  • Mastering Mindset: A Deep Dive On Mental Toughness

It’s easy to look at top performers, elite athletes, and those crushing outrageous achievements—and conclude that their success boils down to sheer genetic luck, supreme talent, or unlimited resources.

While success can be significantly influenced by those variables, all things being equal, the difference between those who manifest their aspirations and those who hold themselves back comes down to one distinct element: you guessed it, mindset.

What are the consistent mindsets that allow high-performers to push the boundaries of their physical prowess? How do you create a positive mindset shift amidst a shitty situation? And how do you leverage mindset to achieve your goals?

Throughout the last nine years, I’ve compiled a powerful arsenal of potent, life-altering ideas, perspectives and tools on how to cultivate, embrace, and apply a new and more personally meaningful approach to life. Today I present you with our fourth master class installment, which is a compilation of 11 incredible and unique perspectives on mindset and habit change taken from previous conversations—think of it the crème de la crème of the best and brightest ideas on personal transformation ever shared on this show.

This deep dive anthology is chock full of big truths on fostering a mindset for success, leveraging gratitude to overcome obstacles, the importance of embracing pain, and why discomfort is the price of admission for a meaningful life.

Guests featured in this episode (all hyperlinked to their respective episodes) include:

    • Leah Goldstein
    • Dr. Andrew Huberman
    • Courtney Dauwalter
    • David Goggins

Masterclass Series: Click here to listen to our first deep dive on the microbiome, here for our second on mental health, and here for our third on addiction & recovery.

This is a powerful, and dare I say potentially life-changing gold mine of wisdom. My hope is that it serves as a guide on your journey towards fostering a mindset that will ultimately improve every aspect of your life, and gear you towards a more fulfilling, self-actualized way of moving through the world.

  • The Science of Creativity & How to Enhance Creative Innovation | Episode 103
In this episode, I explain how the brain engages in creative thinking and, based on that mechanistic understanding, the tools to improve one’s ability to think creatively and innovate in any area. I discuss how convergent and divergent thinking are essential for generating creative ideas and provide three types of meditation tools (open monitoring meditation, focused attention meditation & non-sleep deep rest; NSDR), which improve our ability to engage in these creative thinking patterns in specific and powerful ways. I also discuss how dopamine and mood contribute to the creative process and describe behavioral, nutritional and supplementation-based approaches for increasing dopamine to engage in creative thought and implementation. I explain how movement and storytelling (narrative) approaches can generate novel creative ideas and how substances like alcohol, cannabis, and psilocybin impact our creative ability. Excitingly, creativity is a skill that can be cultivated and enhanced; this episode outlines many tools to help anyone access creativity and apply creative patterns of thought to different domains of life.

  • 700: How Rob Dyrdek Fits Family, Real Estate, and $100M Businesses into His Day
Rob Dyrdek is one of the most well-known pro skaters, entrepreneurs, and media figures of all time. He essentially owned the MTV lineup for years with hit shows such as Rob & Big, Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Factory, and Ridiculousness. At first glance, Rob may look like a phenomenal skater who turned his passion into something profitable. But behind the half pipes is an almost unbelievable amount of discipline, wisdom, and time optimization that only a select few know about.
Rob, like many entrepreneurs, ditched school early on when he realized that his talents were best used elsewhere. He left high school at sixteen, went on to compete in the highest level of skateboarding, and started his first company at seventeen. He was bringing in millions of dollars a year at an age where money is almost incomprehensible. Rob was fueled by creation, starting dozens of businesses that were doing millions in revenue but weren’t making a financial difference in his life. So, he took a high-level view of what was worth keeping and cut out everything but that.
From then on Rob began investing down two major avenues—businesses and real estate. Most people who follow Rob know about the former, but very few know about the latter. Now, Rob’s on the show to help us celebrate the 700th episode of the BiggerPockets Real Estate Podcast and show us how we too can make millions of dollars by tracking every minute of our day as intelligently as possible.
    In This Episode We Cover:
Becoming an entrepreneur and Rob’s earliest business ventures
Why quantity over quality is key when building businesses and brands
Real estate syndications and why Rob will only touch a certain type of property
The “soul-sucking” landlord life and why it is NOT for everyone
Rob’s recession-proof plan that will make him millions even as investing fear peaks
Tracking your life and how doing so will make you richer and happier almost automatically
Building your financial framework and how so many doors open after you do so
    And So Much More!

