  • 75: Jess' Real Story "I want to forgive my thighs for not meeting my mum's expectations"

Does your mum make you feel bad about your body? Does she comment on your weight or tell you how much to eat?

Your mum may never stop dieting. Or commenting on your weight.

This is a sad – but important thing to realise – your mother may never change.

Luckily, you can change how you respond to her comments – and see them for what they are, disordered eating and really crumby body image compounded over many years.

Unfortunately, this is a concept familiar to so many people – including today’s guest, Jess Robinson.

Jess is an award-winning British actor and celebrated voice artist. Yet behind the spotlight, she is battling with body image and diet culture.

I was so excited to chat with Jess because she doesn’t shy away from vulnerability. We rewind to her upbringing, where her mother's diet pursuits and comments lead to so many years pursuing an unattainable body.

I loved this chat, we chatted about shedding harmful narratives, embracing intuitive eating, and establishing strong boundaries to protect ourselves from other people’s comments.

But the best part of Jess’ Real Story – is how incredibly far she has already come. And I know her life will continue to be filled with those light-bulb moments.

Realising how GOOD life can actually be, without dieting.

Ps. If you adored Jess as much as I did - check her out on Instagram.

  • 73: Should I cut dairy or gluten for my skin? Dr Thivi busts skin myths (Part 2)

If you’ve clicked on this episode, chances are you’re interested in skin health. So, before you press play, make sure you listen to part 1 of this conversation, and then come back.

Welcome back, we are SO excited for more Dr Thivi deliciousness.

Did you know that 90% of dermatologists and dermatology nurses are asked questions about food and skin health, but only 10% feel confident answering them?

Dr Thivi discovered this in her clinical work as a dermatologist, so she decided it was time to go back to school. And for skin lovers, this is truly a match made in heaven. Dr Thivi Maruthappu is the UK’s first and only dual-qualified dermatologist and nutritionist who has developed the SkinFood approach for skin health. She has developed a holistic approach for taking care of our skin, minus any wellness wankery!

In this episode, Lyndi and Dr Thivi clarify the confusion around common diet trends and their impact on skin health.

The reality of disordered eating in wellness culture has seen restrictive eating patterns spike as people attempt to take charge of skin conditions like eczema, acne, psoriasis, and rosacea.

But what is the science telling us and how should we be eating?

From the infamous keto rash, the drawbacks of juice cleanses, how to supplement a vegan diet, maintaining hair health, menopause and even the potential issues of going gluten-free. The world of skin care is filled with diet myths.

Ps. If you've listened to the episode and want more information about the Rene Furterer hair tonic, we've got you.

  • 72: Thinking about Botox? Dr Thivi says nutrition should be the first step (Part 1)

Right now, our skin is like a superhero doing some incredible stuff.

It's a temperature controller and a pollution shield, plus it's our touchy-feely sidekick, letting us feel things like soft blankets and high-fives.

    But wait, there’s more...

If we hurt ourselves, our skin goes into action mode. It's like a magical repair shop, fixing cuts and scrapes and making itself all shiny and new again.

But like so many things, the way we think about our skin has been impacted by wellness wankery.

Even though our skin can do all these amazing things, people often only care about how it looks.

Dr Thivi Maruthappu is the UK’s first and only dual-qualified dermatologist and nutritionist who has developed the SkinFood approach for skin health. She has developed a holistic approach for taking care of our skin, minus any wellness wankery. Perfect for us!

Face lotions and serums have a role to play in our skin health, but what you put in your mouth really does show on the outside.

Enter Dr Thivi’s brilliant phrase… Berries before botox.

Dr Thivi and Lyndi chat about how our skin is a telltale of our physical and emotional health, communicating signs of stress, anxiety, and even nutrient deficiencies. Plus, the mind-skin connection, the importance of hydration and what supplements are worth our time (and more importantly our money).

Oh and of course. Get ready for a whole lot of evidence-based information around collagen and bone broth.

Lyndi is a long-time skin care enthusiast and had so many questions for Dr Thivi, so make sure you click the subscribe button so you don’t miss part two of this chat.

  • 71: The power of your period: How your cycle impacts cravings, weight, body image and so much more

At first, Lyndi said it felt weird to track her period everyday. But because of what she has learnt and how it has transformed her health, she would do it all over again.

You’re not imagining it, my friend.

