Why do you think that it's so hard to stick with your intentions to "drink like a normal" person?"
You may assume that your "off-switch" is broken or that you have an "addictive personality." Or maybe you secretly fear that you really are an alcoholic. Regardless, this is a frustrating and embarrassing problem that feels beneath you.
Most people try to escape the cycle of over-drinking by taking a break to reset your tolerance or even swearing to never drink again. Because we assume that if alcohol is the problem, then sobriety must be the solution.
But "not drinking" is not a coping skill. So once the novelty wears off, we go back to drinking or transfer our addiction to food, marijuana or work.
The bottom line is that trying to control your behavior with the 5 percent of your awareness that is conscious (instead of changing the beliefs that are causing the behavior) doesn't work.
The secret to curing alcohol use disorder is to heal the emotional disconnect that happens when you're scared to feel your own feelings.
Welcome to Part 2 of my mini-series for Resolving Ambivalence: The secret to curing alcohol use disorder. In this episode, you'll learn:
š£The simple reframe that reveals the root cause of the problem
š£Why psychological dependence on alcohol is so much harder to break than physical addiction
