The mascot for the Beijing Winter Olympics, Bing Dwen Dwen, has enjoyed an increasing rise in popularity. It seems to have taken the gold for the most favored prop for athlete snapshots. Such has been the surge in popularity that products with its image are difficult to get in the Winter Olympic Village. The question "do you have Bing Dwen Dwen?" is now a form of greeting. Some say the mascot has become the best ambassador for the Beijing Winter Olympics.

The popularity stems mainly from its naive and cute appearance. Its shape combines the image of a panda with an ice crystal shell, inspired by the "ice ribbon" of the National Speed Skating Oval. The flowing color lines symbolize the ice and snow sports track. The design, full of modernity and technology, conveys the charm of China and expresses the beauty of the Olympic Games.

“冰墩墩”吸引人之处，主要来自它憨态可掬的模样。其造型将熊猫形象与冰晶外壳相结合，灵感源自国家速滑馆“冰丝带”。流动的色彩线条象征着冰雪运动赛道。充满现代感和科技范儿的设计，传递着中国神韵，也表达着奥运之美。

There have been continual demands to increase supply and end the shortage. A toy manufacturing company, located in Qidong, Nantong, Jiangsu province, is one of the three companies in China that participate in designing and manufacturing the mascot. Currently, the company is stepping up its production to meet market demand.

连日来，催补货的呼声居高不下。江苏省南通启东的一家玩具制造公司，作为全国三家参与了冬奥会吉祥物设计制造的企业之一，正在抓紧加单赶制，满足市场需求。

In the production workshop, the semifinished Bing Dwen Dwens pile upon the processing tabletop. Workers put on a transparent "coat", install it on a fixed base, and wrap it in a special packaging box. A cute Bing Dwen Dwen is then transported to the designated store.

在生产车间，“墩”量十足的“冰墩墩”半成品铺满了加工桌面。工人们会给“冰墩墩”套上透明“外衣”，安上固定底座，装入特制包装盒。这样，一只只可爱的“冰墩墩”就可以整装待发，被运往指定专卖店了。

A worker, surnamed Shen, who has been with the company for more than 10 years, is responsible for installing the base for Bing Dwen Dwen. In order to ensure that the doll does not fall, and looks elfish, she must test it. Shen, with a smile on her face, says packaging Bing Dwen Dwen is comforting. In fact, the seemingly simple packaging process shows the workers' devotion to delivering happiness.

"After all, we treat it with lots of care, just like our own children," says Wang Danfeng, technical director of the company's development department. She is excited about the mascot's overnight fame. Wang and her team have their own best practices and insider secrets to make it pop out of the design phase and become a lively plush toy. They have done extensive research and design on the size of the eyes, the color or the detailed expressions, the selection of fabrics, the curvature of the overall shape and the proportion of visual comfort.

"Cutting, sewing, embroidering, stuffing cotton, binding... each plush part of the doll is purely handmade. The eyes are crystal and watery, because cardboard paper is added; the nose is translucent with the use of a light coating," Wang says.

王丹凤表示：“裁剪、缝纫、绣花、塞棉花、装订......每一只‘冰墩墩’毛绒部分均是纯手工制作的。水晶眼闪闪发亮，是因为加入了卡纸。鼻子透亮，是因为采用了亚光材质。”

Making Bing Dwen Dwen is more complicated than ordinary plush toys. It's the first time for the team to make a stuffed toy with a shell. Speaking of the toy's transparent “coat”, Wang says, after more than two months of repeated revisions from proofing to finalization, it was approved by the Organizing Committee of the Winter Olympics.

“冰墩墩”要比普通毛绒玩具更复杂。这是王丹凤团队第一次做带壳的毛绒玩具。提及“冰墩墩”的透明“外衣”，王丹凤透露，从打样到定型，经过两个多月反复修改，才最终得到冬奥会组委会的认可。

The company's display racks also pack mascot dolls from the many important competitions held in China, such as Fuwa from the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the mascot of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo Hai Bao, Nanjing Youth Olympic Games mascot Nanjinglele among others.

