How do you handle the emotional whiplash of knowing you should stay sober for a while but also feeling like that's unrealistic?
Ambivalence feels like climbing up to the high dive only to chicken out and refuse to jump. And then telling yourself it's not that bad and you like learning lessons the hard way–Cheers! Or secretly thinking it's actually so bad that you probably should go to rehab.
Either way, you can't deal with this today. Which temporarily solves the problem until you wake up in the middle of the night and realize you did it again.
The mistake you're making is to misinterpret your anxiety about over-drinking as a sign that something is wrong with you. That you can't trust or control yourself. Which is why the idea of change starts feeling more and more impossible.
In reality, your anxiety is a sign that you are already in the process of change. The solution is to start measuring your progress instead of making yet another plan to start over.
This is part one of my mini-series on Resolving Ambivalence. In the next five episodes, you'll learn:
🗣The secret to curing alcohol use disorder
🗣️The mistakes that trap you in the cycle of over-drinking
🗣️How to break your emotional attachment to alcohol so drinking loses its appeal
🗣️The invisible obstacle you must overcome to enjoy being sober
When you finish listening, please DM me your takeaways. I'd love to hear from you and I'm happy to answer any questions you have. Find me on Instagram @RecoverwithColleen and Facebook at Recover with Colleen
