  • Recycled Poetry
In 1818, the English Romantic poet John Keats wrote that “poetry should strike the reader as a wording of his own highest thoughts, and appear almost a remembrance.” Perhaps this is why our storytellers reference poetry so often. Both mediums tell more than just events and feelings. They tell, teach, and sing something universal. Something so core to humanity that the listener thinks it came right out of their own mind. Today we’ll be bringing you a collection of stories that revolve around poetry and its effects on our lives. Join us as we listen to Finn Bille, Mitchell G. Capel, and Lani Peterson as they tell tales and even perform a few pieces of poetry from the likes of Maya Angelou and Paul Laurence Dunbar.
On today’s episode, enjoy the following:
    Radio Family Journal: Scooby Doo
Daily Mix: Steven Kapp Perry discusses "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"
“Maya’s Story for Indira” by Lani Peterson (11:07)
“Recycled Poetry” by Finn Bille (15:32)
“Goin’ Back” by Mitchell G. Capel (6:34)

  • This Turtle Island
North America has a rich history of storytelling and folklore from people who tilled the earth and made connections with animals before any European settlements. Native Americans used their insight and connection with the natural world to build a better understanding of the universe and the world at large- using origin stories and legends as explanations of how the earth was formed and shaped, and why things are the way they are. North America, “this turtle island” is the home to a vast and exciting history of the Native American people, and prove that legends and stories can spark something deep in us that help us connect to each other and ourselves better.

On today’s episode, enjoy the following:
    Radio Family Journal: Shelline Party
Daily Mix: Gene Nelson discusses “The Cat in the Hat”

  • BITES **** -- "Willie the Bug-Man" by Susan Klein with guest Jeff Simpson
From time to time, we'll post what we call a BITE ("like a regular episode, only shorter!"). We always hope that the stories you listen to on The Apple Seed will spark memories and thoughts that you can share with the ones you love -- perhaps even the people with whom you listen to the show. In a BITE, we'll listen to a single story -- one that we love -- and invite friends to share memories and thoughts that occur to them as they listen to it.

Growing up, your young mind soaks up all sorts of information like a sponge. And there's a sense of wonder and awe surrounding how things work, what purpose they serve, and in the case of today's BITE, how things change. Today's story, "Willie the Bug-Man" is from Susan Klein. Sam is joined in the studio by Producer, Jeff Simpson.

A common moral of many stories is "Don't believe everything you hear." And that's certainly at the heart of today's BITE. It's from a story called "Handsome Bear" by Donna Washington. Sam is joined in the studio by Paul Ricks, a Professor of Teacher Education at Brigham Young University.