  • #078 Resistance training for time efficiency, body composition, and maximum hypertrophy | Brad Schoenfeld, Ph.D.
Found My Fitness - Rhonda Patrick

    Podcast Notes Key Takeaways
    • “If I were to pick one activity that’s indispensable, it would be resistance training.” – Dr. Brad Schoenfeld
    • Aerobic exercise will improve the cardiovascular system but will do little to improve strength, muscle development, bone density, and muscle hypertrophy
    • Resistance training is an important supplement for reducing calories to lose weight – if you do not lift weights, you will lose muscle as you lose body fat
    • Adequate protein intake is essential for muscle synthesis and maintenance
    • Shoot for 1.6-1.8g/kg body weight if resistance training and a minimum 0.8g/kg body weight if sedentary
  • Combine different concepts and types of training: resistance training, power, cardio, plyometrics
  • When considering rest periods between sets, the ability to perform volume load is more important than optimizing hormones through rest length
  • It’s beneficial to give a muscle 48 hours to recover before training again – training sooner won’t blunt hypertrophy because some muscles may not respond well to high training frequency
  • You can lift lighter loads at higher volumes and still experience gains in muscle but intensity matters! The last few reps need to feel hard
  • Dosing resistance training:
    • To maximize hypertrophy: 10-20 sets per muscle, per week
    • Minimum effective dose to gain muscle: 4 sets per muscle, per week
  • The most important thing is to be in tune with your body – if you need a day off, take it

Dr. Brad Schoenfeld is a professor at Lehman College in the Bronx, in New York City. His research primarily focuses on muscle adaptations to strength training, muscle hypertrophy. Publishing over 300 studies in the field of exercise and sports nutrition as a scientist, Brad began his career as a competitive bodybuilder and personal trainer.

  • 20VC: Mailchimp's Ben Chestnut on The Biggest Leadership Lessons Scaling to a $12Bn Acquisition and $1BN+ ARR, The Secret to Happiness, Being a Great Husband and Father & Why 2021 was the Right Time To Sell to Intuit
    Twenty Minute VC

    Podcast Notes Key Takeaways
    • Mailchimp was kind of an accidental business; it was originally built for just a few customers who were struggling to send out email newsletters
    • The freemium pricing option teleported Mailchimp’s user base from tens of thousand to over a million users within a year of adding it
    • It is not always better to be faster
    • It’s okay to be stressed and have chaotic feelings on the inside, but a calm demeanor is important to convey as a leader
    • “The key to happiness is staying in your lane, and knowing when people need to be in their lane. Don’t get in their lane, and don’t let them get in your lane.” – Ben Chestnut
    • If you are a “hands-off” leader, ensure that you are also not an “eyes-off” leader
    • How you are perceived as a leader is often dependent on the setting in which you are leading
    • Founders tend to conflate their identity with that of their business; but with time, they realize that their life is not their business when they genuinely begin to reflect on their life
    • Ben is grateful for easing into new levels of wealth over the course of his life instead of having a one-time, shocking liquidity event
    • The happiest couples have husbands who keep their damn mouth shut
    • “What I want the most is to not want.” – Ben Chestnut

Read the full notes @ podcastnotes.org

Ben Chestnut is the Co-Founder of Mailchimp, the all-in-one marketing platform for small businesses. Last year, in Sept 2021 it was announced that Intuit would acquire Mailchimp for a reported $12BN. There are so many things to love about the Mailchimp journey to this point. First, Mailchimp was founded as the result of a side project of a design agency Ben and his co-founder, Dan, used to run. Second, Mailchimp is and has always been based in Atalanta, eschewing the notion you have to be in SF or NYC to build a massive business. Then third, they never raised venture funding for the business all the way until their $12BN acquisition. Ben led Mailchimp to over 1,200 employees and millions of global users.

In Today's Episode with Ben Chestnut We Discuss:
