I'm so excited to introduce you to Patti LaFleur on the podcast today. She is the former care partner to her beautiful and sweet mom, Linda, who is all over her Instagram and is hands down the cutest thing to grace your feed! Linda had mixed dementia and died in 2022. Not only that, much like me, Patti's father also died just months before her mom passed. Her story is not only one of immense loss, but also inspiration, grace, gratitude, and finding a beautiful perspective on life after loss.Patti brings a wealth of knowledge after caring for both parents, volunteering with people with neurocognitive disorders, and as a community educator for the Alzheimer’s Association. She is also a former educator with her Master's in Instructional Leadership, is a Certified Dementia Practitioner, and so much more. Patti shares her mom's journey and her story on social media to advocate for people living with dementia to change the stigma around the condition. She also just launched her caregiver coaching and consulting business! From her parent's deaths she learned so much about finding selflessness, having patience, and having immense love. How DO we not feel resentful of someone who hasn't experienced loss? I am so excited to welcome this guest today you guys! Kera Sanchez is a mama of two and creator of Legacy Letters—a keepsake journal to leave behind love, advice and support for future generations.And, she’s also a daughter sharing her grief journey with the world much like myself. With this being wedding season, I wanted to put this episode out into the world in a hopefully timely way because I know there are so many people in this community that are perhaps newly engaged, going through the wedding process, or are perhaps very soon about to get married.I want to first start by acknowledging that weddings can be stressful enough, regardless if someone meaningful to you isn’t there to witness your special day–whether they’ve passed away or couldn’t make it, you had a falling out, whatever it is.I feel like I’m pretty well qualified to talk about this topic, particularly because last year I went through two weddings (we had two ceremonies) without my mom and dad. Anticipatory grief is a type that I feel like people don’t—and really almost can’t—understand until and unless they go through it. It’s a type of grief that stays with us for a REALLY long time, as the anticipatory grief is happening but also even after the loss actually happens.It’s a grief I know very well, and it’s a kind that many, many people have and will experience—particularly if there’s a prolonged illness or watching a decline in some way. But it often isn’t talked about or acknowledged nearly enough in terms of how difficult it is. How profound and deep the effects of it can be. Today is a very raw and honest solo episode as a reflection of three years without my dad, Greg Jordan. On this exact day, July 13th, three years ago, my dad succumbed to his prostate cancer.Your gain today is to get to know my dad a little better, but also to just have a very real conversation about the pain around losing a father or father figure. I'm talking about how I'm feeling, what I'm thinking, the hardest parts about being three years out from his death, and what I've learned since he died. The topic of grief and how it affects our relationships continues! I feel like this is a really natural continuation of last week's episode with my husband, John. If you haven't listened to that one yet, definitely go check that out! It is a pretty juicy one—that is episode 9 of the podcast.

In this episode, I'm getting a fellow girlfriend's perspective on relationships and grief and chatting with Shea Wingate. She is a Licensed Therapist and Grief Coach, and truly has a breadth of knowledge when it comes to the grief space. But not only that, Shea has a very painful firsthand experience with loss as well. She goes more in-depth into this in this episode, but the long and short of it is she lost her mom, dad, and sister all in less than two years.

Today, I really wanted to introduce you to her and her story because I think so many aspects of it are things you may be able to relate to or see parts of your own grief in. I know I certainly did. And, with both of us having been in relationships as we were losing the most important people in our lives, she and I had a LOT to talk about here and what that looked like and how it affected us and our partners.
