How do you feel when you see people on television sharing a flask around a roaring campfire, enjoying a bottle of red wine with a 5-course meal, or sliding into a steaming bubble bath with a crystal goblet of cold Chardonnay?
No matter how committed you are to drinking less or not at all, scenes that associate drinking with pleasure can trigger temptation. You may experience a burst of discontent, have an urge to finish the cake or start reconsidering your resolve to avoid alcohol.
And it's disheartening to imagine longing for "more" the rest of your life. You deserve to be happy.
But the reason you decided to quit drinking was because you had a problem. And now the story in your head is that you "can't" drink. Because you can't control yourself. And the fact that you even want to drink reinforces your inadequacy. Because you should be over this by now.
The mistake most drinkers make is to use willpower to white-knuckle through random urges for alcohol. With practice, your resistance will improve. But these moments are the weak links in your resilience.
There's a better way.
