Lending a helping hand

Volunteers play an integral part in the running of every Olympics, and the volunteer work at Beijing 2022 will leave an important legacy for years to come, according to the Games' organizing committee.

Teng Shengping, director-general of the volunteer department of the Beijing organizing committee, said that after the Games an extensive review will be carried out to learn from, transform and promote volunteer work in the areas of human resources and digital and intellectual heritage.

"After the Beijing Olympic andParalympicGames we will keep in touch with the volunteers to preserve talents for development. We will also review all the mechanisms, policies and projects formulated for the Gamesso they can contribute to the Olympic culture," Teng said.

There are more than 18,000volunteers at the Beijing Winter Games, including those working directly in the competitions, as well as venue management, language services and media services. Among them, 63 percent are working in the Beijing competition zone, 12 percent in Yanqing and 25 percent in Zhangjiakou. About 94 percent of all the volunteers are aged under 35.

"Before they serve the Games, all of them received extensive training, including those for both general and specific positions," Teng said.

With the Games taking place during Spring Festival, a time annually when families traditionally reunite, a special "home for volunteers" was created inside the closedloopto provide a morefestive atmosphere for them.

Teng said there were greater challenges in organizing the Winter Games volunteers compared to the Summer Games in 2008, because of the pandemic and a lack of knowledge and experience in serving winter sports.

"We added more training for pandemic prevention beforehand and had more medical volunteers at all the venues," Teng said.

"To cope with the working conditions in the mountain areas and low temperatures, we raised the requirements in recruiting volunteers, requiring them to be in better physical condition and to have more knowledge of winter sports."

Serving at the Games has been a special experience for the volunteers.

"We all love volunteering and we love the Olympic Games, so we became the volunteers here,"said Wei Yining, apostgraduatestudent from Beijing Forestry University.

"The whole world is fighting against the COVID-19 pandemic, but because of the Olympic Winter Games, we gathered together and united together. It's so valuable for us to be together and inspire each other.

"I hope the warmth from all the volunteers here can stay with you all the time. And together with this unforgettable experience, we can head toward the future."

Dressed as a roaring tiger-but with no tail grabs-Frenchwoman Lucile Lefevre stole the show at snowboarding Big Air's qualifying round on Monday as she celebrated the Year of the Tiger in her career finale at Beijing 2022.

Donning an orange-and-black suit while miming a pair of claws in the air, Lefevre captured the crowd's attention in her second run, despite opting for a straightforward jump with no tricks due to a knee injury she sustained during the slopestyle competition on Feb 5.

Having decided to retire from the sport after Beijing 2022, the 26-year-old crowd pleaser made her final run on the Olympic stage one to remember-not just for herself but anyone watching the Games, which are taking place in the lunar calendar's Year of the Tiger.

"It is my very last competition. I hurt my knee in the slopestyle, so I was not able to do tricks today. I decided to do the competition, but just do it straighter. It's more fun like this. It's for tiger new year, so everyone wants a picture with me. It was super fun," Lefevre said after her three qualification runs.

"I feel good about it, because the world should be fun. There are a lot of problems in the world. If everyone was peace and easy, the world would be better for sure, that's the message I want to share."

Before soaring into the spotlight on Monday, the head-to-toe big cat suit was already a viral sensation on social media outside of China after its owner, Swiss snowboarder Nicolas Huber, wore the tiger disguise during his downtime at Genting Snow Park in Zhangjiakou.

So Lefevre borrowed the suit from Huber, adding flair to her otherwise ordinary jumps off the towering ramp at Shougang Industrial Park in Beijing.

Lefevre performed the first of her three runs in her standard Team France jacket, before breaking out the tiger suit for her second and third runs. Lefevre scratched at the air for run 2, but after watching a replay, realized the motion just looked funny in mittens. So on her final run, she waved toward the judges' tower instead.

