area, every family eats a kind of thin pancake at Dragon Boat Festival. Green bean sprouts, leek, shredded meat, and mushrooms are then placed on the pancake, which is then rolled up and eaten as a wrap.

    Salted Duck Eggs

Tradition has it that it is good to eat salted duck eggs during the Dragon Boat Festival as the burning summer is coming. The salted duck eggs are nutrient-rich and have some effect on the treatment of heat stroke.

    Mianshanzi

Mianshanzi is a kind of wheat flour food made in a fan shape. The custom of eating mianshanzi on the Dragon Boat Festival mainly prevails in Minqin county in Northwest China's Gansu province. This fan-shaped food is made up of five multi-colored layers, with each layer covered with fried sprinkles of pepper powder. The layers are pinched into a variety of patterns to make it appealing to eyes. This dietary custom is said to be trace back to the tradition of making and selling fans during Duanwu Festival in ancient times.

What other traditional dishes of the dragon boat festival do you have in your hometown? Please tell us in the comments section!

Thanks for watching~ Have a nice day!

There are many reasons why it is difficult to have a good rest when you have a cold and fever. It's hard to get a good night's sleep when you have a stuffy nose, a persistent cough, or other intolerable symptoms. When you have a fever, it is more difficult to ensure high-quality sleep. Another reason is that you often have strange dreams when you have a fever. So why does a fever cause strange nightmares? Scientists have some speculation about this.

Getting a solid night’s rest when you’re sick can seem like an unattainable goal for any number of reasons. It’s difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep when you’re plagued by a stuffy nose, a ceaseless cough, or some combination of those and other intolerable symptoms.

Fevers can make quality sleep even harder, thanks in part to fever dreams: especially vivid, weird, or downright disturbing dreams that occur when you have a fever. As the Sleep Foundation explains, fever dreams sometimes involve “spatial distortion,” such as moving walls and melting objects; “threats or danger,” which can be anything from insects to terrorists; and illness. If you were to have a dream fitting this description when you weren’t sick, you might just write it off as a garden-variety nightmare. But since people seem to experience such strange dreams more often during fevers, it’s given rise to the idea that the two things must be linked.

While there’s a lot about fever dreams we don’t know, there is at least a little evidence supporting the theory that some people’s fever dreams are different from their regular dreams. In one retrospective study from 2016, researchers asked 62 people to describe past fever dreams and found them to be “more bizarre, more emotionally intense, and often negatively toned than [regular] dream[s] from an age- and gender matched sample.”Of the 164 people who participated in a 2020 survey, 100 reported fever dreams. The researchers noted that these dreams “included more references to health and temperature perception compared to ‘normal’ most recent dreams.”

As for why fevers beget bizarre nightmares, scientists have some ideas.“[One] theory is that the brain doesn’t process sensations normally when we have a fever,” Dr. Beth Malow, director of Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s sleep division, told Health in 2020. So burning up in your bed might just manifest itself in a dream full of melting objects and seemingly unrelated perils.

The reason fever dreams seem so vivid could be related to fever’s tendency to interfere with REM sleep: the period of deepest sleep during which most dreams occur. As Dr. Alcibiades Rodriguez, medical director of NYU Langone Health’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Center-Sleep Center, told Health, “If we get a spike in fever during REM sleep, we may feel more uncomfortable and have micro-arousals (shifts between deep and light sleep). This increases the likelihood of us remembering our dreams.”

Xi coveys full support to John Lee

President Xi Jinping stressed on Monday the decisive role of the new electoral system of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in enabling various sectors to jointly contribute to the growth of the city, saying that the system must be treasured and upheld over the longer term.

Xi conveyed Beijing's full recognition and support to John Lee, the newly appointed chief executive of the Hong Kong SAR, during a meeting at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing.

Lee, the former chief secretary for administration of the Hong Kong SAR government, scored a sweeping win in the election on May 8 and is set to take office on July 1, after being formally appointed by the State Council this month.

The president said the new electoral system has played a decisive role in ensuring that patriots administer Hong Kong and guaranteeing that Hong Kong residents can exercise their rights to run the city.

He noted that elections held under the new electoral system, including the election of the Election Committee, the Legislative Council and the chief executive, have all proved successful, adding that the system is a political system and a system of democracy that is in keeping with the "one country, two systems" principle, the reality of Hong Kong and its needs for development.

Xi also spoke highly of Lee, commending him for his unwavering patriotism, love for Hong Kong, and for assuming his duties in different posts to contribute to national security and the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong.

As Hong Kong is set to mark the 25th anniversary of its return to the motherland in July, Xi said the practice of "one country, two systems", despite the challenges it faced, has been a universally recognized success.

He underscored that the central government's commitment to comprehensively and faithfully implementing "one country, two systems" has never wavered, and will remain unwavering.

Xi said that Hong Kong has already completed a major turnaround from chaos to stability and is now in a critical period in transitioning from stability to prosperity.

Xi added that he believes the new SAR government will demonstrate new vitality in its governance and the region will write a new chapter in its growth.

Hong Kong's economy contracted by 4 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of the year, as the SAR was hit hard by a fifth wave of COVID-19, which also resulted in cross-boundary transport disruption.

Premier Li Keqiang, who granted Lee a certificate of appointment at a meeting on Monday, said the central government will extend full support to the chief executive and the new SAR government in exercising law-based governance, developing the economy and improving the public's well-being.

He highlighted the need to amplify the strengths of the region and enable the city to better integrate itself into national development, and to maintain its long-term prosperity and stability.
