  • Overweight? Does Exercise still help?- FORD BREWER
Many of us have heard of overweight tri-athletes. And most of us are not exactly where we want to be with our diet or our weight. In fact, weight and BMI can get confused with muscle vs fat content. This is called the Schwarzenegger effect. And malnutrition can occur in multiple stages of life (elderly, infants, and young people with unhealthy methods of weight loss).
But what about the majority, who struggle with being overweight and keeping a healthy diet? Does exercise overcome the damage of poor diet and obesity?
This video will examine the science.

  • Low Carb or Not? - Glycemic Index from Food Surveys pt 1- FORD BREWER MD MPH
This is the first in a series on Low Carb Dietary Recall Research. Glycemic Index is the impact on blood sugar by foods. The Glycemic Load measures the impact of a meal. Daily Glycemic load would cover and total all food during the day.
Standardized software (The NDSR - Nutrition Data System for Research) is used by nutritionist interviewers to find matches to the foods. After the food matches are made, the glycemic index must be calculated. That's done using other standard databases (the International Table of Glycemic Index and Glycemic Load Values and the University of Sydney online databases).
After these data are found, calculations have to be made. The frequency and amount of foods ingested must then be calculated. Findings were blinded and replicated. Repeat calculations were found to have a high correlation.

  • Dietary Carbs, Fatty Liver and Genetics (148MM) - FORD BREWER MD MPH
Why do sweets fatten our livers? The above articles describe the first prospective study demonstrating that overfeeding carbohydrates to obese humans causes NAFLD (Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease). They measured this using MRI, showing a 27% increase in liver fat content. They also demonstrated increased DNL ( De Novo Lipogenesis) by measuring increased levels of palmitic acid, Triglycerides, and glycerol.

  • Fatty Liver(NASH, NAFLD) - definition & causes- FORD BREWER
Fatty liver is rapidly becoming the big liver problem, replacing both Hepatitis C and alcohol. It's now the #1 cause of liver transplants in women and in patients less than 50 years old. It's silent; there are no symptoms. There is a progression from obesity/type 2 diabetes to fatty liver (NAFLD or Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease) to inflammation (NASH or Non-Alcoholic Steato Hepatitis)(in 20%) to cirrhosis and even Hepatocellular Carcinoma (in less than 3%).

  • Weight Loss & Prevention Science: Intermittent Fasting vs. Time Restricted Eating/pt1 - FORD BREWER MD MPH
This video covers a great science review article by 2 prominent authors in the fasting space: Valter Longo and Satchin Panda. This first part covers some of the original science showing that fasting works in terms of both longevity and biomarkers for chronic diseases. (The second video will cover the importance of circadian rhythm coordination with eating.)

  • Is Your Doc Missing Your Diabetes? - FORD BREWER MD MPH
In this video, we look at real-life statistics on diabetes. These stats show the difference between most docs and really good, prevention-focused docs. Prevention-focused docs diagnose diabetes earlier. They also diagnose the manifestations of diabetes earlier. This helps YOU focus and deal with this much earlier. How important is it? This is the cause of over 90 % of vascular plaque & inflammation. Those are, in turn, the major causes of heart attack, stroke & dementia. And those, in turn, are the major causes of death & disability.

  • Vitamin B12: How to Choose the Right Supplement - John Lorscheider - FORD BREWER MD MPH
Vitamin B12 deficiency has many causes and is quite common. Age, prescription and OTC medications, impaired digestion, malabsorption issues, and vegan diets are just a few of the problems leading to low B12 levels. This video discusses the various forms of B12 for those who are actually deficient.
About John Lorscheider - John is a frequent contributor and moderator of our YouTube channel. He’s also a PrevMed patient. Like most of us, John’s family and personal history include significant cardiovascular risk. He also developed the PrevMed Community Forum at https://759241a66b89-003789.vbulletin.net/
John came from a technical background and spent his entire career in providing engineered fluid process systems and equipment to industry, as well as performing root cause failure analyses for his customers.
His own study and research made it clear he wasn’t getting the whole story about prevention from his docs. They just didn’t know. So he’s been in several roles of running prevention medical groups to help further the science.

  • TMAO & CV RISK - FORD BREWER MD MPH
TMAO is TriMethylAmineOxide. It appears to be a major methyl donor, therefore involving the oxidation/reduction metabolism of the body. It is created by the liver by oxidizing TMA - TriMethylAmine. TMA is created by gut bacteria. And gut bacteria create TMA from 2 major precursors: choline & carnitine. These are key parts of omnivore diets, especially the animal part of an omnivore diet.
This is the landmark New England Journal of Medicine article of 2013.
It demonstrated that: TMAO levels in the blood clearly come from dietary choline. It also demonstrated that people with high TMAO levels heart much higher rates of heart attack & stroke.
Why, then would anyone ignore this? Obviously, the non-vegan community has done just that - ignored it. Or is there something else? Yes. It has to do with kidney function. There is a confounder in these studies. It has to do with kidney function. It appears that TMAO is cleared quickly enough to not cause damage in people with normal kidney function. With inadequate kidney function, it is not. That, assuming it's true, explains some things. But it leads to a whole new set of questions & problems.
