In this episode of the Preacher Boys Podcast, host Eric Skwarczynski sits down with Travis Chappell (host of the Travis Makes Money podcast) to dig into the financial side of high-control religious environments—specifically how sermons on tithing, offerings, and "giving by faith" can be used to manipulate and financially pressure congregants.
Eric and Travis break down real sermon clips from pastors preaching controversial and occasionally predatory theology on the topic, including telling people to pay their tithe before their bills, teaching homeless individuals to tithe 10% of their income, and to give so God keeps protecting their families... which sounds a bit like the Mafia, don't you think?

Today on the Preacher Boys Podcast, we're diving into one of the most under-discussed forms of church abuse: financial exploitation. From guilt-tripping congregants into tithing during the COVID-19 pandemic to shaming members with bizarre, homophobic rhetoric, this episode breaks down real sermon clips from prominent pastors and ministries who use weaponized biblical language to control their congregations' finances.
In this episode, we react to and unpack clips from:
— Josh McPherson's viral "tithe shaming" sermon
— Paul Chappell of Lancaster Baptist Church on tithing during COVID-19
— Jabin Chavez, a Las Vegas pastor with a surprisingly refreshing take on financial hardship
— Kenneth Copeland's fear-based prosperity gospel messaging during the pandemic
— Pastor Larry Smith and his "first fruits" tithing philosophy
— Bruce Goddard (featured in HBO Max's "Let Us Prey" documentary) and his complaints about members leaving during COVID and not tithing when they sold their homes
We explore how tithing, sacrificial giving, and "faithfulness" are often twisted into tools of manipulation — pressuring people already struggling to pay bills, feed their families, or survive a global pandemic into handing over money to the church.

CT Townsend's Arise Youth Conference just wrapped July 20–23, 2026 in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee — with thousands of teenagers and youth pastors gathered under the banner of "powerful worship" and "bold preaching."
But one guest speaker at the event is raising some serious questions.
That speaker is Jon Jenkins—the pastor who resigned from his church in 2019 amid controversy surrounding how he handled criminal sexual abuse cases involving his staff.

The congregation at Crossroads Baptist Church in Bailey’s Crossroads, Virginia, was told their pastor was absent because he was fighting “a spiritual, mental, and physical battle. What they weren’t told is that their pastor, Kenny Baldwin, was actively being investigated by state police about sending nude images of himself to a 15-year-old boy.
Here’s a quick timeline of the actual events behind Kenny Baldwin’s absence.
May 2, 2026 — The York Criminal Investigation Unit began investigating Pastor Kenny Baldwin for sending explicit images to a minor.
June 1, 2026 — Baldwin’s alleged victim told police that Baldwin had sent him two more explicit images of himself.
June 7, 2026 — A video sermon from Pastor Kenny Baldwin, titled “Strength in Weakness,” was streamed for the Sunday evening service at Crossroads Baptist Church. This would be Baldwin’s last sermon at CBC.
June 9, 2026 — Baldwin confessed to two individuals that he had sent nude images of himself to a minor.
June 12, 2026 — Pennsylvania State Police in York County interviewed Pastor Kenny Baldwin. He confessed to sending the images. When asked how old his victim was, Kenny said, "probably 15" and added that he could forget that the boy was that young because he acted "so much older."
June 21, 2026 — During a Sunday morning church service, Pastor Lou Baldwin explains Kenny Baldwin’s absence as being due to “mental, physical, and spiritual” battle, and the lingering effects of a prior COVID diagnosis. No mention of an investigation was made. It’s unclear whether the church leadership was aware of any investigation or Baldwin’s confession at this point, or whether they were simply parroting an excuse given to them by Pastor Kenny Baldwin.
July 20, 2026 — Court documents and criminal complaints were filed by the Pennsylvania State Police.
July 22, 2026: Baldwin was arraigned and released on $80,000 unsecured bail.
July 23, 2026 — CBS 21 reached out to Crossroads Baptist Church for a statement. They said they had “no comment.”
That timeline raises important questions—Did the Crossroads Baptist Church leadership know anything about the ongoing investigation into Pastor Kenny Baldwin before his arraignment? When Pastor Lou Baldwin addressed the church on June 21, 2026, was he aware of Kenny Baldwin’s interview with and confession to law enforcement nine days earlier?
There are a few possibilities, and none would be particularly comfortable for the congregation to come to terms with.

Pawleys Island Community Church in Georgetown County, South Carolina is facing a $25 million lawsuit and criminal charges after parents discovered a registered sex offender had been volunteering on campus—including at the church's affiliated Christian school—for years.
In this episode, I break down:
— How congregants first learned that Warren Perry, convicted in 2023 of sexual exploitation of a minor, had been given access to children
— The explosive, tearful congregational meeting where members confronted Senior Pastor Don Williams
— The resignations of Pastor Don Williams, his wife Ginny Williams, school director Nikki Howard, and several elders
— The details of the $25 million lawsuit filed by a John and Jane Doe on behalf of their children
— A troubling history of a similar allegation against the church from nearly 20 years ago
🚨 BREAKING — At a July 20th, 2026 press conference, Georgetown County Sheriff Carter Weaver revealed investigators concluded that Don Williams, Ginny Williams, Niki Howard, and Warren Perry all colluded to knowingly and willfully place children in harm's way. Criminal charges have now been filed against all four:
Donald James Williams — Obstruction of Justice, Unlawful Neglect/Endangerment of a Child, Criminal Conspiracy
Jenny Lee Williams — Criminal Conspiracy, Obstruction of Justice
Jennifer Nicole Howard — Obstruction of Justice, Criminal Conspiracy, Unlawful Neglect/Endangerment of a Child
Warren Spencer Perry — Obstruction of Justice, Criminal Conspiracy
Sheriff Weaver also played taped audio of Williams being interviewed about Perry's supervision violations, and released photos allegedly showing Perry in close proximity to children on campus—directly contradicting the church's public claims.
