  • BITES **** -- "The Golden Key" by The Storycrafters with guest Rachel Wadham
From time to time, we'll post what we call a BITE ("like a regular episode, only shorter!"). We always hope that the stories you listen to on The Apple Seed will spark memories and thoughts that you can share with the ones you love -- perhaps even the people with whom you listen to the show. In a BITE, we'll listen to a single story -- one that we love -- and invite friends to share memories and thoughts that occur to them as they listen to it.
Have you ever had a thought you couldn't get rid of? In the story "The Golden Key" by The Storycrafters, a young girl ignores her duties to satisfy her series of curious thoughts. Sam is joined in the studio by Rachel Wadham.

  • The Horrible Shoes of Abu Kasseim
Perhaps the best time to sit as a family and share stories is in the evening (and not just because that's when The Apple Seed airs). Perhaps the best enviornment in which to enjoy those stories is a warm living room. Hearing the crackling of wood as it burns in the fireplace and feeling the flames' warmth is enough to pique anyone's interest in stories. And today on The Apple Seed you'll hear stories containing a giant, an unfortunate pair of shoes, and even a little wisdom.

On today’s episode, enjoy the following:
    Radio Family Journal: Chuters
Daily Mix: Jenna Parker discusses “Macs a la Mode”
Story Spotlight: “Abiyoyo” by Beth Horner on An Evening at Cedar Creek (13:01)
Storytime: “The Horrible Shoes of Abu Kasseim” by “by Bob Reiser on An Evening With Grandpa (20:34)”
“Evening Chat” by “Waddie Mitchell” on Sweat Equity (2:48)

  • How Ananzi Received Stories
Some of the first stories ever told come from mythology or folklore. These stories are thousands of years old yet we still love to hear about them, either in their traditional atmosphere or perhaps as a funky remix of itself. But no matter how you like to hear these stories, they give us something more than just a good time - they give us a connection the past and to all the storytellers who came before us, thus linking us into the beautifully long chain of mythology lovers. Here to share some of that connection to the past are stories told by Simon Brooks, Susan Strauss, and Leeny Del Seamonds.
On today’s episode, enjoy the following:
    Radio Family Journal: Motorcycle
Daily Mix: Don Shelline discusses the song “Three Times a Lady”
Story Spotlight: “How Ananzi Received Stories” by Simon Brooks on Second-Hand Tales  (13:26)
Storytime: “Creation of North America” by Susan Strauss on Wolf Stories (13:51)

“El Pajaro Cu del Perú” by Leeny Del Seamonds on Ay Caramba! Ay Ay Ay! (10:42)

  • Robin Hood
Robin Hood’s historicity is a complex mess of conflicting scholarly material—as it turns out, both Robert and Hood were very common medieval names. But whether the name “Robin Hood” belonged to a real person or was simply a stock alias used by thieves, the legend of Robin Hood paints a rather clear picture: a benevolent archer-turned-robber, aided by merry men, who takes from the rich and gives to the poor. The basic elements stay the same, but the name jumps from culture to culture, costume to costume, outlaw to outlaw. Sometimes he’s a cowboy in the American west, others he’s a wild-man from deep within the forest, but always he’s aiding the downtrodden. Join us as we listen to a variety of Robin Hood tales from across the world!

On today’s episode, enjoy the following:
    Radio Family Journal: Moving Elephants
Daily Mix: Gene Nelson discusses “New Kid”
Story Spotlight: “Iron John and the Little Drummer Boy” by Willy Claflin (as Maynard Moose) (10:05)
    Storytime:
“Old Cap Moore” by John McCutcheon (1:53)
“Sam Bass, the Texas Robin Hood” by Donna Ingham (4:48)
“The Death of Robin Hood” by Dan Keding (4:11)
“Robin Hood” by Castle Valley Acting Company (8:38)

“Pretty Boy Floyd” by John McCutcheon (2:52)
