  • 80: Leah A. - first call

🔸 This is fun! We talk addiction. Would you believe Leah has no knowledge of IFS or parts work going into this call? (She was referred by another caller.)

🔹 Part (Location, Fear, Rather be doing, Age, Needs):
    - the rage
    - the clenching in the chest
    - afraid of… that look on her husbands face… and her fathers face when he was aggressive
    - rather be biking, playing, everything!
    - thinks she’s 8
    - needs space and compassion

🎓 What I'd like to do differently:
There was one point in this call where I waited one extra beat. Call it 5 beats instead of 4. And that’s when she mentioned her father. Pacing is sooo important. Sometimes I wish I could take 5 mins between each questions, but newcomers might think I’m insane

🔸 Who are you when there are no problems to solve? This is mostly me describing my check-in practice.

🔸 We try new things, something I learned from Toni Herbine-Blank: two hands to hold two parts. I don't follow up on check-ins, to give space.

🔹 Part (Location, Fear, Rather be doing, Age, Needs):
    - A busy busy 5 year old

🔸 Hopelessness, and this part is not unblending... I try explicit direct access. We end on a high note.

🔹 Part (Location, Fear, Rather be doing, Age, Needs):
    - Shame Ready to give up

    - In heart

     - Fear of losing it all

🎓 What I'd like to do differently:
This is the type of call I mark as "to revisit with a supervisor". Some people are simply overwhelmed, in tears. I try co-regulating... At least I didn’t panic. Wouldn't call it a complete failure, just tried a lot of different approaches. Please send your comments/feedback on this one!

  • Pro: Bill Tierney with me, James

Bill is a certified IFS practitioner and personal development coach. Twice per week, with co-leader Alison Dyer, he leads a free Parts Work Practice group where anyone can join and practice in groups.

I started LiveIFS because I didn't see any other free & open groups of people getting together to practice. Turns out I just didn't look hard enough...

I highly recommend this group to anyone wanting to learn and practice more.

🔸 James talks to "falling in love", "playing it cool" and the 5 year old. I thought I knew this part so well, turns out there's still lots to learn.

  • 77: Linda A. revisits

🔸 Perfect test scores, but always feeling “not good enough”. This 4yo exile is mad, feels abandoned. (This is our 3rd call, but the first that we’ve recorded.) Lots of tears, difficulty, but I think a resounding success, beautiful. Linda is great with 4 year olds!

🔹 Part (Location, Fear, Rather be doing, Age, Needs):
    - striving and frustration, protectors.
    - The four year old
    - ache in lower back, tension headache
    - needs Linda to listen, and to remember how old this part is.

🎓 What I'd like to do differently:
I’m on high alert when callers present w exiles. I feel like it’s my biggest challenge, and when I get it wrong, it's agonizing. We’ve talked 3 times and Linda is a LMFT with an understanding of IFS, but it’s still a difficult decision for me every time. What do you think? Did we do enough protector checking in here? Sufficient unblending?

🔸 It's magic! Molly unburdens the 10 year old who saw her father being arrested, and never saw him again

🔹 Part (Location, Fear, Rather be doing, Age, Needs):
The protector is disappointment in the pit of the stomach. Wants emotional balance.

The exile is 10. Never got to grieve. Now she can.