"It was not super beautiful," she said of her claws. "So I decided for the last one to just say Hi to the judges. And especially the French one, because it's a friend of mine."

Asked why Huber had the costume to begin with, Lefevre explained that "he's a crazy man, actually". The 27-year-old Huber has been wearing the outfit for a series of videos on his Instagram account, apparently inspired by Lunar New Year celebrations that overlapped with the start of the Winter Games.

"I asked yesterday if he can give it to me for the day, a special day for me," Lefevre said. "And he said, 'Yes, of course.'"

The two-time Olympian was unperturbed at finishing bottom of the qualification standings, considering simply competing in the Chinese capital was a victory in itself.

Lefevre was diagnosed with osteochondrosis, a rare illness that stunts bone growth, at 3 years old. She had three operations, and doctors told her sports were off the table.

"But then I went snowboarding and made progress. And I'm here (at the Winter Olympics) for the second time," she said.

Ranked as high as seventh in the World Cup rankings in slopestyle, Lefevre has carved out a successful sporting career as a pro snowboarder but came to a decision a year ago that her body could not quite sustain the challenging nature of the high-flying sport anymore.

What happens next? The Upper Alps native plans to enjoy time with her father at his sailing school.

"I may train baby snowboarders," she added.

Beijing 2022 Gets High Marks for Sustainable Artificial Snow

Beijing normally doesn't have much snow in winter, so artificial snow is being used at venues for the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games, with the quality of the white snow drawing praise from many athletes, and even officials.

Artificial snow gives the courses a better and more stable quality.

"This is by far the best man-made snow I've ever skied on," American freestyle skier Ashley Caldwell said at a press conference.

After receiving feedback from many athletes through the training period and first days of competition, Kit McConnell, sports director of the International Olympic Committee, said the participants believe the artificial snow is outstanding.

"The focus is on doing this in a sustainable way, and also ensuring the athletes have an outstanding field of play on which to compete at the Olympic level," McConnell said.

Athletes have told Bernhard Russi, chairman of the International Ski Federation's alpine committee, that the man-made snow was easy to ski on.

Russi, also a former Swiss World Cup alpine ski racer and one of the course designers of the Yanqing National Alpine Skiing Center in Beijing, told China Central Television: "I think for the skiers it's just like paradise."

"In order to have a perfect course for alpine racing, you need man-made snow to get the quality right – compact snow for the power which these racers are able to put down on the snow," Russi said.

Although sometimes mixed with natural snow, artificial snow has mostly been used in competitions in the past five to 10 years, he added.

Snow-making machines were first deployed at the Lake Placid 1980 Winter Olympics in the United States. At Sochi 2014 in Russia, 80 percent of the snow was artificial, and the figure was 90 percent at Pyeongchang 2018 in South Korea.

Cooled water and compressed air are mixed in the snow cannon and shot out into water droplets at an angle. With the help of low temperatures, these droplets will become ice crystals.

There are totally nine types of snow made by snow machines, with different water content. The smaller type number is closer to powder snow. The larger number means the snow is wetter. Drier snow is used in the daytime, while No. 7 or No. 8 snow is used during the nighttime with over minus 20 degrees Celsius.

The use of different types of snow is factored in what's needed for each sport.

"In most cases, No. 5 snow is used," revealed Wei Qinghua, mountain operation manager of the Zhangjiakou Guyangshu venue cluster for Beijing 2022.

On November 7, during the preparation for the Games, Chongli District in Zhangjiakou saw its first snowfall this winter.

But the 20-centimeter-thick snow was cleaned up, because it would be more dangerous to use natural snow as it falls off more easily and brings safety risks.

The snow machines work round the clock, so the staff work in three shifts.

However, there are concerns regarding the environmental hazards of using so much water for snow-making.

The snow machines at Beijing 2022 have completely used renewable energy since the beginning of snow production.

"Water used for snow-making only comes from rainfall and surface runoff, and it can be recycled," Wei pointed out.

