  • Dancing Spirit
Dancing is a tradition that spans beyond cultures and generations. It has been used in worship, in celebration, as a way of self-expression and just for pure fun. Thus, stories of dancing have been passed down through generations. Whether it’s being told of through a Czechoslovakian folk tale, a humorous story of family, or a poem about a father and daughter, dancing brings societies and people alike together. It is speculated that people have been dancing for over nine thousand years, and it continues to be an integral part of society. Dancing is something that reaches people across oceans and time, and continues to show us that in the end, we are all a bit more similar than we are different. Even if we have different traditions and language, at our core, we are all the same.
On today’s episode, enjoy the following:
    Radio Family Journal: Earth Shoes
Daily Mix: “Mark Wait” discusses “Turn to Stone”

  • Hershel Tales
Sometimes tricksters can be cruel and other times they represent the unfortunate effects of luck or fate, but Hershel of Ostropol (now modern Ukraine) is a bit different. Often called Hershele (Her-shuh-luh), this Jewish trickster is very much a satirical trickster. He’s deeply spiritual, but also pokes fun at the establishment of religion. He’s poor and humble, but also willing to stand up to forces larger than himself. His tools are humor and pointed wisdom, and he doesn’t care if he’s in Rabbi Boruch’s (Bore-oosh) court or on his deathbed—he’s always going to tell a joke. Join us as we listen to a variety of stories about one of the Apple Seed team’s favorite tricksters.
On today’s episode, enjoy the following:
    Radio Family Journal: Ghost Restaurant
Daily Mix: Paul Ricks discusses “The Arrival”
Story Spotlight: “My Father and Hershel of Ostropol” by Joel ben Izzy on Buried Treasures (10:50)
    Storytime:
Selection from “Nasruddin Stories” by Roger Jenkins (14:37)
“The Nursing Home” by Joel ben Izzy on Buried Treasures (6:08)
“One Last Hershel Tale” by Joel ben Izzy on Buried Treasures (3:39)

  • BITES **** -- "The Moose and the Cheese" by Willy Claflin with guest Gene Nelson
From time to time, we'll post what we call a BITE ("like a regular episode, only shorter!"). We always hope that the stories you listen to on The Apple Seed will spark memories and thoughts that you can share with the ones you love -- perhaps even the people with whom you listen to the show. In a BITE, we'll listen to a single story -- one that we love -- and invite friends to share memories and thoughts that occur to them as they listen to it.

What's your favorite food? On today's BITE,  a moose must find a way to get more cheese after he has eaten all of his own in a story called"The Moose and the Cheese" by Willy Claflin. Sam is joined in the studio by Gene Nelson.

  • Tougher than Stone
“Accidents happen” is a time old phrase passed around from generation to generation, to try and help people through bad situations. True, accidents happen --and often there is no one to really blame for the consequences-- but consequences arise nonetheless. Whether someone is trying to work past an old fear or has to go through months of rehab and physical therapy, there is always more strength in one person’s courage and determination than there is in any problem. Often through these experiences people are able to find hope and faith beyond what they might’ve without the experience. Yes, “accidents happen” and that will always be a hard truth, but often in life it is less about the accident, and more about how you handle and learn from it.
On today’s episode, enjoy the following:
    Radio Family Journal: Sailing
Daily Mix: Rod Gustafson discusses “Shadowlands”
Story Spotlight: “The Bicycle Story” by Donna Ingham on Waiting for Roy & other Family Tales (11:57)
    Storytime:
“Accident” by Kevin Kling on Wonderlure! (5:42)
“Chris’ Accident” by Shelia Starks Phillips on Family, Friends, and Other Fun Folks (9:40)
“Broken Glass” by Lani Peterson on Stories Within (8:05)
