  • Muscle Loss (Sarcopenia): Dangerous & Common - FORD BREWER MD MPH
    This is far more common than we think! And it's VERY LETHAL!.
    https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/proceedings-of-the-nutrition-society/article/ageing-well-a-review-of-sarcopenia-and-frailty/A34C02F64079C6EA10D10E1EF9D930AE
    This is a video on the above article. It talks about the increasing prevalence and importance of frailty and muscle loss. Frailty is more functional and conceptual, while muscle loss is objective and visual. "Rise & walk" and walking speed are both objectives, easy and popular ways to measure these. Besides falls and cardiovascular risk, survival of surgery and other stressors is greatly dependent on muscle mass and frailty.

  • Lethal Muscle Loss, CV Inflammation & Mitochondria: the Nature Article - FORD BREWER MD MPH
    Loss of muscle is lethal in older people. It begins to go way up in the mid-60s. There is an increased risk of disability associated with falls. But this study in Nature magazine shows that the same risks for CV inflammation are also risks for muscle loss. The mechanism is not known. But it's believed to be loss of blood supply due to TN-F, MPO, Lp-Pla2,... In short - CV inflammation.

  • Iron Deficiency (pt 2): Cognitive Disability - FORD BREWER MD MPH
    Iron deficiency is a major cause of failure in neurocognitive development throughout the world. Kids tend to outgrow their source/stores of iron. This happens in the first 6 months of life. It's difficult to supplement for several reasons. It impacts behavior, emotions, and memory. It impacts the nerve mitochondria and therefore the hippocampus, MAO of the striatus, and myelin development.

  • How to Avoid Your Heart Attack: TheHealthyLifeSummit.com : Pt 3:- FORD BREWER MD MPH
    This video contains excerpts from Ford's presentations at the original Orlando Healthy Life Summit last year. We'd love to have you attend the next one on March 22-24, 2019.
    This video is part of a series containing information and topics covered in the Healthy Life Summits.
    Other topics include:
    - David Meinz's story & content (He's a career public speaker/nutritionist). His dad died at age 56 from a heart attack. David found he had the same risk. He was able to reverse his arterial age;
    - Doug Thompson, DDS - The Healthy Life Summit has been so popular with dentists that we have obtained CE (continuing education) credit for dental licensure. There will be concurrent non-dentist sessions during any dental professional presentations;
    - Spectracell - this is a scientific way to test and focus on micronutrients.

  • Are you Feeling Lucky? Fructose vs Glucose & Sucrose - FORD BREWER MD MPH
    Does fructose really have a significant metabolic impact compared to glucose and sucrose? This article compared the immediate impact of 50g Fructose to 50g of glucose and 50g of sucrose. The immediate results were very different and very interesting.
    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4290803/
    Fructose didn't raise blood glucose, insulin, or triglyceride level. Glucose and Sucrose did. On the other hand, Fructose caused an immediate rise in CV inflammation as measured by C Reactive Protein. Fructose also caused immediate rises in cholesterol values.

  • Stem Cell for the Knee part 2: Cartilage & Scaffolding- FORD BREWER MD MPH
    This is a Nov 2017 Literature review re: stem cell and PRP treatment of the knee. Knee injury is one of the most common orthopedic causes of disability. And it's growing with the aging and obesity epidemics. There are 2 major competing techniques: PRP and BMAC.
    PRP is Platelet Rich Plasma is common with new standards of over 5 mil platelets/ml of plasma. The attraction of platelets is actually the growth factor contained by the platelets.
    BMAC is Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate. This is usually obtained from the backside of the pelvic bone in a sterile environment. It is minimally processed, simply spun down.
    They repeat the general theme. There is a lot of promise, but research seems to be going too slow. Here are some reasons: 1. outcomes are subjective (pain ); 2. their processes are changing (taking out WBC and adding scaffolding); and 3. failure to standardize and document procedures.

  • Metformin & Vit B12 deficiency 2018- It's real. - FORD BREWER MD MPH
    This video covers metformin and decreased serum vitamin B12. This was a study nested within NHANES, the National Health And Nutrition Examination study. They did confirm a decrease in serum levels of vitamin B12.
    Other studies have shown that it takes about 4 years to see this impact. Government and other standards committees, such as the US Preventive Services Task Force DON'T have recommendations re: this issue. That's because this appears to be a "biochemical" deficiency. In other words, it's not clear that this is related to anemia, depression, neuropathy, or other significant problems.
    Normal supplements did not impact these levels. Higher concentration, specific supplementation, such as B12 injections did impact the deficiencies.