"For water from melted snow, we have a reservoir and two lakes which can store it so that it can then be used for agriculture, irrigation, tourism and landscaping."

Kelly Keeps Crushin' It

The list of "firsts" Kelly Sildaru has next to her name continues to grow after she secured bronze on Tuesday at the Beijing Winter Games, becoming the first Estonian athlete to win an Olympic medal in freestyle skiing.

Born in 2002, she has also become the youngest Olympic medalist from Estonia in either the summer or winter edition of the Games.

Wearing a black snow jacket and maroon pants, Sildaru stood out against the brilliant white course during Tuesday's final. With her signature long, blonde hair flowing out from her black helmet, the 19-year-old made one last check on her skis and poles before taking a deep breath and setting off on her run.

The Estonian flagbearer was the last among all 12 athletes to set off in the final after she received the highest score (86.15) during qualification.

She finished her first run with a 900-degree rotation and a tailgrab (grabbing the back of the skis).

Her impressive moves and perfect landing gave her a score of 82.06, enabling her to nail a medal despite mistakes in the second run and a low-scoring third.

Switzerland's Mathilde Gremaud won gold and China's Gu Ailing secured silver.

"My first run was pretty much like a safe run. That run brought me bronze. I mean I'm happy about it, but it would have been better when I could have put down a better run," she said post-race.

Although the failure in the second run blocked her path to the gold medal, Sildaru is still enjoying herself at her first Olympics.

"When I'm skiing, I'm just going to do my best. So I just need to enjoy myself and I'm not trying to focus too much on the medals or on the podium or stuff like that. It's more about my skiing."

Her passion for skiing and hard work have earned Sildaru a series of titles at a young age.

At age 13 in 2016, she became the youngest gold medalist to date at a Winter X Games event, and the first person to win a Winter X Games medal for Estonia. She is also the youngest to win two X Games gold medals.

During the Big Air competition of the 2017 Winter X Games Norway, Sildaru became the first woman to ever land a switch 1260-degree mute and a 1440 degree during a competition.

Because of her young age, Sildaru was not allowed to participate in the World Cup until 2017 in New Zealand, where she won the slopestyle competition.

A knee injury denied her a chance to compete at the 2018 Winter Games, but she later recovered and won a gold medal in slopestyle at the 2020 Youth Olympic Games.

"Problems are not stop signs, they are guidelines," Sildaru once wrote in a caption to one of her photos on Instagram.

What makes Sildaru's achievements even more striking is that she hails from a virtually mountainless nation with an average elevation of around 300 meters.

"I'm usually training where I have competitions," she said. "Like maybe just going there two weeks earlier for my training and competitions, or we just stay longer."

Spring in Finland, summer in France, and couple of months in New Zealand-Sildaru admitted she used to struggle between school and skiing: "It was a little hard at first.

"I graduated this spring, so it's been really nice to just focus on skiing," said Sildaru, who will turn 20 on Thursday.

Sildaru will compete in the halfpipe qualification on her birthday, with the aim to make the final which will be held on Friday.

Su Soars into History Books

Snowboarding prodigy Su Yiming etched his name into the history books by winning China's first Olympic gold in the sport on Tuesday to cap his stunning Games debut.

By cleanly stomping back-to-back 1800 tricks, the teenager landed the biggest prize so far in his young career-gold in the men's Big Air at the Beijing Winter Olympics.

The feat realized a childhood dream to reach the pinnacle of the sport, which he began to learn at the age of 4.

Now with two shinning medals, including a slopestyle silver, hung around his neck, the 17-year-old described his superb Olympic debut as an insane experience that has made his sacrifices worthwhile.

"This feels so surreal that I've finally accomplished what I've dreamed of since I was little," an emotional Su said after finishing his third run as a victory lap.

Su secured the gold with a winning total of 182.5 points from his first two jumps.