If someone said they'd pay you $1,800 to stay off social media for six years, would you do it? Could you?

如果有人说，你六年不使用社交媒体就会给你1800美元（约合人民币11382元），你愿意吗？你做得到吗？

Sivert Klefsaas did just that.

西韦特·克雷夫萨斯就做到了。

"I thought it was awesome," Sivert told CNN Tuesday, "I thought, 'Ah what's 6 more years?'"

In 2016, Lorna Goldstrand Klefsaas challenged her 12-year-old son Sivert to stay off social media until he was 18. If he completed the challenge, she'd award him the cash on his eighteenth birthday. On February 19, 2022, Sivert claimed his prize.

Lorna was inspired by a challenge she heard on the radio called the "16 for 16", where a mother gave her daughter $1,600 when she turned 16 if she stayed off social media, she told CNN. She decided to up the ante to two extra years and $200 more.

Sivert said it wasn't too difficult to live without social media, and he didn't think about it much during the six years. As a 12 year old, Sivert said he wasn't using social media much anyway. The only app he had prior to the bet was Snapchat -- which he deleted a day after trying it out.

"I wouldn't say there was ever a time where I thought I was about to break," he said. "As it went on, it was more of a pride thing."

He also had his friends to keep him up to date on the latest information or trends. "I got to avoid all the unnecessary drama that was on there," Sivert added.

Lorna said she never had to check for any sneakilydownloaded apps. "He's so competitive, it was definitely more for proving a point," she said.

It also meant he had more time to focus on his grades and sports instead, Sivert told reporter.

Now $1,800 richer, Sivert told CNN he hasn't thought about what to buy (when he was 12, he joked he'd get a house), but it'll likely be something for his dorm room at the University of Northwestern St. Paul, which he'll attend in the fall.

After Sivert's success, Lorna, ironically, took to Facebook to share the challenge. She said it was some of the best money she ever spent. Other parents have seemed interested in trying it out too, she told CNN.

Sivert is the youngest of four children, and his three older sisters all used social media growing up. Lorna said there were times she felt her daughters "got too engrossed" in their apps and feeds.

"It was affecting their mood, their friendships and was kind of a depressant," she said. When one of her daughters was 16, Lorna took away her phone because of it. Lorna says her daughter later thanked her for doing so, as it improved her mood.

China accused the United States on Wednesday of fueling tensions and creating panic on the Ukraine issue, and urged all parties concerned to be responsible and work for peace.

周三，中国谴责美国在乌克兰问题上一味推高紧张、制造恐慌，并敦促有关各方应该切实负起责任，为和平而努力。

"It is irresponsible to add fuel to the flames on the one hand while blaming those who fight the fire on the other hand," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a daily news briefing.

外交部发言人华春莹在例行记者会上表示：“如果有人一边火上浇油，一边指责别人救火不力，那么这种行为是不负责任的。”

Unlike the US, which keeps sending weapons to Ukraine, China believes the door to a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine issue has not fully closed, and it will continue to promote peace talks in its own way, Hua said.

华春莹表示，与美方不断向乌克兰输送武器形成鲜明对比的是，中方坚信和平解决乌克兰问题的大门并没有完全关上，并将继续以自己的方式劝和促谈。

"We welcome and encourage all efforts that are committed to diplomatic resolution," she said.

The spokeswoman said that those who accused China of contradicting its stance on respecting national sovereignty and territorial integrity were "either driven by ulterior motives or deliberately distorting or misinterpreting China".

"The Ukraine issue has its complex historical background, and its involvement until now is the result of the interplay among different and complex factors," Hua said.

"When the US, in violation of its agreement with Russia, expanded the North Atlantic Treaty Organization eastward five times to the doorstep of Russia and deployed a large amount of offensive military weapons, have they ever considered the consequences of cornering a major power to a desperate situation?" she asked.

