Honored as always to speak with an old friend of mine, Ben Goresky. As a fellow coach of men, we wanted to take an episode to give each other some thoughts on what we're seeing out there in the world of men's work: how do we better ourselves in the current global situation? How do we find personal fulfillment?

We also dig into relationships and discuss different ways to engage in challenging conversations with a partner. Ben's got great great insight, so listen in!

Ben Goresky is a counselor, coach, and podcaster. He coaches men in the areas of addiction, recovery, and relationships. He is a trained addictions counselor with a Health Sciences degree. Ben runs a men’s group for The Samurai Brotherhood, an organization that connects men to their masculine core and leads the way for the evolution of conscious men.

Ben also hosts The Evolving Man podcast and runs relationship workshops for couples with his fiancé Sheleana Aiyana. He focuses on shadow work, men's work, transpersonal psychology, and conscious relationship work to drive success in his clients.

Last week, Zen. This week, a unique perspective on intimacy, relationships, and marriage from Rabbi Manis Friedman. I've been wanting to hear differing ideas from differing traditions on what it means to really cultivate an intimate relationship, and Rabbi Friedman had some interesting things to say! We cover loving someone versus loving things about them, what it really means to marry someone—from a more mystical frame of mind, how a "performance" mindset around sex destroys intimacy, and a lot more.

Rabbi Manis Friedman is a world-renowned author, counselor, lecturer, and philosopher. He combines ancient Torah wisdom with modern wit to captivate audiences around the world. He hosts his own critically acclaimed cable television series, Torah Forum with Manis Friedman, syndicated throughout North America and is known as “Youtube’s Most Popular Rabbi”.

Rabbi Friedman’s first book, Doesn’t Anyone Blush Anymore? was widely praised by the media. He has appeared on CNN, A&E Reviews, PBS, and BBC Worldwide, and has been the subject of articles in the New York Times, Rolling Stone, Seventeen, Guideposts, Insight, Publisher’s Weekly, and others. The book is currently in its fourth printing.

His latest book, The Joy of Intimacy is empowering thousands of couples to replace their loneliness and unfulfilled expectations with a deeply soulful and satisfying relationship. In his private practice, Rabbi Friedman has helped thousands of couples and individuals achieve fulfilling, balanced relationships, through in-person meetings or remote video consultations.

Rabbi Friedman is also a noted Biblical scholar, recognized for his grasp of Jewish mysticism. In 1971, he founded Bais Chana Institute of Jewish Studies in Minnesota, the world’s first yeshiva exclusively for women, where he continues to serve as dean. From 1984 to 1990, he served as a simultaneous translator for the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s televised talks.

Born in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1946, Rabbi Friedman immigrated with his family to the United States in 1950. He received his rabbinic ordination from the Rabbinical College of Canada in 1969 and is a professionally ranked member of the National Speakers Association. His speaking tours take him to every part of this country as well as Israel, England, The Netherlands, South Africa, Australia, Brazil, Venezuela, Peru, Canada, and Hong Kong.

Rabbi Friedman is now using the latest technology to spread morality to a wider audience throughout the world through his books, videos and personal meetings via the launch of itsgoodtoknow.org. He has made it his mission to reach every one of the billion people on Youtube in order to help them improve their relationships and deepen their connection with G-d.

You hear it all the time: enlightenment, awakening, expansion, liberation. Yadda yadda yadda. But...what is it really? Is it even possible to describe? This week, I sit with acclaimed Zen teacher and poet Henry Shukman to try and get the actual Zen take on things. We dig into his own spiritual journey, how to meditate in the Zen way, and how chasing after something can sometimes prevent you from ever getting it.

Henry Shukman is a mindfulness teacher and the spiritual Director of Mountain Cloud Zen Center. He has been trained by Zen several teachers, particularly the roshis Joan Rieck, John Gaynor, Ruben Habito, and Yamada Ryoun Roshi, as well as by teachers and mentors in other traditions. Henry has an MA from Cambridge and an MLitt from St. Andrews, and has written several award-winning books of poetry and fiction.

