In the past few months I went from having just over 30,000 followers on Instagram to 76,000 - and listen: I’m not using all the typical tips and hacks you hear. I don’t edit my Reels in the Reels editor, I’m not using a ton of hashtags, or being super specific about the time that I post at. And my top-performing videos aren’t necessarily even following trends! You don’t need to use all of those popular tactics to grow with Reels, and in fact, I think sometimes creators get so caught up in all those little tricks that it holds them back - because they miss out on implementing the strategies that actually help you grow.

So in this episode, I’m going to tell you how I make Reels that help you grow - Reels that get 20K, 50K, and even 100K views and healthy engagement. Let’s do it!

Instagram has over 1.32 billion active users worldwide… and because of that, it’s a great way for content creators or brands to grow and widen their audience. However, starting from zero can be a daunting task.

But, as the Chinese philosopher, Lao Tzu, once said…“A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.”

And that couldn’t be more true. Honestly, I imagine where I would be now if I wouldn’t have just started all those years ago. It’s been a really long journey and there were many times when I questioned if it was worth it, but now, seeing where it has all taken me, I know it was. In my opinion, the hurdle of those first 1000 followers can be the hardest. If you can get over that hump sometimes it’s all the inspiration and momentum you need to get that ball rolling.

So today, I want to really break it down and give you some actionable steps that you can take to get to those first 1000 followers. This is a no-BS approach, no gimmicks, no hacks, just literal steps that you should be taking if you want to take this whole “Instagram thing“ seriously. so, let’s do this.

It's easy to fall victim to the fear of judgment from others. We tend to hold back from expressing ourselves or pursuing our passions for fear of being labeled as "weird" or "cringy". But let me tell you… you should never let the fear of social judgment hold you back from pursuing a career in content creation. I know that can be easier said than done, but I have learned from experience - it’s worth it. I have been on YouTube for over 10 years and the majority of my older videos can only be described as awkward and cringy, but if I hadn’t started then (despite how others might have felt about it), I would never be where I am now. But, feeling cringe never truly goes away - it’s more about embracing it and loving yourself, cringe and all. So you're thinking of starting a podcast in 2023? Even though the podcast world has the reputation of being oversaturated, we’ve all seen the memes, the fact is, there is still a lot of space for high-quality, well-produced podcasts to shine through. And before you get discouraged - it doesn't take a ton of money or years of expertise to create a great podcast. More than anything, you just need interesting subject matter, and a passion for talking about it - and all the other technical details will sort themselves out.

On YouTube, I made the ultimate guide to starting a podcast, where I go over all the technical bits. I’ll have a lead in the show notes. But today, we're going to talk about growth and how to set the foundation for a successful podcast in 2023. And what exactly does a successful podcast mean?

As you may be familiar with, creators are able to make pretty significant incomes from podcasts. According to this awesome video from Shelby Church, podcasts with high listenership can be making tens of thousands of dollars per episode. Even podcasts with more modest listenership, like mine, can generate sustainable revenue. Not only can you monetize a podcast in the traditional sense of selling sponsorship slots, but you can also use a podcast to generate leads to your business - which is a big part of my personal podcast strategy. Even without considering the financial side, podcasts can be a great way to grow your audience, funnel them to your other platforms like Instagram or Youtube, and make new connections and learn new creative skills.

I have been the repurposing queen for years now and I am always recommending this to other content creators, especially when they’re first starting out. Most of us have heard the phrase “don’t reinvent the wheel”.
