When adversity strikes in the form of a difficult situation or some bad news, how do you handle it? And, more importantly, how can you deal with it better than the way you’ve dealt with it in the past?

Here are five big ideas on managing and leveraging adversity:

1. Have confidence. Real, genuine, authentic confidence simply refers to a belief in your ability to figure things out. Acknowledge that the situation is difficult, but that you will survive and overcome it. Rather than getting sucked into negativity or sadness, remember that you’ve figured things out in the past that were equally as difficult or even harder. This point is both basic and fundamental when successfully managing adversity.
2. Keep perspective. Out of 7 billion people and thousands of collected years of recorded human history, none of us are facing a particular adversity that’s completely unique. Keep perspective by acknowledging that other people have gone through what you’re going through. Remember that there’s only two stories in humanity’s narrative: struggle and progress. Also, keep perspective by recalling the times in which you faced adversity, summoned strength and overcome it.
3. Schedule action. There are only two things that have the potential to change your life: either something new comes in externally, or something new emerges from within. Rather than waiting and hoping for things to get better, or taking sporadic and inconsistent action, make sure to schedule actions to deal with the issue. Even if the actions are simple, and especially when the issue is difficult, schedule actions each day to handle it.
4. Ask for help. As soon as adversity strikes, ask for help. Asking for help can take the form of approaching your spouse, partner, business colleagues or a professional in the fields of medicine, therapy or psychology. Openly communicating, whether it entails talking about the issue and possible solutions, or listening to other people talk about how they’ve dealt with a similar issue, can truly serve you. Remember: you’re not alone. You’ve been through stuff before, and so have other people.
5. Honor the struggle. Honoring the struggle is a critical element and mindset to sustaining success in life. Accept the fact that we can’t change or influence everything, but we can change and influence our attitude and our actions each day. We can move forward by facing the issue and accepting the adversity as a necessary component in our overall growth.

Negative people will always be around, so here’s some ideas to help you deal with them:

1. Use their energy. Use this experience as a personal challenge to stay centered and remain in charge of your own energetic and emotional levels. Let negativity be a cue to breathe and challenge yourself. Isn't this an empowering thought? Rather than allowing someone’s negativity to reduce you to the victim role let it remind you that you are in command of your thoughts and emotions.

2. Empathize. We really don’t know someone’s entire story. Isn't it true that we all have bad days? Don't you get negative once in a while? If so, then instead of getting mad or fighting, seek to understand what someone is facing or going through. That’s how we tap into our own humanity and compassion, and those thing become a flood of good energy that washes away the negativity. Compassion wins.

3. Shift it. Instead of pointing out someone’s negative energy, you can use tools like humor, appreciation and playfulness to shift the energy. Take it as another challenge to introduce positivity to the scene. Not only will this skill help the person you're dealing with, it’ll also help you develop your leadership skills and your capacity to start movements.

4. Enroll them. Instead of blaming or labeling "negative" people in hopes of making them change, you can simply make a direct request. Ask that they bring more awareness to their energy in order to improve your relationship and time together. Invite them to take power and responsibility over the direction and positivity of your relationship.

To be able to reach high performance, you have to master these four areas of your life:

1. Psychology. You have to gain control over your thoughts, emotions and behavior so that you can stay motivated, positive, resilient, and empathetic.
2. Physiology. We all know that we should closely manage our sleep, workouts, nutrition and health. But few people consistently care for their well-being, which is why so many people drop off or plateau? This must become a priority in your life if you wish to succeed long term (and enjoy the journey!).
3. Productivity. There's a science to setting goals, prioritizing and scheduling blocks of time. If you lack this knowledge or the ability to get things done and to be effective in what you’re doing, then you're toast. Always remember that the main thing is to make the main thing the main thing. Do what really matters and you'll be in the zone.
4. Persuasion. Have you ever been taught exactly how to get people to believe in you, listen to you, follow you, buy from you, support you? Unfortunately, few have.  And they don't prioritize learning this topic even though it's one of life's most important skills. Look, you can't always face your challenges on your own. You have to have the people skills so that you move to the next level where your family, peers and followers support your dreams.