He currently guides a wide range of students from all walks of life. He received dharma transmission (inka shomei) from Yamada Ryoun Roshi, the abbot of Sanbo Zen, and is a Zen Master of the Sanbo Zen lineage of Kamakura, Japan.

Henry's struggles as a youth, combined with a spontaneous awakening experience at age 19, paved the way for Henry to develop a well-rounded approach to spirituality and meditation, under the guidance of his teachers – one that includes both compassionate concern for the sufferings of the world and the great liberative power of awakening as its foundations.

I've waited a long time for this one! Deeply honored to have spoken with Dr. James Hollis, one of the foremost Jungian analysts. Ever. Period. This conversation focused almost entirely on men and their relationship to fear, women, purpose, direction, and what Jung had to say about all of them. An hour isn't nearly enough for such a heavy conversation, so he'll be returning in the near future. If you've ever been curious about the Jungian approach to therapy, have a listen.

James Hollis, Ph. D., was born in Springfield, Illinois, and graduated from Manchester University in 1962 and Drew University in 1967. He taught Humanities for 26 years in various colleges and universities before retraining as a Jungian analyst at the Jung Institute of Zurich, Switzerland (1977-82). He is presently a licensed Jungian analyst in private practice in Washington, D.C. He served as Executive Director of the Jung Educational Center in Houston, Texas for many years and was Executive Director of the Jung Society of Washington until 2019. He now serves on the JSW Board of Directors. He is a retired Senior Training Analyst for the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts, was first Director of Training of the Philadelphia Jung Institute, and is Vice-President Emeritus of the Philemon Foundation. Additionally, he is a Professor of Jungian Studies for Saybrook University of San Francisco/Houston.

He lives with his wife Jill, an artist and retired therapist, in Washington, DC. Together they have three living children and eight grand-children.

He has written a total of seventeen books, which have been translated into Swedish, Russian, German, Spanish, French, Hungarian, Portuguese, Turkish, Italian, Korean, Finnish, Romanian, Bulgarian, Farsi, Japanese, Greek, Chinese, Serbian, Latvian, Ukranian and Czech.

The next book, The Broken Mirror: Refracted Visions of Ourselves, comes out this year.

Forgive the occasional sound blips. Sometimes Zoom behaves badly! Whether you've just dipped your toes into therapy or have been a long-time adherent, have a listen to this. I love Duey's no-nonsense yet compassionate approach. It's rooted in connection and relationship—a result of his extensive training in gestalt therapy. We cover what gestalt therapy is, what men typically struggle with and why, and how we're all just trying to protect ourselves.

Duey Freeman, MA, LPC is co-founder of the Gestalt Equine Institute of the Rockies, director of the Gestalt Institute of the Rockies, and owner of his psychotherapy private practice. After teaching for 24 years at Naropa University he has decided to move in a more creative direction. Most recently and in collaboration with Kimberly Beck M Ed, he has created: The Coming Home Project and Relational Rewilding Retreats.

As a licensed psychotherapist, teacher, and consultant, Duey has extensive training and experience in gestalt therapy, equine therapy, family therapy, bioenergetIcs, and counseling with children and adolescents. In 1982, Duey joined and revived the Gestalt Institute of the Rockies, he co-founded the Gestalt Equine Institute of the Rockies in 2008. This institute sprang out of the need for thorough training in working relationally with horses as therapeutic partners. GEIR is one of the only Institutes that require competence therapeutically as well as competence in relational horsemanship.

Duey joined Naropa in 1992 and has been extensively involved in the creation of the Gestalt, Human Development, and Family Systems programs. He has helped to develop the Equine section of the Wilderness Therapy certification and degree. He taught for the University of Northern Colorado, traveling across Colorado teaching and working with schools systems supporting teachers to better understand and work with the children they teach. Prior to working in higher education, Duey was a therapist in the school system and a principal of a school.

Throughout the year, Duey partners with professional therapists and skilled horsemen and women throughout the country and world to provide psychotherapy, Gestalt Equine Psychotherapy, parenting and human development workshops, and Relational Horsemanship classes.
