Just the Gist

Gisteners / Glisteners, the trailer for Tiger King 2 dropped last week, & oh my CATNESS it has caused a commotion.

We're serving the gist of what you need to know about the lawsuit Carole Baskin (friend of the podcast) immediately filed against Netflix to try to stop the release of the new series, & also serving the gist of the most important docos you NEED to watch before Tiger King 2 lands.

Consider it your homework for the next two weeks 🙂 And you'll successfully complete one portion of your assignment simply by listening to this episode, which revisits the story of Ron and Joy Holiday: The Cat Dancers.

Before Sigfried and Roy, & long before Joe Exotic, they were THE big cat performers whose story ended in tragedy. Think of it as a prequel to Tiger King, complete with throuple, tigers, sequins, lions, lycra, panthers, perms... & only one survivor.

The original Cat Dancer episode starts at around 5:22 and ends at roughly 63:45.

And here are some useful links to help you complete your homework:

Introducing: “Stories of Gistorical Significance” or “Gists You Might Have Missed”.

Rosie’s taking a little break at “The Spa” for a few weeks, and while she’s away Jacob's revisiting a few of our older episodes and sharing some new information that’s recently come to light, starting with the mystery of JonBenét Ramsey’s murder.

We're coming up on the 25th anniversary of JonBenét's death, and a new documentary about the Ramsey case was released earlier this year, which presents a very different theory of what happened than the one we presented in our original episode...

Listen to Rosie deliver the Gist of JonBenét's murder (recorded in March 2020) before Jacob then gives an overview of the case as presented by folks who believe an intruder killed JonBenét in December 1996.

Original story starts around 5:45

Original story ends & updates start around 46:47

We give you the gist, but if you want to dive in and get more detail

Watch “The Case Of: JonBenét Ramsey” on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBUQO2u-eD4

And watch the newest doco “JonBenét  Ramsey: What Really Happened?” https://watch.foxtel.com.au/app/#/shows/401720/seasons/1/episode/HWW10545552

An extreme anti-abortion law was passed in Texas this month. A woman who seeks an abortion after six weeks can be arrested, along with anybody who aids her in seeking that abortion. $10,000 bounties are being offered to the public to ‘dob’ women in. Considering most women don’t even realise they are pregnant at that early stage, this law effectively bans more than 90% of abortions in the state. Clinics are already turning women away for fear of punishment.

Every woman should have an unequivocal right to make decisions about her own body. It’s that simple.

On the other side of the world, I felt so defeated by this news. Just… overwhelmed by a sense of helplessness. But one thing I’m good at is telling stories, so I figure I can at least use that skill to contribute in a way I know how. I’m one of millions of women who have made this choice about my own body, and I’m in a position to tell that story. It’s not a big contribution, but it’s something I can do.

So here is just the gist of my abortions.

Widely considered the greatest literary hoax of modern times, the story of JT Leroy seems almost impossible to believe. Bursting onto the scene in 2001 with a bestselling book and heartbreaking life story, JT Leroy was a 20-year-old writing prodigy who quickly became the celebrity of the hour. He was photographed at A-List parties. Profiled in magazines. Gus Van Sant wanted to make a movie about him. Winona Ryder cried while giving a speech about him. The Smashing Pumpkins welcomed him backstage at their concerts. Madonna wanted him to join Kabbalah.

But JT Leroy didn’t exist.

So who was this person? And how did they dupe not just Hollywood, but the entire world?

(TW: although JT Leroy turned out to be a fiction, this episode includes brief references to the physical and child sexual abuse described in his books.)

If you’re claustrophobic you’re going to struggle with this one… A lot of you requested this story after our Baby Jessica episode, so you know it’s going to be INTENSE. In 2009, there was a massive 27-hour rescue operation to save John Edward Jones, a man who got stuck in the Nutty Putty Cave - 31 metres underground, in a rock crevice so small and tight that he couldn’t even expand his chest fully to take a proper breath. And… he was completely UPSIDE DOWN.
