  • When Your Outlook Just SUCKS!

Our outlook on life determines how we face challenges. Right now, we are all facing this pandemic. Some people are pessimistic while others are really optimistic. You can choose to do something you’ve always wanted now with this time. Even when the challenges seem big, with businesses closing and sheltering in place, there is much to be optimistic about.

Whereas a pessimist may hide behind the fact that they are being realistic about a situation, sometimes they are just quick to see the problem while an optimist is quick to see the possibilities. It doesn’t mean they are out of touch with reality. Science has proven that optimists have better health, better relationships, and avoid/come out of depression quicker than pessimists.

There are three things that make you a pessimist. Thinking that the challenge you are facing is:

    • permanent
    • pervasive
    • personal

Permanent means seeing difficulties will always be there. Pervasive means that the problem is everywhere and personal means that you view it as solely your fault.

    Key Takeaways

    • Why you need a strong sense of optimism to persevere through challenges in life (02:39)
    • Are optimists out of touch with reality? (12:04)
    • Pessimists see the problem, optimists see the opportunities through the difficulties (13:12)
    • The three things that make you a pessimist (15:47)
    • How your outlook of life affects your health as you grow older (28:57)
    • Optimists are always willing to learn new skills (36:42)
    • Human beings are born innately optimistic. Pessimism is a learned trait. (39:35)
    • Changing from a pessimistic frame to being more optimistic for your health (49:53)

  • When To QUIT And When To REST

After the mother’s day craziness that we talked about in the last episode, I feel like I have been struggling and wanted to take some time off. The feeling of being burnt out is a common feeling that many of us go through, especially mothers.

Relationships, jobs, business, parenting are all things that can stress us out. You take a break, maybe go on vacation, you come back feeling rejuvenated and refreshed but after a while you start getting the same burnout feeling again. Understanding your trigger points is crucial. In my case, aborting my routine is one of my trigger points. Having excessive business and excessive ideas is another one of my trigger points.

Finding an outlet to recharge is important. Otherwise, you’ll get overworked and soon suffer burnout and lose motivation to work. Understanding what makes you happy and conversely what steals your joy and depletes your energy is key to avoiding burnout. However, you should never quit just because you are tired.

    Key Takeaways

    • You cant always be in a state of motivation and drive (02:39)
    • Understanding the trigger points that make you feel like giving up (04:32)
    • Why sticking to a routine helps you avoid overworking and burnouts (12:19)
    • Finding an outlet to recharge to avoid becoming obsesses with one thing (14:20)
    • Asking yourself questions to identify your trigger points (22:38)
    • What things rob your joy and deplete your energy? (23:50)
    • You should not quit because you got tired (29:38)
    • Changing your aspirational values as you grow and wanting different things in life (35:59)

  • Stuck? Move Your ASS!

We begin this episode by sharing how I have felt overwhelmed with everything that has been happening. Going from selling the bakery and getting three offers to everyone pulling off after COVID hit, to closing down the business and laying off the team.

Then I got this spark and thought I was not just in the bakery business but in the celebration business and I am going to meet my customers where they are at. I was going to save Easter. People have to celebrate in the midst of chaos. Because of meeting my customers where they are, the business has been very successful in the past 30 days.

Letting go and moving forward is very important for business owners and people in general. Letting go gives space for new ideas and new life. Once you get those great ideas, you have to implement them it doesn’t matter how great an idea is, you have to show and execute it. You have to move you ass. Have no expectation of failure or success so that even if one idea fails, you pay little attention to it and move on quickly.

Listen in to learn how you can get out of where you are stuck and move your ass!