    • Some days it’s easier to be confident or fall asleep or manage your cravings.
    • Some days are better than others for going shopping for clothes or taking a photo you like.
    • Some days are perfect for making plans while other days work out best when you make no plans at all.

She never felt this connected to her body.

Deciding to track her period, allowed Lyndi to start working with her period, not against it. And with this comes a truck load of new self-compassion and kindness.

It's so much easier to forgive yourself for not being perfect…for being moody, or for disliking your body or for wanting to eat the entire kitchen!

So if you're thinking, what would you learn about yourself if you tracked your cycle, too? Let's see what Lyndi found out and how you can get started.

  • 70: Sophia's Real Story "I'm scared to buy bread because I will binge eat"

Eating disorders can affect everyone, and in today's Real Story, we meet Sophia, who knows this all too well.

Sophia's journey towards recovery has been truly remarkable, starting from her use of food as a means of control during infancy, to being admitted to the hospital for not eating, and to collecting memories of passing comments about her food intake from family members. Despite suffering deeply from an eating disorder, she even faced rejection from an eating disorder clinic due to being at a healthy weight.

Navigating the rough road to recovery isn't easy, and Sophia has come such a long way from the depths of her eating disorder. However, her life can still be influenced by food rules, and she often faces the temptation to diet.

Do you know what's healthier than kale? A good relationship with food and your body.

This chat highlights the significant role of supportive relationships and the power of positive affirmations in breaking free from disordered eating.

Weight loss isn't the ultimate goal; it's about creating a healthier relationship with food. Lyndi debunks calorie myths and discusses the significance of adopting healthier habits over time rather than obsessing over immediate results.

  • 69: Do you feel OBSESSED with food? 5 tips to help you stop constantly thinking about food

Ever felt like your relentless thoughts about food are working against you rather than for you? Consider this your golden opportunity to shift that narrative.

Thinking about food when one is hungry or making cooking plans is completely normal. But thinking about food constantly? That may be a sign that something is up.

Understanding the reason behind your persistent thoughts about food is key to overcoming them. Keep in mind that foods differ in nutritional value, not moral value. Unfortunately, diet culture has led us to mistakenly attach moral judgments to certain foods.

And gee, does Lyndi understand that. At the age of 11, she was made to be scared of pasta, eating carrot noodles long before zoodles were even a thing. Lyndi started a food tracker, writing down everything she ate and obsessing over every mouthful. For over a decade, as long as she followed her regimen, she was fine. However, if she felt compelled to break her dieting rules, enter anxiety.

In today's episode, Lyndi shares her tips to shift your focus and stop obsessing over food.

    Resources this episode:

    • Are you an emotional or binge eater? Take the quiz
    • Intuitive Eating 101 & the hunger scale

  • 68: Demi's Real Story “I feel guilty if my child isn’t eating perfectly”

In this week’s Real Story, we meet Demi.  And we are SO glad to have met her.

Demi is currently raising her 15 month old son, all while recovering from an eating disorder that has controlled her life for over 15 years. Big stuff.

After years of battling bulimia, anorexia, and orthorexia, she decided to seek help to ensure a healthier narrative for little boy. But as many women can relate too, body image issues often intensify during pregnancy and unwanted comments can bring a constant reminder back to appearance and weight.

Challenging diet rules and trusting our bodies is another crucial part of the journey. And now it is time for Demi to make meals and food choices for her son. Lyndi helps  with ways to break down food rules without overwhelming the system too much.

Spoiler: One rule at a time.

Social media may paint a different picture, but feeding our kids is not a competition, but a journey of learning and teaching.

Raising children is hard enough. As parents let’s celebrate the small victories along the way.

  • 67: Christina's Real Story "I don't want my daughter to ever think about Weight Watchers"

Diets are often passed down from generation to generation, like an old tea set that nobody wants.

Meet Christina. She is throwing out the tea set. And that's why we are so excited to have  share her story.

She may not remember a time in her life where she wasn't on a diet, but Christina is a mother to her young daughter, and is working really hard to break free from the harmful effects of diet culture and food trauma.

Lyndi and Christina chat about the importance of how language is used around food, setting boundaries with family members and role modelling healthy habits.

Remember while your parents may have said or done things that impacted your relationship with food, you can still raise your children to have a healthy relationship with food.

If we redefine what it mean to be healthy and show that to our children, we can set them up for a lifetime of counting happy memories and never almonds.
