This is a 6 minute summary of the NATURE science magazine article on Relative Fat Mass ( RFM).
    https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-018-29362-1
Nature Magazine in Aug 2018 published research indicating a new simple way of estimating body fat percentage. It's called Relative Fat Mass (RFM). It avoids the systematic errors of Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI typically underestimates fat percentage in women and overestimates it in men.
The RFM uses only waist circumference and height. It works for all ethnicities. The model was developed using publicly available data from the National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The research included the definitive body fat measurement device- DEXA, or Dual Energy Xray Absorptiometry.

  • Low Fasting Glucose as a Risk for DM/CVD???- FORD BREWER MD MPH
Believe it or not, there is a very large, valid study in a great science journal showing that low fasting blood glucose is a risk factor for diabetes (T2DM) and Cardiovascular Disease (CVD). Really? Here's the story...
This was a huge study. It was done as a part of a national Japanese population study of 40 to 70 yo. There were 2 clarifications:
    1. the increased risk started in the 70s and lower; and
    2. this has been associated with increased smoking and inactivity in similar populations.
This still leaves other questions. But I don't think it means people with low fasting glucose and a great lifestyle ( good exercise, good diet, no smoking) have any increased ford brrisks to consider based on this study.

  • Mitochondria & Aging - FORD BREWER
WARNING -This article is for science geeks. It covers a scientific review article in 2018 on the role of mitochondria in aging. The Free Radical Theory was actually first published in 1957. It shows how oxidation provides the power of mitochondria. But the resulting Free Oxygen Radicals cause mtDNA damage and decrease mitochondrial function and mitogenesis(building new mitochondria). More recent evidence demonstrates mitohormesis. That's the fact that lower doses of poisons end up prolonging life by causing an adaptive change in the mitochondria. Mitohormesis is still a work in progress.
But we know how to improve mitochondrial function. Exercise (HIIT) and calorie restriction/fasting.

  • Gum Disease, Heart Attack & CV Inflammation 2019 -Doug Thompson DDS & Ford Brewer MD
I interview a friend and Colleague, Doug Thompson. He's a dentist. To help patients get better CV inflammation care, she formed the Wellness Dentistry Network. It's now over 120 dentists throughout the country helping patients understand CV inflammation.
We talk about the WDN CV inflammation screening program. We also talk about the science linking gum disease and heart attack. Check out the WDN website at https://wellnessdentistrynetwork.com/
John Lorscheider did a video on the definitive science article in gum disease and the CAUSAL relationship with a heart attack.

We also discuss how you can find out how much cv inflammation you have.

  • Diabetic-Level Glucose Spikes Seen Even in Healthy Adults pt 1- FORD BREWER MD MPH
Stanford U graduate student Heather Hall and Genetics Department chair Michael Snyder have just published an article in PLOS Biology
titled Gucotypes reveal new patterns of glucose dysregulation.
Now that simple, affordable Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) is available, the studies are starting to come out showing that adults with totally normal standard glycemic evaluation (no diabetes or prediabetes) actually can surprising variation. In other words, people that were thought to be normal may actually have prediabetes (15%) or even full-blown diabetes (2%). The only surprise to me is this; I thought it might be higher.

  • B12 Deficiency - what’s the best test? Methylmalonic acid & homocysteine - FORD BREWER MD MPH
Docs & patients often overlook Vitamin B12 deficiency. The above two articles give an excellent overview of the problem. The NEJM article provides a great science review of the topic. Over 25% of patients do not have anemia, and many patients have normal vit b12 serum levels. However, Methylmalonic acid is almost always elevated. And homocysteine is usually elevated.
I provide a brief overview of the general topic of Vit b12 deficiency.

  • People & Environments: The Lancet Low Carb Studies - FORD BREWER MD MPH
The Lancet Low Carb/Diet studies (ARIC & PURE) both appear to be good science. Why, then, do they indicate what appears to be opposite conclusions? I think, rather than argue immediately that one of the studies is wrong, we need to study the details further. There were some major differences in the study populations. The PURE study looked at a dozen populations all over the world. It included some of the poorest countries in the world. An example is Bangladesh, war tor stricken by poverty, with entire communities living on top of trash heaps. The ARIC study follow-up, (which is being interpreted as saying "Low carb diets kill you"), drew predominantly middle-income Caucasian & African-American communities. Asian and Middle-Eastern communities were less than 1% of the study population.

Sulfur is a major active component of Glutathione, which the Functional Medicine community calls "the mother of all antioxidants". Glutathione supplements aren't absorbed well. But Glutathione is made by the body from N Acetyl Cysteine, which IS absorbed well.