    Key Takeaways

    • Figuring out how to meet your customers where they are at and fulfill a need (06:57)
    • Throwing ideas and having zero attachment whether they fail or succeed (09:07)
    • Letting go to create space for new ideas and new life (11:49)
    • Using the situation you are in to learn new things about your business (17:55)
    • Moving aside your fears and implementing the ideas you have (24:41)
    • Paying little attention to your failures and setbacks and moving on quickly (30:42)
    • Giving no meaning to your setback and failures (37:51)
    • Focusing on the big wins and ignoring the small losses (38:42)
    • Understanding the struggles that small businesses are going through right now and being considerate about your requests (41:48)

  • Eddie's 40th Birthday

In this episode, Eddie and I will be joined by our daughters Jasmine, Jordan, and Kayla to celebrate Eddie’s 40th birthday. We’ll talk about Jasmine’s love for ASMR and how she wants to start a YouTube channel around it, and dive into the little things that Eddie does that makes him seem older than he really is, like using words that people don’t use anymore and so much more. We will have a fun and emotional conversation where everyone will talk about how they feel about Eddie, their opinions of him, and just how good of a father and husband he is.

We’re also going to talk a lot about perspective and how it determines where someone ends up in life. A great example has been my shift in perspective about money. Having grown up in a family that didn’t have much, I’ve always thought that it would be fair to distribute all the money in the world equally amongst the entire global population to give everyone a fair chance at making it big in life, but over time I have realized that even if that was to happen, all the money would still end up with the rich because they know how to make it. That has really shifted my perspective on money and now I've learned how to make it, respect it, and give it. I also value teaching the girls about the same, so they can always be empowered.

Eddie will talk about his perspective change being more about empathy, mindfulness, and doing things differently in life. He always reminds himself that life can end at any moment so that he can be grateful and happy for every second he has on earth. That certainly makes him a joy to be around, and we’ll all talk about the goofy and funny things he’s always doing around the house that just crack us up. We're very blessed to have him as the patriarch of our family and it was so awesome to be able to share this episode with you. Hope you enjoy it.

    Key Points Discussed:

    • Jasmine’s fascination with ASMR eating and Eddie’s so-called trendsetting ways (03:11)
    • Eddie’s biggest learning in the forty years he’s been on earth (08:42)
    • Learning about the distribution of money and why there is a divide between the rich and poor (12:36)
    • The giant fire in the middle of the house that Eddie has caused (14:46)
    • The great things the kids love about their dad (23:41)
    • The girls’ high level of maturity because Janelle and Eddie did not baby them while they grew up (26:21)
    • Hosting the 40th quarantine birthday party at Cake Mamas (29:16)
    • Thinking about mortality and having a death reminder on his phone (32:57)

  • Are You STUCK or PUSHING THROUGH?

In this episode, Eddie and I will welcome two of our star students onto the show to share how they have been able to thrive during this pandemic. We will also discuss four different categories of people right now that we have observed based on how they’re dealing with the crisis the pandemic has unleashed into their lives. The first category are the people who feel stuck and paralyzed because they don’t know what to do, so they’re just moving in whatever direction the Coronavirus wind blows. The next category of people are just hoping and praying that things get back to normal as soon as possible, so they can get on with their lives as they were used to. These are the most frustrated group of people because things keep getting worse by the day with no end in sight.

The third group of people are pivoting by accepting how things are changing and looking at things in a positive manner for their own good, while the fourth group are innovating to change everything in whatever space they’re in. The mother and daughter duo, Andrea and Briana, who we’ll have on are business owners with Andrea being a bakery owner and Briana being the owner of a coffee business that’s based inside her mom’s bakery. The two will talk about where they have been in the different categories we’ve highlighted above, and share their individual experiences with how they’ve dealt with the effects of the Coronavirus pandemic on both their personal and business lives.

When businesses started closing shop, Andrea and Briana’s bakery included, Briana was worried because she had so much milk and fresh coffee that she had just ordered and didn’t know what to do with. So she came up with a very innovative idea to sell her coffee through no-contact porch deliveries, and she was planning on selling the coffee by the litre which was unheard of, but when she actually tried it, she sold out within two hours. Andrea and Briana’s story will be such an inspiration for pushing on during this time no matter what we face, so stay tuned for more.