"When Beijing won the Olympic bid (in 2015), I was still in elementary school, yet I promised myself that I would try to make it to my home Olympics. To many people, it sounded like an unrealistic goal.

"Now it's become a reality, and even better I have finished on top of the podium. I am so proud of myself and thankful to my coach, everybody who supported me along the way and my country."

Also putting down two excellent runs, Norway's Mons Roisland finished second, 10.75 points behind Su, while Canadian rider Max Parrot won bronze (170.25 points). Parrot edged Su to gold in last week's slopestyle.

Parrot was full of praise for Su, who idolized the Canadian veteran when he was younger.

"I'm really happy I've been able to help him reach his goals and I told him that he's gotta make me push my way to be a better snowboarder as well," said Parrot, a five-time World Cup winner in Big Air.

"I think my goal and also the goals of most of the riders is to promote our sport and to give our love to our sport to anyone else out there and hopefully we have some more younger snowboarders coming soon to the world."

Over the past four years, Su has combined his innate talent with hard work-under the guidance of renowned Japanese coach Yasuhiro Sato-to produce one of the swiftest rises to prominence the sport has ever seen.

When the Shougang Big Air venue hosted its first international event-a World Cup meet in 2019-Su was an obscure qualifier, who didn't even make the final runs.

Just over two years later, Su is the name on everyone's lips at the venue's Olympic debut-drawing the whole nation's attention to the sport he loves.

"The biggest motivation for me is my love for snowboarding," Su said, when asked about the secret to his success. "In snowboarding, I feel like I can demonstrate my own style and creativity. Every time I ride my board, it's always a blissful moment. I hope through my experience, I can inspire more young people to get interested in the sport."

Su's golden day matched fellow teenage skier Gu Ailing, who also claimed gold in Big Air's freeski equivalent on Feb 8 at the towering slope built on the former site of a relocated steel mill.

Boasting multi-medal performances at the Games, both young athletes have shot to celebrity status in the country while attracting hordes of new fans on social media.

Su, a former child actor who featured in action movies, said the Olympic gold will encourage him to seek for more breakthroughs-even beyond his athletic career.

"I enjoy snowboarding just as much as I enjoy acting," said Su, who turns 18 on Friday.

"I think I still have a lot of possibilities to explore in my future career either in snowboarding or in acting. But now I just want to enjoy the moment and celebrate it as the best possible birthday gift."

Athletes are all Smiling and Praising Quality of Beijing 2022, Says IOC Official

    Alwaysa Satisfaction

Dubi introduced that the IOC president Thomas Bach used to have a very important meeting every morning to go through Games coordination, but he called it off just a few days ago, which, as Dubi explained, is "very rare."

"This says a lot about the quality of the organization, the attention to the details," said Dubi. "But in particular, the organizers are doing everything to support the athletes."

"No athletes have said anything critical. On the contrary, they are all smiling and praising the quality of the venues, the quality of the organization, the quality of the accommodation and the food. When the athletes are satisfied, you cannot expect anything more," he said.

"You have the most advanced weather forecasting system, great operators teaming up with the International Federations and the media, whatever the weather throws at us, we're going to meet the challenge."

"I never expected that you would go over and above," he said.

Dubi went on with the natural CO2 refrigeration systems being used at four Beijing 2022 ice venues as it is "far better than anything we had previously," as well as methods used in the Yanqing competition zone, which "will set up the new standard for the future, including in more traditional winter countries."

    Never a Doubt

When being asked if there was a moment of concern about the rescheduling of Beijing 2022, Dubi said "no" without any hesitation.

"When we took the decision to postpone Tokyo, life was suspended. Everybody was confined at home, everything stopped including sports.

Then throughout the summer of 2020, sports resumed, a number of competitions were organized under different circumstances. And we started to see it's possible to host an event on a smaller scale. And then we learned a lot from Tokyo."

"But without the concern of any postponement or big impact, we've never ever had any doubt that it (Beijing 2022) would be delivered," Dubi said.

