  • TWR 073: What It's Like to Work with Me (Interview with Dayna Watkins)

    In this episode, Amber welcomes one of her own clients! Dayna Watkins signed up for one of Amber's programs and is now pursuing her goals in a whole new way, without struggling with scarcity, super restrictive diets, and anxious thoughts around fitness and food. You already know that lifestyle changes are really what makes the difference for weight loss, right? Here you will find a genuine testimony of this idea.

    Restrictive diets can be the initial point for more serious problems such as eating disorders and we do not want that. We want to approach our eating habits in a sustainable and sane way, without the need of measuring anything, weighing anything, or counting calories. Dayna is living proof that a coach has the ability to hold you accountable when things seem hard, and accountability is everything.

    Dayna shares with us more about her story: the difficulties around diets; the permanent restrictiveness about what she could eat and what she couldn't; the daily moments of binging; and how she decided to change for good by applying for one of Amber's programs. Dayna also shares that investing with Amber was the turning point in her journey and that she was finally able to drop all the dieting. Tune in!

  • TWR 071: The Power of Permission: How to Make a Lifestyle Shift

    The idea of The Power of Permission will completely transform your relationship with food, set you on the path to healing that relationship, and experience the freedom you may have not thought was possible. When we have a past with chronic dieting, the internal dialogue that we have with ourselves in regards to food can be really painful, and full of shame and guilt. The real key here is to make a mindset shift, actually give yourself permission, and trust yourself to make the choice of what you want to eat. Listen to your body and your cravings, and realize that you are in control of what you put into your body. This might sound counterproductive to weight loss, but the mindset shift that happens here is truly magical.

    It's science: When we tell ourselves we can't have something, we want it more! By giving yourself permission to listen to what your body is craving, you will be surprised at your choices to satisfy those cravings. In this episode, Amber explains exactly how you can take back your power and make a true lifestyle change that will completely transform how you view food and cravings. We're not about restriction and being miserable here on The Wellness Revolution podcast. It's time to experience freedom surrounding your food and feel good about the choices you are making to nourish your body.

    Tune in to know more!

    Wellness Quote

    • "This one mindset shift of giving yourself permission, it really can be the very first step into that effortless and sustainable lifestyle that I know so many of you listening are absolutely craving for." – Amber Shaw

    Key Highlights

    • Amber explains this concept of The Power of Permission, a.k.a. the importance of giving ourselves permission to enjoy life and enjoy some type of food or snack that we're craving;
    • This requires practice and a lot of self-talk but it's important to start every time we are presented with an opportunity;
    • Amber explains that it's also important to trust ourselves to make smart choices and be conscious of the quantity and quality of the food we're about to go for.

Melissa also tells us a little bit about the constant shifts that she had in her adult journey, going from one career to another, and explains that sometimes we should embrace all the possibilities and drop the idea that there's just one purpose for us in this life.

    Wellness Quote

    • Your 'true calling' in life might be just one of many that you will find along the way. Being passionate about our work sometimes means having multiple passions;

  • TWR 069: Start Taking Radical Ownership of Your Life Now

    Are there things that you allow in your life just to get validation from others? This is a question worth asking before listening to today's episode. In this episode of The Wellness Revolution, Amber talks about this concept of taking 'radical ownership' of your choices, your actions, and, therefore, your reality. The things we let present in our routines and daily life will define whom we will become, even if it seems like they won't.

    Avoiding our own wants and needs, not paying attention to our own health, and not prioritizing ourselves on a daily basis are the main factors to get unsatisfied with our lives. Amber explains that in order to change that, we first need to be aware of it and then ask why. Why do we put our names at the bottom of our to-do list? When it comes to fitness/health, the whole idea becomes even more important, right? Tune in!

    Wellness Quote

    • "When we hear things that we don't like, it can be very easy to shut down and come up with excuses and move on and ignore and all the things. But that's not where the growth happens." – Amber Shaw

    Key Highlights

    • Amber explains how fundamental it is to take ownership of our lives, meaning, start doing right now the things that will bring us the result we desire;
    • Not prioritizing ourselves is the reason for a lot of disruptive feelings, such as a lack of self-worth and self-confidence;
    • There are many things that we allow in our lives just to get validation from others. We should first become aware of those things, ask why do we keep them around, and then make an effort to change;

In this episode of The Wellness Revolution, Amber welcomes Laurie Lewis, who is a specialist in intermittent fasting, living proof of the benefits of this eating modality, and a coach for several clients seeking the same evergreen changes.

