Disposable coffee cups have become a huge problem for the environment. But one Ireland-based company thinks it has a solution.
Disposable coffee cups are made of paper, but they have a plastic lining to allow them to hold liquid. This lining means they can't be recycled easily, and most are not recycled at all.
ButterflyCup has made what it says is the world's first 100% plastic-free, completely recyclable coffee cup.
The cup, which is also called ButterflyCup, uses a water-based lining to allow it to hold drinks without the use of plastic. The company says that the cup can be recycled just like normal paper, and if the cup gets into the environment as litter, it will biodegrade naturally. The top can also be folded down to cover the cup, so there's no need for a plastic lid.
The company says that the ButterflyCup has already been used in 20 countries around the world.
In the UK, the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust, which has nature reserves across the country, started using the cups in its visitor centers in December 2020. ButterflyCup also said that it is talking to major coffee shops about using the cup in their stores.
According to a 2017 study by the UK government, almost half of all hot drinks in the country were sold in disposable cups. The report said that by 2025, the UK could be using about 3.75 billion cups each year. At the time of the report, fewer than 1 in 400 disposable cups was being recycled.

Have you ever wanted a job where you get paid to do nothing? A Japanese man is renting himself out to do just that 一 and thousands of people are paying for his services.
Shoji Morimoto, 37, from Tokyo, has been offering himself as someone who will "eat, drink and give very simple responses, but do nothing more," since June 2018. He has received over 3,000 requests since then.
Morimoto started renting himself for free when he couldn't find a new job. He had left his job because he found it difficult to fit in, and his boss told him that it didn't matter if he was there or not.
Morimoto now charges 10,000 yen, or almost $100, for each request, and said he sees three or four clients per day. Those who rent him must also pay the cost of his meals, plus travel from Kokubunji station in western Tokyo.
His business idea was inspired by another person who did nothing but receive meals. Morimoto decided to start a Twitter account for his services, and now has over 260,000 followers. He has also published several books about his service and inspired a television show.
He told The Mainichi that he doesn't act as a friend, but can still help people feel less lonely. Customers have said that just having someone with them can provide support.
One customer said having Morimoto beside them helped them visit the hospital when they had been putting off going. Another said she had rented him to be with her when meeting men for the first time, and to listen to things she couldn't tell her friends.

People in Amsterdam aren't complaining about the recent cold temperatures in the city. In fact, many are hoping it gets even colder so that the canals freeze over. The city has even banned boats on some parts of the canals to give the water a better chance of freezing over.
In other parts of the Netherlands, people are already ice skating on frozen lakes and rivers. And companies that sharpen ice skates said they have had a huge increase in business.
Ice skating is a national winter pastime in the Netherlands. People of all ages wait for cold temperatures that will allow them to skate on the country's many waterways.
And each time it gets cold enough, there's also a chance that the country will hold its 11 Cities Tour, a 200-kilometer ice skating race over frozen canals, rivers and lakes that goes through 11 cities in the north of the country.
The organization that runs the 11 Cities Tour said in January that the race — which could include over a million spectators and 25,000 participants — would not be possible with the COVID-19 rules, however. The last time the race took place was in 1997.
Prime Minister Mark Rutte said having an event with a large audience is not possible, even if it is outdoors.
Still, Rutte said the Dutch should make the most of the cold temperatures while they last. "Enjoy this beautiful weather and the ice," he said. "But do that within the COVID-19 rules."

The photo of Bernie Sanders in his brown coat and wool mittens at the presidential inauguration has inspired hundreds of memes, but it has also helped raise $1.8 million for charity.
The money came from the sale of items with the original photo on them. According to Sanders, he put the first products, including T-shirts and sweatshirts, on his website January 21 and they sold out in less than 30 minutes. More products were added over the next few days and quickly sold out too, he said.
"[My wife] and I were amazed by all the creativity shown by so many people over the last week," said Sanders. He said he's happy he can use the popular meme to help people in Vermont.
The money from Sanders' products will be used to help several organizations in Vermont. But the photo has also helped raise money outside of Sanders' website.
Tobey King, who lives in Corpus Christi, Texas, made a crochet doll of Sanders sitting in his coat and mittens and was able to sell it online for more than $20,000. She said she will give the money to Meals on Wheels America.
Sanders' mittens were made by Jen Ellis, a Vermont elementary school teacher who also makes mittens out of recycled wool and sells them. Ellis said on social media that Sanders called to tell her that her mittens had helped raise a huge amount of money.

Like mukbang eating videos, gongbang videos began as a South Korean trend but now have fans all around the world.
The word gongbang comes from the Korean for "study broadcast": gongbu bangsong. The videos show people studying for anywhere between a few minutes and 12 hours. They're also called "Study with Me" videos and some have several million views.
 
A search on YouTube shows a mix of gongbang videos of Youtubers studying at home or in public places like libraries. Many videos include a timer, and use the Pomodoro technique of studying for set times with breaks. Some also have music.
 
Some of the videos have thousands of comments, such as "this is the first time I’ve studied for 3 hours" and "it's nice to study with a buddy."
 
Popular Korean "Study with Me" Youtuber, Kim Dong-min, told Vice, "Because of the coronavirus, most people around the world are studying alone at home. I think my video tells them that [they] are not alone."

Kim has over 52,000 YouTube subscribers and his most popular video has been watched over 380,000 times. A video from June 2020 shows Kim studying for over an hour. He doesn't speak, and all you can hear are the sounds of his pen, paper and other people studying in the room.
 
