Brian discusses one of the most persistent blind spots in business ownership. Most entrepreneurs can explain what they do and how they do it without hesitation, but the moment someone asks why, the answer collapses into a mission statement that could belong to any company in the industry. In this episode Brian works through a deceptively simple exercise created by Simon Sinek, one that requires no offsite, no consultant, and no whiteboard. What it requires is one friend, one question, and the willingness to sit through a conversation that gets awkward before it gets valuable. Brian also discusses why the people closest to you already hold language for something you have never been able to write down, the single mistake that causes most people to abandon the conversation right before the breakthrough, and how the answer you get across a kitchen table maps directly onto the way your team and your clients experience your company. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. Brian discusses the courage to change your mind after you have already announced your decision. He opens with a seventeen year old family friend who quit football before his senior season, held that line through summer workouts, preseason, and the first two games, and then did something almost no adult ever does. He reversed himself and asked for his spot back in week four. Brian argues the reversal matters far more than the decision, and that most seasoned business leaders would never have made the same move, not because they were right but because their decision had quietly turned into an identity. He walks through three real business reversals, including Steve Jobs taking Microsoft's money in front of a booing Macworld crowd in 1997 and Nike walking back into the wholesale partners it had publicly walked out on. Brian also discusses how to tell courage apart from flip flopping. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. Brian borrows a model from political theory and puts it to work on management. Horseshoe theory says the ideological spectrum isn't a straight line but a bent one, where the two extremes curl toward each other and end up more alike than either is to the center. Brian spends a minute on the origin, is candid about why political scientists question the model, and then leaves politics behind for the part that actually matters to operators. Because the same pattern runs through business. Two founders with opposite management philosophies, each certain the other one has it backward, routinely produce the identical failure in their teams. Brian walks through five pairs where this happens, explains the single underlying mechanism that connects all of them, and gives a diagnostic you can run on your own strongest conviction. Brian also discusses why certainty itself is the warning sign. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. Brian breaks down two terms that get thrown around loosely and are worth understanding precisely: the straw man and the steel man. One of them is a trap most leaders fall into daily without any bad intent, usually because they're moving fast and their brain compresses what someone said into something simpler and easier to argue with. The other is a discipline that traces back to game theorist Anatol Rapoport and was put in front of a business audience by philosopher Daniel Dennett, and Charlie Munger had his own version of it. Brian walks through both with the same workplace conversation, showing how the exact same sentence from a team member produces two completely different meetings depending on which approach the leader takes. Brian also discusses a second, entirely legitimate meaning of straw man that shows up in consulting and engineering, and why it beats asking your team an open-ended question. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time. Brian makes the case that a leader is a teacher above all else, and that most of what a leader does has a hard ceiling of one person's capacity. Teaching is the only leadership activity that compounds. He also points out that you are teaching your team whether or not you intend to, and that the only real question is whether you are doing it on purpose. Brian looks at three entrepreneurs worth modeling on this, none of them the names you would expect, and what they built that most companies never do. Then he walks through the laws of learning, a framework that traces back to John Wooden, and applies all five to a situation most leaders will recognize immediately: a new salesperson, a set of scripts and methods, and thirty days to make them stick. Brian also discusses which of the five laws almost everyone abandons early. -- Get on the list to receive Brian's monthly newsletter: https://nodaysoff.com/subscribe/ Tune in to this podcast every weekday morning for 10 minutes or less as Brian shares lessons and stories about how to make positive changes in your life and business, one day at a time.
