Todays guest Hadley Yates love for extensions started at a young age, watching his mother transform with the help of hair extensions. It was this passion for extensions that led Hadley and his husband to opening a London salon in Covent Garden specialising in them. So in this episode I’m curious to learn how did Hadley’s childhood fascination with hair extensions lead to building a successful salon business using Great Lengths hair extensions.

Opening the Hadley Yates Salon in September 2022, it has quickly grown into a team of seven who all share the same passions for hair extensions that aligns with the salon business values and work ethics.

For this episode, we have brought back onto the show Ricky Walters, founder of the head turning SALON64 in Soho.

Ricky is never afraid of breaking from tradition and coming up with original ideas. Something he is continually doing at SALON64. He is passionate about finding ways to combine the benefits of full-time employment and freelance work, and he believes that mentoring and growing is an essential part of making it work.

For years, the only option was to become an employed assistant, hoping to grow into an employed hairdresser while building a client base. But now, some hairdressers are taking an innovative approach and pursuing freelance work instead. By doing something different, they can work on their own terms and explore new creative avenues, while building their reputation.

But Ricky is to reveal in our conversation on why freelancers are discovering they’re not quite as ‘free’ as they had first thought. Also he shares on when meeting and speaking with the freelance community he learned one of the main struggles and something they felt missing as a freelancer is a lack of a mentor. They were crying out for a mentorship style of working to motivate, inspire and drive results.

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to run a small salon business in America? While both the US and UK share a common language and similar cultures, there are significant differences between the two countries when it it comes to running a small salon business. Or is there?

Eric is the owner of his small salon business, Eric Marshall Salon in Nashville, America. He opened his business two years ago, after he stumbled across a previous salon that was a chain salon that had gone out of business.

Then I get to ask questions to Eric on being an American salon owner, from hair trends to staffing, pricing to marketing strategies, and everything in between. Eric shares some fascinating insights with us!

Back in 2014 my love for podcasts began. It was listening to these podcasts that put the seed of thought into me head on producing my very own podcast? Craziness, I can’t do this! Fear and self-doubt was to hold me back from creating a podcast. I’m not good enough! I don’t have the right skills… blah blah blah!

It took me another three years of researching that finally give me the confidence to pluck up the courage and launch the podcast show that you hear today.

On March 18th 2017 the How To Cut It in the Hairdressing Industry podcast was recorded and published. It’s fair to say it’s proably one of the best decisions I have ever made. Thats why we must fight our way through them fears thats holding us back from change. A change that could light up your life and help you reach them dream goals of yours.

Today, I’ll share that story that finally led me to no longer holding back on something that was way outside my comfort zone. I will also reveal how the forthcoming launch of a new project has returned them same old fears of mine. I’m again asking myself, “Am I good enough”!?