    Laurie explains that intermittent fasting is not a type of diet and should not be considered as such. It's simply a tool in the toolbox that makes it possible for anyone with this dream – yes, dream! – of eating all kinds of delicious foods without the guilt From a nutrition standpoint, intermittent fasting ends up reducing the amount of calories consumed in a day by adjusting the 'time window' for meals. Tune in!

    Wellness Quote

    • "It's exhilarating to watch how fasting stirs people towards those 'healthier' choices naturally." – Laurie Lewis

    Key Highlights

    • Laurie tells the listeners a little bit more about her story ever since she started to ask questions about her own nutrition and whether the way she was eating was in fact 'healthy' or not;
    • Laurie explains some of the first benefits that she felt experimenting with intermittent fasting, some of the benefits that her clients feel, and how long it took for her to start feeling good again;
    • What does it mean to fast in a 'clean' way, the do's and don'ts of fasting 'clean', and examples of foods and liquids allowed with this approach;
    • Laurie advises all the listeners to try and see what works best for them. None of the tools we can use to take better care of our health are a magic pill and we may have to experiment;
    • What if someone who wants to try intermittent fasting is already undereating? Amber and Laurie give us different points of view on this topic.

  • TWR 067: Easy Tools to Manage Anxiety

    Join this episode of The Wellness Revolution as Amber gives you easy and simple tools to help you cope with and manage anxiety. At some point in our lives, we all experience different moments of stress and fear, or that super weird sensation of being afraid of something for no apparent reason. Anxiety can be defined as having fear about the future, and that's why it's so important to focus on the 'here and now'.

    One important component of alleviating anxiety symptoms is learning to identify where the anxiety and fear are coming from. Once you are able to visualize the source of such fear and stress, you can then become familiar with it and start to ease into the situation. Amber highlights that although it's very difficult to remember to do all these things when we are in the middle of an anxiety episode, it's important to practice so we can learn to live in peace with it. Tune in!

    Wellness Quote

    • "I like to take a minute and try and pinpoint where exactly is this anxiety coming from. Because when everything is crashing down – so it feels, internally – and everything seems so stressful, I know rationally that's not really what's going on with me." – Amber Shaw

  • TWR 065: How Does Alcohol Affect Weight Loss?

    Join this episode of The Wellness Revolution as Amber talks about the effects of alcohol in the body and its impact on weight loss overall. Alcohol itself has a great amount of empty calories, meaning it has no nutritional value, no micronutrients and no macronutrients, which means that all of the calories consumed from the alcoholic drink end up having no benefits to your body and to your health.

    Does alcohol affect weight loss? Yes, it does, but maybe not due to the reasons you think. Drinking alcohol at a party or social event for example can lead to overeating, which can cause an increase in the caloric intake. Anyone that has had a few too many drinks also knows that hangovers are not amazing, and this lethargic feeling can also lead to overeating and 'snacking' all day. Alcohol also affects gut health and many other factors that, directly or indirectly, influence weight loss. Tune in!

    Wellness Quote

    • "I do put alcohol in a similar bucket as indulging, meaning I can't sugarcoat this. If you have alcohol, more than probably a couple of times a week, is it going to impede your ability to lose weight? Abso-freakin-lutely." – Amber Shaw

    Key Highlights

    • Alcohol is made of empty calories, meaning that if you believe food is medicine and fuel to your health and overall wellbeing, alcohol has no value at all;
    • Too much alcohol can increase the chances of different diseases, the main one being liver disease;
    • Having drinks during a social event or during a party can also lead to overeating, "snacking" all the time, and eating more than we actually need;
    • Alcohol causes hangover, which can make you feel lethargic, with no energy to exercise for example, and in a "hungry" mood the next day;
    • Alcohol also has a huge influence over our gut health and, depending on your age, this should be a focus of attention.
