  • Healing from the root cause with mindset work, with Lana Shlafer
On today’s episode we’re digging deeper into our mindset, and how it can either provide a roadblock or unlock the key to our healing, especially when it comes to healing our body image and relationship with food, and healing from the root cause. Lana Shlafer is a mindset coach, podcast host of the Manifest That Miracle podcast and author of the book Manifest That Miracle: Learn Why You Don’t Have What You Want and How to Get It.
    We’re discussing:

Lana’s personal story of overcoming an eating disorder after immigrating to the US at age 12
How Lana figured out what her personal roadblocks to healing were, by finding her root cause of her troubled relationship with her body
The benefits of talk therapy vs. somatic (body-focused) therapy
How your body holds a story of all your past experiences
Why forgiveness is essential for optimal health

The theme for this month’s podcast episodes and guests is pursuing TRUE health and feeling good without diets or protocols – to go against the grain and provide a welcoming alternative to the traditional shame-based January new years resolutions culture. As always, on this show one of my main goals is to show you how you can pursue health and actually feel great from the inside-out (physical, mental, emotional health) without doing diets or cycling through elimination protocols – because remember, if those things actually worked long term, you wouldn’t to ‘reset’ again year after year, month after month, to actually feel good.
Make sure to check out last week’s episode: The dark side of the wellness industry, and how all-or-nothing thinking prevents long-term health and happiness, with Robyn Conley Downs

  • The dark side of the wellness industry, and how all-or-nothing thinking prevents long-term health and happiness, with Robyn Conley Downs
Welcome to the new year! The theme for this month’s podcast episodes and guests is pursuing TRUE health and feeling good without diets or protocols – to go against the grain and provide a welcoming alternative to the traditional shame-based January new years resolutions culture. One of my main goals is to show you how you can pursue health and actually feel great from the inside-out (physical, mental, emotional health) without doing diets or cycling through elimination protocols. Remember, if those things actually worked long term, you wouldn’t to ‘reset’ again year after year, month after month, to actually feel good.
Robyn Conley Downs is an entrepreneur and the author of the new book the Feel Good Effect: Reclaim Your Wellness by Finding Small Shifts that Create Big Change. Robyn has a Master’s degree in education with an emphasis in behavior change, and 4 years of public policy & health change at the doctoral level, her work taps into cutting edge science around psychology, neuroscience, mindfulness, and habits.
    On today’s episode we’re discussing:

The dark side of the wellness industry
How perfectionism, all-or-nothing thinking, and comparison get in the way of feeling good, being happy and healthy
Why doing all-or-nothing protocols in the pursuit of physical health can lead to burnout and a drastic decrease in your mental and emotional health
What is chronic striving and why it’s so unhealthy
    * Why attaching your worth and value to productivity is so damaging

*Exciting Announcement**: Cristina Hoyt and I are launching a live round of our signature 4-week course, Break the Diet Cycle in January! The course is always available to do self-paced, but this time, we’re running it live and upping the ante with an additional Masterclass every week. If group programs aren’t for you and OR you know you’d like to have more personalized, individual support – we’re offering the option of doing a Break the Diet Cycle Intensive, where you get the course plus individual coaching calls and support from me and/or Cristina. This is also open to all of our previous course participants or anyone who has ever purchased the course before, so we’re looking forward to having a really fun and engaged group to give you all an alternative to the new year’s diet culture shitstorm ahead, giving you live support WHILE the craziness of January reset/detox/diet season is going on so you don’t feel so alone and don’t know what to do.
    Today we’re digging into:

“No excuses” quarantine rhetoric and the emphasis on productivity = value as a way to avoid hard emotions
The emotions underlying guilt around not taking all the classes, re-doing your house, and creating all the things in stay-at-home times
Masculine vs feminine energies and tendencies – how has this showed up in quarantine
The pressure we’re receiving from all sides to restart in 2021 to erase the hurt of 2020

  • Breathwork for stress, anxiety, and trauma healing with Jen Broyles
Jen Broyles is a Holistic health coach, breathwork therapist and founder of the Sacred Breath Community. In this episode you’ll learn more about the benefits of breathwork for stress, anxiety, and trauma healing, the different types of breathwork practices, and more of the physical, emotional, and mental benefits of doing this practice consistently. We’re also going to give you a super cool tool that you can use today, and at any time similar to a classic meditation practice, to help you drop into your body and help relieve some stress and tension.
Jen is taking you guys through a meditative, guided breathwork therapy session at the end of today’s interview so you can get all zenned out, drop into your body, and find some space and relief in your day today so you can experience a breathwork session for yourself! If you’re one of those people for whom you know meditation would be great for you because you’re constantly on the go and can’t slow your mind down (oh hey, that’s like me!) – which makes meditation really hard for you, I think you’ll love this breathwork session because it’s a lot more focused and guided than a traditional meditation, with less potential for distractions.
The first part of this episode is the interview with Jen, and then around 29:00 we go into the guided breathwork session with music.
    Hang out with Jen!

  • How thoughts about food can raise blood sugar {non-diet nutrition research study}
Non-diet nutrition & nutrition science myth busting alert! There is a new study that has come out about how our perception of certain foods can have a greater physiological impact on the body than the actual content of that food – meaning what we believe or assume to be true about certain foods can have a greater impact the body and the way your body metabolizes those foods rather than the objective nutritional makeup of those foods. The study is called Glucose metabolism responds to perceived sugar intake more than actual sugar intake – on today’s episode, Cristina Hoyt and I are breaking down exactly what the study is actually saying and why it matters.
This is exactly why working on your relationship with food is so important, and why we work on this so much with our Whole-Hearted Eating™ approach – because the HUGE amount of stress we carry around daily about food and our bodies can show up in our bloodwork, manifest in physical symptoms like GI issues, gas and bloating, hormonal imbalances, adrenal issues, thyroid issues, and the whole 9 yards. Meaning that working on our relationship with food and our bodies is *paramount* and *essential* to healing your physical, mental, and emotional health.
Read the study we discussed: Park, C., Pagnini, F. & Langer, E. Glucose metabolism responds to perceived sugar intake more than actual sugar intake. Sci Rep 10, 15633 (2020). https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-020-72501-w