The principle of indivisible security, which broadly states that the security of any state is inseparable from others in its region, has been written into several documents that Russia has signed with the US, including the Helsinki Final Act.

But the US obviously didn't abide by its commitments, Hua said, adding that the US has not responded to Russia's security guarantee proposals.

On Tuesday, the US and its European allies announced an array of sanctions against Russia, with measures included blacklisting two major banks and halting the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline.

Hua said that China never thinks sanctions are the best way to solve problems and opposes any illegal unilateral sanction.

Statistics from the US Treasury Department showed that the previous US administration issued about 3,800 new sanctions. Since 2011, the US has imposed more than 100 sanctions on Russia.

根据美国财政部公布的数据，美国上一届总统任期内实施的制裁高达3800项。2011年以来，美国对俄罗斯实施的制裁就已有100多次。

"But did the US sanctions solve any problem? Does the world become better because of the US sanctions? Will the Ukraine issue be naturally resolved thanks to US sanctions? Will European security be better guaranteed with the US sanctions against Russia?" Hua asked.

华春莹问道：“但是，美方的制裁解决问题了吗？世界因为美方的制裁变得更好了吗？乌克兰问题会由于美方对俄罗斯实施制裁而自然解决吗？欧洲安全将由于美方对俄制裁而变得更有保障吗？”

Noting that the illegal unilateral sanctions issued by the US already caused severe difficulties to relevant countries' economies and livelihood, Hua said that the US should not undermine the legitimate rights and interests of China and other parties when dealing with the Ukraine issue and US relations with Russia.

华春莹还指出，美国等一些国家的非法单边制裁，已经给相关国家经济和民生造成严重困难。美方在处理乌克兰问题和对俄关系时，不得损害中方和其他方面正当权益。

Ruan Zongze, executive vice-president of the China Institute of International Studies, said that the US is provoking tensions and adding risks to the Ukraine issue by providing offensive weapons such as antitank missiles to Ukraine.

After all 109 medal events were decided, the closing ceremony was held on Sunday at the National Stadium in Beijing.

Shipmentsof 5G phones in China went down 3.5 percent year-on-year to over 26.32 million units in January this year, data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology showed. Thevolumeaccounted for 79.7 percent of the country's total mobile phone shipments during the period according to the research institute.

看懂冬奥：冰壶上为什么会亮红灯和绿灯？| What are those red and green lights on curling stones?

If the ball goes out of bounds in say, a soccer game, it’s up to the referees to call the violation. But in a high-level curling match, the stones are somewhat self-policing—thanks to the red and green lights atop each one.

As long as the curler releases the stone before the front of it crosses the first red line (the “hog line”), the lights will stay green, and play will continue. If you see the red lights come on, that means the curler kept their hand on the handle too long, committing a hog line violation. The shot is disqualified, and the stone is quickly removed so it doesn’t interfere with other stones on the curling sheet.

The detection system, called “Eye on the Hog,” dates back to the late 1990s, when University of Saskatchewan engineering professor Eric Salt suggested that some of his advanced electrical engineering students invent one for a class project. With his help, they did, and Canadian engineering company Startco modified their design and brought it to market. The Canadian Curling Association soon adopted it for official use, and its popularity grew from there.

Basically, there’s a magnetic strip installed beneath the ice slightly behind the hog line. Inside the stone is an electrical circuit whose current is affected when you’re touching the handle. If you’re still touching the handle when the stone crosses the in-ice magnet, it’ll set off the battery-operated red LEDs. Release the handle before the stone reaches the magnet and the green lights will flash until the stone gets there. At that moment, the flashing will switch to a steady green to indicate that the release was valid.

This system also explains why the player releasing (“delivering”) the stone doesn’t wear a glove on their delivery hand: They’re not allowed to, since gloves inhibit the touch sensor.