    Key Points Discussed:

    • The people who are most frustrated by the Coronavirus pandemic (02:55)
    • The importance of thinking about how we're doing business today (08:33)
    • Selling coffee by the litre and selling out (10:25)
    • Adopting a let's see what happens attitude of just shipping something and earning $5,000 from it within two hours (13:39)
    • Pushing on even when things are not going as planned (17:53)
    • Hustling hard to keep delivering their products to people during this time (21:22)
    • The cost of success and the lessons they learned through the pain (23:36)
    • How the Coronavirus pandemic sped up Briana’s business growth by two years (30:22)
    • Finding a way to be of service with a gift, talent, or skill and leveraging the resources around us (34:12)

  • What In The WORLD!? - The New Normal

In this episode, Eddie and I will do a “What in the World?” similar to one that we did back in February to just to talk about what’s going on right now with the Coronavirus, being sheltered to keep ourselves safe, and the way everything in life as we know it is changing to the point where people are now talking about the new normal. What in the world is Eddie’s go-to phrase when things get uncomfortable, awkward, or just strange, and we’re going to start off with what he’s been experiencing with the whole staying at home/quarantine thing that everybody is doing to keep themselves from getting infected with the Coronavirus.

Eddie’s biggest issue is not knowing how not to contaminate himself especially when we have to leave the house to go get groceries. We will have our masks and gloves on but when he gets to a point where he has to maybe press a pay button or touch anything, and he doesn’t have his gloves on for whatever reason, he worries that he may have contaminated himself. He experiences the same thing at home and at the bakery where even though he wipes down everything he comes across, he still worries when he touches something that he thinks someone else had touched.

My what in the world is mostly based on how businesses are doing business right now. Some of the larger businesses, especially the ones that deal in essential goods are really pissing me off. Sysco, for example, is where I mostly get my food and other essentials from, and I recently learned that they had increased their minimum to about $1,700 and also have some really ridiculous requirements that they’re imposing on their customers. I had a really challenging time buying from them and that should just not be happening during this time. Instead of making things easier for their customers, they’re making them harder and more expensive. Smaller businesses are doing a great job with enabling their customers to stay safer at home by making it easier for them to buy what they need. Eddie and I will discuss what our family and friends are going through and dive into how the pandemic is changing people’s characters and habits for the better. Stay tuned as we also share what you should do to create some normalcy at home and adapt to the drastic changes that are taking place.

    Key Points Discussed:

    • Our weirdo magnet family and Eddie’s what in the world experiences (02:08)
    • Getting Corona on his finger tip and everywhere else (03:20)
    • Trying to be safe but having a hard time at it with all the paranoia (08:41)
    • The ridiculousness of businesses that don’t have online payment options for customers (12:22)
    • How the companies that raise their level of customer service during this time of crisis will be remembered (16:28)
    • The struggles and vulnerabilities that seniors are going through (17:48)
    • The selflessness that the Coronavirus pandemic has inspired in people and how well we’re adapting (21:33)
    • Planning your days and weeks to create some normalcy at home (25:58)
    • Developing something new that you can continue with after the pandemic (31:32)
    • A great time to save money and work on our finances (33:16)

  • From Problem To Progress

In this episode, Eddie and I will talk about how to take your problems and turn them into productive progress so that by the time the whole Coronavirus pandemic blows over, you’re going to be a better person because of it. Some people are looking at the pandemic and being positive about it despite the fact that they may be headed towards financial ruin while others are adopting a more doom and gloom view of it all. That perception that someone chooses to hold is very important because it will determine whether they will come out of the difficult times we are in stronger or weaker.

When the 2008 global financial crisis hit, Eddie and I lost our jobs and we were faced with so much uncertainty about our future, but we didn’t stand in it, and instead chose to take action by making sure we were ready to vacate our house in case the mortgage company came calling because we couldn’t make our payments. We even went a step further and told our kids in advance that we were going to lose our jobs and not be able to afford our house anymore, so they could be prepared mentally for a move. And that’s pretty much always been our perception of difficult times, because we understand that even though we can't control a situation, we can still do something to be proactive.

I’d like to challenge you to take a piece of paper and make a list of people that you know and the different situations they are in right now, and that will help you see just how tough things really are for people, so you can get to a point of accepting your situation, being positive, and having the faith to face things head on. Stay tuned as we lead with the challenge and talk about a couple of our friends and the challenges they’re going through, and tell you the 10 questions that we think will help you improve your perception so that at the end of this episode you will have the courage to shift your perspective on this pandemic and push yourself towards ensuring that you come out of it a winner in as many respects as possible.