Dubi also admitted that the degree of sophistication to deliver the Games amid COVID-19 from an operational standpoint as it would already require hundreds of policies and procedures under normal circumstances, not to mention the pandemic.

As some have claimed that it is impossible to experience Beijing and China in a closed-loop, Dubi shared a different point of view.

"The number one objective was to hold the Games in a safe way, and the closed-loop is delivering exactly that," he said. "And we are interacting with the citizen of Beijing through the volunteers, the organizing committee and the technical officials. It's an experience of the Olympic Games in times of COVID-19. But number one, everybody is safe."

"What amazed me at the time and continue to amaze me today is the dynamism, the incredible will of China and Beijing as a city to develop itself to constantly strive for improvement," Dubi noted.

"I can imagine that after the success of 2008 and 2022 [Olympic Games], China will continue to be incredibly successful."

Gold in Women's Aerials a First for China

Even when all the scores of the finalists in the women's freestyle skiing aerials were out on Monday evening, Xu Mengtao still couldn't believe she had just clinched the Winter Olympics gold medal that she had strived so long to win.

"Did I win? Did I win?" she shouted. Yes, the four-time Olympian finally did it at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. The gold is also China's first in the event.

At the moment the winner was announced, spectators at the competition venue, Genting Snow Park in Zhangjiakou, Hebei province, erupted with joy.

As of Monday night, China had won five gold medals at the Beijing Winter Games, equaling its best previous result at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games.

Xu received 108.61 points for her final jump with three somersaults, which had a degree of difficulty of 4.293-the highest for female athletes. Hanna Huskova of Belarus took the silver with 107.95 points, followed by Megan Nick of the United States with 93.76.

After successfully landing her final jump, Xu knew she had nailed it and screamed into the cold air, with the temperature hovering around minus 23 C.

Soon afterward, Ashley Caldwell of the US, who had been ranked first after the first round of the final and was the last athlete to jump-made a mistake on her landing and finished in fourth place.

"The payoff of hard work may come late, but it will come for sure," Xu, 31, said emotionally. "It's been a long journey, and I always have faith in myself."

Xu already owned 27 World Cup golds and received the highest score in the world for jumps among female aerial skiers. But she only managed to bring home a silver medal from the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.

Due to injuries, she finished sixth and ninth at Vancouver 2010 and Pyeongchang 2018, respectively, so winning Olympic gold has been a "lifelong desire", Xu said.

"I'm just super excited. This is the first gold medal won by China in women's aerials, and it's just super cool," she said after the victory. "I just wanted to do the best tricks I could and I did it, and that was all."

China's Han Xiaopeng had won the country's first men's aerials Olympic gold medal at the 2006 Turin Winter Games.

Caldwell said she was proud of Xu, whose nickname is Taotao.

"Taotao has been pushing triples for longer than I have, and I respect her wholeheartedly. For her to win the gold medal in her own country is an incredible accomplishment, and it brought tears to my eyes," the US skier said.

Xu said she believes systematic training and keeping in good form brought her the gold medal.

"I've been in good shape for the past four years, so I've given my best to prepare for this moment. Today I only come here to see the result," she said.

"It's going to be a sleepless night for me. I will use every minute to enjoy the win."

Why do speed skaters wear glasses?

Why do speed skaters wear glasses?

As of The reasons skiers and snowboarders don goggles or glasses might seem a little obvious, especially if you’ve ever hit the slopes yourself. Sunlight reflected off the snow can make it hard to see, and UV rays can even damage your eyesight. Special colored lenses also create contrast, so your whole path won’t look like one flat expanse of whiteness. Not to mention that eyewear shields your eyes from any snow you displace (or that the wind blows into your face).

Olympic speed skaters, meanwhile, are racing inside on smooth ice. So why do they wear glasses?