Along with international fans, there are also international "Study with Me" Youtubers. In the UK, university student Ruby Granger makes study videos of herself studying, as well as videos about how to stay motivated. She has 567,000 subscribers.

Michelle Obama is making a food show for children with a pair of puppets that will be released on Netflix.
The new show, called Waffles + Mochi, will be released March 16, and will be "all about good food: discovering it, cooking it, and of course, eating it," the former first lady wrote on Instagram.
The show will tell the story of two puppets who want to become chefs and travel the world looking for ingredients and meals to make. It also will include real people, including famous chefs, home cooks, kids and celebrities, while Obama will play a supermarket owner.
"Kids will love it," Obama wrote. But she said that adults will find it funny, too, and they may even get some useful advice.
"I wish a program like this had been around when my girls were young," she said.
Obama said the show is similar to her work with "Let's Move," a public health campaign she led as first lady. Its goal was to reduce obesity in children by helping families eat healthier food and exercise more.
The show is made by Higher Ground Productions, a company owned by Obama and her husband, former President Barack Obama. In 2018, the Obamas signed a deal with Netflix to make shows and documentaries. Michelle Obama released her Netflix documentary Becoming in May 2020.
The former first lady also has a podcast called The Michelle Obama Podcast on Spotify.

Airbnb is having a competition for couples to win a night in "Juliet's House" on Valentine's Day in Verona, Italy.
The couple that wins will get a meal from a two Michelin star chef and a tour of the city with a photographer. They can also sleep in the bed used in Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 movie, Romeo and Juliet.
 
To win, couples must write a letter, in English, explaining their love story and why they would be the perfect guests for the house. The letter must be received by February 2.
 
According to Tourism Verona, "Juliet's House" is visited by over a million people each year. While Juliet was not a real person, the house has a balcony like the one where Romeo and Juliet are often shown saying they love each other.
 
There's a statue of Juliet outside the house that is said to bring luck in love when touched. And the walls outside the house are covered in love letters left by tourists.
Every year, thousands of letters are also sent to "Juliet, Verona," which are answered by local volunteers from the "Juliet Club." The winners of the Airbnb competition will get a chance to read and respond to some of the letters.
 
William Shakespeare lived from 1564 to 1616, and Romeo and Juliet was probably written around 1595. Despite it being the setting for Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare never visited the city of Verona.

William Shakespeare is probably the best known English writer in the world. But how much do you know about him?
Shakespeare was born in 1564 in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon. The writer's exact birthday is not known, but it is usually celebrated on April 23. He also died on April 23 in 1616, when he was 52. The house that Shakespeare was born in is now a museum.
Shakespeare wrote at least 37 plays and over 150 poems. Some of his best known plays were first seen at the Globe Theatre in London. A new Globe was built in 1997, where people can enjoy Shakespeare's plays as they would have when he was alive — with a large part of the audience standing in front of the stage with no roof over them!
A 2016 survey found that 51% of British people had read or seen Romeo and Juliet, making it his most popular play.
Shakespeare also wrote 10 plays named after English kings. Even though they were fiction, they have affected how people today think of the real people in them. For example, many people think King Richard III was an evil man because of what Shakespeare wrote about him — but experts now say he might not have been so bad!
But Shakespeare's biggest impact was on language. His works provide the first recorded usage of around 1,700 words — almost 10% of all the words he used in his plays and poems. Shakespeare came up with some of them himself, while others are nouns that he changed into verbs, or words to which he added a prefix, for example.

A study has found that couples who met using dating apps like Tinder want serious relationships.
Dating apps have completely changed how people meet, and new research by Dr. Gina Potarca from the University of Geneva in Switzerland disagrees with the popular idea that people only use them to look for casual relationships.
Using a 2018 national survey, Potarca studied 3,235 adults in relationships who had met their partner in the past 10 years. She wanted to know if couples who met using dating apps had plans to start families, how happy they were and what types of people were meeting online.
The study actually found that most couples in Switzerland still met through friends — although the number of people meeting on the internet was increasing, with a quarter of relationships that started in the past two years having started online.
The study found that couples who met online and offline were equally happy with their relationships. However, couples that met through apps were more likely to want to live together. The study also found that women who met their partners through an app were more likely to want to have children in the near future.

Video games have been used to test the thinking and movement skills of animals such as monkeys, apes, pigeons and rats for a long time. But now, researchers have also taught pigs how to play a simple video game.
In research conducted at Pennsylvania State University, four pigs learned to use a joystick to move a white circle from the center of a screen to hit a "wall" at the top, bottom or side of the screen.
If the pigs were able to move the circle to the wall, they were given food as a reward.
The game was easy at first, with walls on all four sides of the screen. However, as the pigs got better at moving the circle, the game got harder, with fewer walls to hit: first three, then two, then one, then smaller and smaller parts of one wall.
If the pigs failed, the game got easier again.
On the one-wall test, all four pigs got results that were "above chance," the researchers wrote. They said this means the pigs — who were named Hamlet, Omelet, Ebony and Ivory — at least partly understood the game and were flexible in their behavior.
Some of the pigs were much better at playing the game than others. For example, when there was just one wall, Ebony could hit it only 34% of the time, while Ivory could hit it 76% of the time.
The joysticks were difficult for the pigs to use, however. The researchers say that any future study on pigs should try using a touch screen instead.
