花滑运动员们为什么转不晕？|Why Can Figure Skaters Twirl Without Getting Dizzy？

Figure skating is an ice sport where athletes wear bladed skates and perform various acrobatic movements. They skate on the ice to music and are judged according to their accuracy and the difficulty of their maneuvers. In the Olympic Winter Games, a total of five figure skating events are contended, including the men’s and ladies’ singles, ice dance and pairs where men and ladies compete together, and mixed team skating.

Within each routine, a skater receives two sets of scores: the technical element score (TES) and the program component score (PCS). The PCS is based primarily on presentation, while the TES evaluates the difficulty and completion of the routine (things like spins and jumps).

The short answer is training, but to really grasp why figure skaters can twirl without getting dizzy requires an understanding of the vestibular system, the apparatus in our inner ear that helps to keep us upright. This system contains special sensory nerve cells that can detect the speed and direction at which our head moves. These sensors are tightly coupled with our eye movements and with our perception of our body's position and motion through space. For instance, if we rotate our head to the right while our eyes remain focused on an object straight ahead, our eyes naturally move to the left at the same speed. This involuntary response allows us to stay focused on a stationary object.

简单来说，靠训练。但要真正弄懂花样滑冰运动员为什么不会转晕，我们需要先了解前庭系统，即内耳中帮助人体保持直立的器官。前庭系统包含特殊的感觉神经细胞，可以检测头部运动的速度和方向。这些神经传感器与眼球运动，以及人们对自身在空间中的位置和运动的感知紧密相连。例如，如果我们把头向右转，而眼睛依然聚焦在前方的物体上，眼睛自然会以相同的速度向左移动。这种下意识的反应使我们能够盯住静止的物体。

Spinning is more complicated. When we move our head during a spin, our eyes start to move in the opposite direction but reach their limit before our head completes a full 360-degree turn. So our eyes flick back to a new starting position midspin, and the motion repeats as we rotate. When our head rotation triggers this automatic, repetitive eye movement, called nystagmus, we get dizzy.

Skaters suppress the dizziness by learning how to counteract nystagmus with another type of eye movement, called optokineticnystagmus. Optokinetic nystagmus occurs in the opposite direction of the nystagmus and allows us to track a moving object—such as a train whizzing by—with our eyes while our head remains in place. As the first few cars of the train move out of view, our eyes jump back to their initial position to follow the next few, and the motion repeats. Skaters can train themselves to engage this opposing eye movement when they rotate to offset the nystagmus and keep the world from spinning.

Professional athletes employ a variety of other strategies to prevent dizziness, including maintaining a uniform speed. The sensors in our vestibular system can detect only changes in speed, so they fail to sense rotation that takes place at a steady pace. If athletes can manage their speed, they encounter dizziness only while they accelerate into and slow down out of a spin.

Despite missing out on the podium, Yuzuru Hanyu deserves the utmost respect for his Beijing 2022 campaign.

In alast-ditch attempt tosalvagea medal, the "Ice Prince" took on figure skating's most difficult jump－the 4 1/2-rotation quadruple axel.

Hanyu started skating at the age of 4, and made his international debut at the 2008 Junior Grand Prix Merano Cup, where he finished fifth.

After joining the adult ranks, he quickly began torack upsilverwareand milestones. Petra Vlhova realized a lifelong dream and ended Slovakia's wait for an Olympic Alpine skiing medal with victory in Wednesday's women's slalom at Beijing 2022.

A flawless second run on the challenging Ice River course in Yanqing earned gold for Vlhova, as Austria's reigning world champion Katharina Liensberger took silver, and Switzerland's Wendy Holdener claimed bronze.

Pre-race favorite Mikaela Shiffrin's miserable Olympics continued as she skidded out of contention with a botched first run.

But the day belonged to Vlhova, who despite owning six medals from world championships, had never gotten her hands on any of the Olympic variety.

Her victory in Beijing, though, has been coming. Last year, she won the 2021 World Cup overall title, and she leads this season's standings after seven of nine events.

Moments after a figure skater finishes their program, adoring fans fling gifts onto the ice. There have definitely been some weird ones over the years. Two-time world bronze medalist Jin Boyang of China said it is understandable that an Olympicdebutantmay tumble after 19-year-old Zhu Yi delivered an error-riddled performance in the figure skating women’s singles short program yesterday.

"Zhu is a hardworking woman and shouldn’t be blamed for her first performance on the Olympic stage, good or bad," said Jin, who finished fourth in the men’s singles figure skating at Pyeongchang 2018.

The 24-year-old, who helped China qualify for the team event for the first time in history with a sixth-place finish in the men's short program on Friday, delivered four well-executed jumps out of seven total and finished fourth in yesterday's free skate with 155.04 points.

"The first combination was so fast. I don't even remember what happened. But when I landed the flip, it was nice, and I felt like I totally pulled it off. But, unfortunately, that didn't happen.”

Zhu was born to Chinese parents in the US city of Los Angeles, California. She won the women’s title in the novice division of the 2018 United States Figure Skating Championships in San Jose and became anaturalizedChinese citizen the following year.

Jin said he believed Zhu wasgrappling with too much stress. "I fully understand her position. I have been there, too," he said.

"She's under huge pressure as China’s last performer in the team event short program and the sole skater in (China's) women's figure skating, especially after her selection over two other women.
