  • A Day at the Zoo
Every single day, about three times a day, we all eat food. From the super sweet snacks to the richly spiced soups - we’ve gathered together countless times with friends and family to share our companionship and our meals. Whether it’s a hot barbeque or cold ice cream, food has this magical quality to motivate our minds and warm our hearts. Today, we’ll share savory stories from Laura Pershin Raynor, Kevin Carr, Joseph Bruchac, and Doug Elliot.
On today’s episode, enjoy the following:
    Radio Family Journal: Book Fair
Daily Mix: Rachel Wadham discusses “Scary Stories For Young Foxes”
Story Spotlight: “A Day At The Zoo” Laura Pershin Raynor(10:32)
Storytime: “Bill Greenfield’s Breakfast” by Joseph Bruchac(6:25)
“Bake that Chicken Pie” by Doug Elliot (4:07)
“Sweet Tooth” by Kevin Carr (12:05)
    Storyteller Spotlight: Laura Pershin-Raynor
“As a child, I was a story sponge whenever family gathered. All it took was a “tish mit menschem”, a table with people, for the stories to fly. My Grandma Dinah, who lived to be 105 years old, raised me on the tales of the Old Country, providing me with a landscape for my own stories.  As a fourth generation storyteller from a family filled with wacky characters, I have been telling tales of secret messages, delicious recipes gone wrong and outrageous tricksters, for the past thirty years.  I’ve had the honor of performing as a Teller in Residence at the International Storytelling Center , and I’ve been featured at the Celebration of Light Festival in TX, the Timpanogos Festival in UT and the Mariposa Festival in CA, to name a few.”

  • BITES **** -- "My Wife Hates Baseball" by Don White with guest Jeff Simpson
From time to time, we'll post what we call a BITE ("like a regular episode, only shorter!"). We always hope that the stories you listen to on The Apple Seed will spark memories and thoughts that you can share with the ones you love -- perhaps even the people with whom you listen to the show. In a BITE, we'll listen to a single story -- one that we love -- and invite friends to share memories and thoughts that occur to them as they listen to it.

Do you love something that your family hates? On today's BITE, Don White shares the story, "My Wife Hates Baseball" about the struggle Don has with his wife over his favorite sport. Sam is joined in the studio by Jeff Simpson.

  • Another Evening With Antonio Sacre
Every once in awhile, we get to have a favorite storyteller right here in our cozy studio, performing before a live audience. Such was the case when The Apple Seed was paid a visit by Antonio Sacre. The Apple Seed audience will recognize Antonio's terrific, bilingual stories about growing up the son of Cuban and Irish ancestors. In addition to Antonio's stories, you'll hear music from Sam (along with bassist Ian Camp and pianist Anthony Phan), and an introduction to Agatha Christie's Tommy and Tuppence (just a taste of their many adventures together) read for you by Suzanne Christensen, Noah and Leah Kershisnik, and Sam. It's a special live, in-studio episode of the show.

  • Dancing Spirit
Dancing is a tradition that spans beyond cultures and generations. It has been used in worship, in celebration, as a way of self-expression and just for pure fun. Thus, stories of dancing have been passed down through generations. Whether it’s being told of through a Czechoslovakian folk tale, a humorous story of family, or a poem about a father and daughter, dancing brings societies and people alike together. It is speculated that people have been dancing for over nine thousand years, and it continues to be an integral part of society. Dancing is something that reaches people across oceans and time, and continues to show us that in the end, we are all a bit more similar than we are different. Even if we have different traditions and language, at our core, we are all the same.
On today’s episode, enjoy the following:
    Radio Family Journal: Earth Shoes
Daily Mix: “Mark Wait” discusses “Turn to Stone”
Story Spotlight: “Dancing Spirit of the Birch” by Diane Edgecomb in In the Groves (10:45)
    Storytime:
“Elaina’s Birthday Dance” by Shelia Arnold in Hands Wide Open (19:14)
“Belle of the Ball” by Waddie Mitchell in Sweat Equity (3:05)
