  • AMA #3: Adaptogens, Fasting & Fertility, Bluetooth/EMF Risks, Cognitive Load Limits & More
Welcome to a sneak peek of the third Ask Me Anything (AMA) episode, part of Huberman Lab Premium.
The Huberman Lab Premium subscription was launched for two main reasons. First, it was launched in order to raise support for the standard Huberman Lab podcast channel — which will continue to come out every Monday at zero-cost. Second, it was launched as a means to raise funds for important scientific research. A significant portion of proceeds from the Huberman Lab Premium subscription will fund human research (not animal models) selected by Dr. Huberman, with a dollar-for-dollar match from the Tiny Foundation.

  • #298 The Root Cause Of Disease That Nobody’s Talking About With Dr Zach Bush

I believe that conversation matters; that long form nuanced conversation is what we need now more than ever, to make the world a better place. And for me, part of that means exposing ourselves to new ideas, new concepts and new ways of thinking that we may previously have not been exposed to. This week’s guest on my Feel Better Live More Podcast is someone who fits that bill perfectly.

Dr Zach Bush is a medical doctor and founder of the non-profit Farmer’s Footprint, created to find root cause solutions for human and ecological health. His passion for education reaches across many disciplines, including genomics, the immune system, and gut brain health.

Zach spent many years as a conventional doctor, specialising in internal medicine, endocrinology and hospice care. Disillusioned with the state of Western medicine, he began taking an integrative approach, studying the body’s microbiomes in relation to health, disease and food systems. Today though, Zach describes his life and work as ‘dedicated to the health of humanity and the planet we call home’.

In this conversation, Zach makes the case for a revolution in how we understand ourselves, our fellow humans, our healthcare and farming systems – and how we save the world. This episode is a rollercoaster ride through biology, physics, philosophy, economics and environmentalism – all sprinkled with a good dose of inspiration.

Zach and I share the view that healthcare needs radical change. It can no longer be about doctors telling patients what’s wrong and prescribing drugs and treatments that don’t look at the whole person.

We discuss how traits of ego, individualism and competition aren’t really human at all. And Zach explains how the realisation that all living beings are energetically connected and interdependent is the key to transformation – we cannot thrive as one species if we wipe out others.

We also talk about saving our soil and our food systems through regenerative agriculture, and encouraging individuals, farmers and big industry to work together to save the internal and external ecosystems that none of us could live without.

Yes, these are big topics. But ultimately, Zach’s message is one of hope. He’s not afraid to put forward big solutions, and they’re all made up of steps each one of us can start taking from today.

This is a really special conversation. It's honest, evocative and at times, provocative. I hope you enjoy listening.

  • Bad Moms with Emily Oster
When my wife Nellie was pregnant last year, we became obsessed with Economist Emily Oster’s book, Expecting Better: Why the Conventional Pregnancy Wisdom Is Wrong–and What You Really Need to Know. Amidst a barrage of conflicting and confusing pregnancy advice, Oster laid out the data on everything we needed to know. Despite what doctors said, sushi, cheese, and the occasional glass of wine were all okay during those nine long months. It gave us the much needed calm we needed during a time of so much uncertainty.
With her two subsequent books Cribsheet and The Family Firm, Oster popularized a new phenomenon that has defined our generation of parents: data-driven parenting. It ditches the long lists of paternalistic rules, and instead examines peer-reviewed evidence and lets parents make their own informed decisions about their kids based on risks and tradeoffs.
Nowhere was the Oster mentality more front and center, and more divisive, than during Covid. She argued very early on in the pandemic for less draconian and more nuanced policies. She wrote pieces in the Atlantic like, Schools Aren’t Superspreaders and Your Unvaccinated Kids Is Like A Vaccinated Grandma, when those words were considered heresy. And while she made quite a few enemies on the left over the last few years, recently she wrote Let’s Declare A Pandemic Amnesty, and earned herself some enemies on the right as well.
Today, my wife Nellie Bowles joins me to talk to Oster about why a Harvard-educated economist at Brown University decided to become a parenting guru, how she used her parenting framework to become a leading expert on pandemic policies, and the unwinnable position of… actually following the science.

  • Developing a Rationale Approach to Supplementation for Health & Performance
In this episode, I explain how to design a supplementation protocol to support maximum mental and physical health and performance depending on your specific needs, nutrition, lifestyle and finances. When most people hear about “supplements,” they think they are vitamin supplements, but there are many compounds that are powerful and sold over-the-counter that can enhance our health in performance and that can’t be obtained from foods. First, I discuss “foundational” supplements to support overall health, including water and fat-soluble vitamins, minerals, digestive enzymes, adaptogens, and prebiotics/probiotics. Then I explain how to use single-ingredient supplements to enhance specific aspects of your physiology, such as aiding sleep, cognitive enhancement, and focus supporting healthy hormone levels (e.g., testosterone, estrogen and growth hormone, thyroid). Finally, I explain when it makes sense to add supplements to your lifestyle and discuss how best to use supplements, including how to determine dosage, sourcing, continuous schedules and cycling, and how to layer different supplements most effectively. This episode will explain how to design the safest, most biologically effective, cost-effective supplementation protocol to meet your particular goals and support your overall health, including vitality and longevity.

  • John Mack on Life Lessons From Financial Crisis
    Masters in Business

    Podcast Notes Key Takeaways
    • “I’m a client guy. No one wants to drink alone. So if he’s drinking, or if she’s drinking, I’m drinking.” – John Mack
    • John came from a small predominantly Baptist town in North Carolina; the party scene of 1970s Wall Street was a culture shock for him
    • Lessons learned from the bond desk: be upfront, focus on your clients, and don’t get drunk at lunch (but occasionally do)
    • “At the end of the day, it’s all about trust. And it’s all about delivering on what you say you are going to do.” – John Mack on building business relationships
    • Globalization and technology changed Wall Street more than anything else
    • In the 1970s, Wall Street bankers would go out to lunch for hours and not miss anything; today, bankers can’t leave their desk
    • John Mack tried to create a “One Firm, Firm” culture that reduced information silos and encouraged collaboration
    • Anyone with a personal fiefdom is terrible for a firm trying to create a strong culture
    • Advice for college graduates interested in finance: get your foot in the door, figure out how to get to know people in the company that you want to work for, perform well in your current job, and get an accounting degree or an MBA if you want to be an M&A specialist
    • Hold onto the great companies that you invest in