    Key Points Discussed:

    • Having the sense of empathy to understand the hardships others might be going through (02:22)
    • Putting in the deeds and finding ways to be resourceful (04:08)
    • The great challenges a lot of people are having with the effects of the Coronavirus pandemic (09:50)
    • Being innovative and looking at the silver lining (12:06)
    • Becoming a magician candle maker and transforming the toilet (15:43)
    • The ten questions you must ask yourself to shift your perception (18:50)
    • Playing your part through acceptance and overcoming the future problems the Coronavirus might cause in advance (27:08)
    • Your most undervalued resource is your network (32:43)
    • Figuring out the one step you could take to begin to move forward (37:38)
    • Making the best out of the difficult situation we are in (39:19)

  • Stop Being So JUDGMENTAL! How Your Opinions Of Others Is Blocking You From Blessings!

In this episode, Eddie and I will have a conversation about being judgmental, how our opinions of others sometimes block us from blessings, and how judgments can narrow a person’s world completely, so much so that they end up always missing out on some very interesting and fantastic people. To give you a clear picture of what that is all about, I’ll share a story about my sister and her husband. They met in the neighborhood where we grew up, and back then, my brother-in-law was this little thug gangster that I had a very low opinion of. I couldn’t tell my sister to stop seeing him, so I figured I should just wait for her to outgrow him, but that never happened, and long story short, they stuck together through the years until they eventually got married.

My brother-in-law is now one of the best things that’s ever happened to our family. He’s a great dad and husband, and he just brings so much joy and laughter into our family. With all our judgement of him, he totally proved us all wrong. That’s how we as human beings tend to be judgmental of one another. We all have some sort of point system that we use to gauge others based on how they look, talk, or walk. And deep inside, we feel like we have the authority to make judgement about others and condemn them to our views of them.

But that has been proven to cause way more harm than good on a judgmental individual, because a lot of the times where we judge others, we lose out on opportunities to meet great people who can positively impact our lives in diverse ways, and even lose out on opportunities that can change our present and future lives. Eddie and I will share our personal experiences with being judgmental, and how avoiding it has been so beneficial to us, so you can really see just how powerful not being judgmental can be in pushing you towards great possibilities, blessings and achievements in life. Stay tuned for more.

  • How To Get Your SHIFT Together! With Anthony Trucks

In this episode, we’ll welcome Anthony Trucks, a serial entrepreneur, author, speaker, shift coach, and former-NFL player. Anthony is a sought after expert in helping people know their identity and navigate life’s shifts, good and bad, with grace and optimism, so they can develop into who they want to be. We heard him speak at an event, and we were so moved that we just had to have him on the show because we feel he is the perfect pusher to introduce to the PUSH community.

Anthony has overcome some of the worst circumstances you could ever imagine. He started out in foster care at the age of three along with three of his siblings where they endured beatings, starvation and some of the most imaginable things that children could ever go through. At the age of eight, he was adopted by an all white family (and he’s African American, so you can imagine the challenge here), but he still managed to persevere to achieve an amazing dream worthy career (The NFL), and start a family of his own.

Somewhere down the line things weren’t going so well, and he lost his career and marriage. To make matters worse, he also lost his adoptive parents and was left with his identity completely shattered. He’s going to share his amazing story of resilience, tenacity, and drive, and teach us how we can “Make Shift Happen” in our lives, so we can achieve happiness, success, and fulfillment..

    Key Points Discussed:

    • Learning how to overcome adversity and going for our dreams no matter what (05:56)
    • Common failure, version failure, and predicted failure, and the harm in making them abject (07:12)
    • Avoiding the emotional space of opportunistic joy by not talking aspiration (13:25)
    • How we create either a strong or weak mindset, and having the confidence to show up for ourselves (16:42)
    • Getting to a point where success is your second nature (22:20)
    • Showing people the bridge to cross to the other side of the river (25:09)
    • The importance of giving ourselves permission to do better (27:21)
    • Overcoming an identity crisis to become the man that he is today (31:52)
    • The reactive identity shift we are having to face as a society right now (39:42)
    • Going through a huge reset, so we can have great ideas once the Coronavirus situation is done (45:27)