According to NBC Olympics, glasses can increase visibility on indoor tracks, too, and some skaters’ lenses are tinted to help with that. And while the ice may look smooth from a distance, those sharp blades can kick up ice chips that could pose problems if they end up in your eyes. In the event of a crash, shatter-proof glasses also protect skaters’ eyes from errant blades and body parts.

But the biggest reason speed skaters opt for eyewear just might be their speed. Short-track speed skaters (who race around a roughly 111-meter track) can go as fast as 30 miles per hour or more, and long-track speed skaters (whose track is 400 meters long) sometimes hit about 35 miles per hour. The wind resistance generated by such speed—in a chilly arena—is enough to make any skater’s eyes start streaming with tears. Picture leaning your head out the window of a car that’s going around 35 miles per hour on a cold day: You’d probably want to be wearing glasses, too.

That said, glasses aren’t a requirement, and you’ll occasionally see speed skaters with uncovered visages. Belgium's Stijn Desmet, for example, has raced in Beijing without eyewear, as has China’s Zhang Chutong.

Gao glides to glory

Gao Tingyu broke a decades-oldjinxwhen he won Saturday's men's 500m speed skating final at Beijing 2022.

The 24-year-old made history at the National Speed Skating Oval by becoming the first Chinese opening-ceremony flagbearer to win gold at either edition of the Olympics in the nation's 42-year Games history.

Clocking an Olympic-record 34.32 seconds to beat Cha Min-kyu (34.39) of the Republic of Korea and Wataru Morishige (34.49) of Japan, Gao also became the first Chinese man to top the podium in an Olympic speed skating event.

The previous record was 34.41, set by Haavard Holmefjord Lorentzen of Norway four years ago in Pyeongchang, where Gao won bronze.

"I did what I promised-to upgrade the bronze to gold," Gao said. "There was noflagbearer jinx. I raced on home ice and I absolutely gave it my all."

Born in Yichun, a city in Northeast China's Heilongjiang province, Gao started skating at the age of 8. After impressing in the junior ranks, he soon emerged as a strongcontenderon the international stage, claiming 500m gold at the Asian Winter Games in February 2017.Ten months later at a World Cup meet in the United States, he set a new national record (34.34) over the distance.

After his breakthrough at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics, Gao continued his upward curve, winning the 500m at a World Cup meet in Poland in November 2021, and finishing second in Calgary, Canada, later that season.

On Saturday, Gao raced in the seventh of the 15 pairs, and shot upto the top of the rankings with his Olympic record, which the likes ofdefending championLorentzen and reigning world champion Laurent Dubreuil of Canada could not beat.

Gao said the main difference from his triumphant Beijing run compared to his bronze-medal finish in Pyeongchang was his mentality.

"This time I skated on home ice and I felt both nervous and excited, which is good for competing in important races," Gao said.

Despite his record time, Gao still wasn't totally satisfied with his performance.

"I pulled a leg muscle yesterday, so I didn't skate in my optimum physical condition. I reckon I could shorten the record more," said Gao, who despite his lightning-fast heroics on ice describes himself as a person who likes to live life in the slow lane.

"I like the sound of wind beside my ears when I skate. It feels exciting," said Gao, whodrapedhimself in the national flag to celebrate around the infield of the oval.

His victory earned applause fromdethronedchamp Lorentzen, as well as a fellow Chinese Olympic hero, Zhang Hong.

"He was impressive. He's been the favorite all season, since he skated so fast in the first World Cup meet. He raced so fast that everyone thought it would be impossible to beat him here at the Olympics," said Lorentzen, who finished 15th. "It's cool to see that he succeeds on home soil. I congratulate him."

Zhang, China's first Olympic gold medalist in speed skating, was thrilled to see a Chinese man finally top the podium in the sport.

"I'm very glad to see my championship has been passed on after eight years," said Zhang, who retired in 2018."Gao is more confident and more mature than me. I hope he can enjoy the moment.

"Now I can say to the world that we have the best speed skaters, the best venue and we are truly a winter sports country."
