Poor sleep can lead to everything from mood swings to blood sugar and hormonal imbalances, weight gain, poor memory, and much more.

Acne is the number-one skin condition in the United States, affecting not just millions of teenagers but an increasing number of adults under the guise of hormones. Typically, the first thing we reach for to deal with acne is a lotion, potion, or cream to apply to the skin—and conventional medicine doctors frequently prescribe birth-control pills. However, these approaches do not target the root cause of acne.
In this episode of my Masterclass series, I am interviewed by my good friend and podcast host, Dhru Purohit, about the biggest triggers of acne, why we all react differently, and the top nutrients for skin health. We also discuss some frequently asked questions from our community about acne during puberty and more.
Dhru Purohit is a podcast host, serial entrepreneur, and investor in the health and wellness industry. We are in a climate crisis. Although we might feel helpless and hopeless at times about this crisis, we actually have the ability to contribute to the reversal of global warming. It starts with our food choices and using our dollar to support companies that have plans to do their part and sequester carbon. In today’s episode, I talk with Paul Hawken, David Wallace-Wells, Jared Blumenfeld, and Tom Newmark about the urgency of taking action to stabilize the earth’s climate.
Paul Hawken is an environmentalist, entrepreneur, author, and activist who has dedicated his life to environmental sustainability and changing the relationship between business and the environment. He is one of the environmental movement’s leading voices, and a pioneering architect of corporate reform with respect to ecological practices. Paul is Executive Director of Project Drawdown, a nonprofit organization dedicated to researching when and how global warming can be reversed. He is on a mission to present real, already existing solutions to reverse global warming.
David Wallace-Wells is Deputy Editor of New York Magazine and the author of the international bestseller The Uninhabitable Earth: Life After Warming, published in February 2019, which the New York Times called both "brilliant" and "the most terrifying book I have ever read." While the real truth about climate change can be scary, it’s a more important conversation than ever. Throughout our talk, David shares the history of climate change and the three major issues at hand: speed, scope, and severity.
Jared Blumenfeld is California’s Secretary for Environmental Protection. Appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom in January, he is one of America’s most innovative environmental leaders, with more than 25 years of environmental policy and management experience at the local, national, and international levels.
Tom Newmark is the co-owner of Finca Luna Nueva Lodge, an organic and biodynamic farm and ecolodge in the mountainous rainforest of Costa Rica that teaches regenerative agriculture. Tom is the cofounder and board chair of The Carbon Underground, cofounder of the Soil Carbon Initiative, and a founding member of the Regenerative Agriculture Initiative of California State University, Chico.

When we think about optimizing health, we need to think about redesigning life in a way that supports a healthspan that matches our lifespan. But sadly, most of us know more about our cars or iPhones than we do about our bodies. One of the greatest downfalls of that is that many people don’t trust our bodies’ natural ability to heal. Today, I’m so excited to talk to an old friend and pioneer of integrative medicine whose work has guided my path as a doctor, Dr. Andrew Weil. We take a deep dive into the body’s innate healing capacity and how food is our greatest ally to support that process.
Dr. Andrew Weil is a world-renowned leader and pioneer in the field of integrative medicine. Combining a Harvard education and a lifetime of practicing natural and preventive medicine, he is the founder and director of the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona, where he is a clinical professor of medicine and professor of public health. A New York Times bestselling author, Dr. Weil is the author of 15 books on health and wellbeing, including Mind Over Meds: Know When Drugs Are Necessary, When Alternatives Are Better, and When to Let Your Body Heal on Its Own; Fast Food, Good Food; True Food: Seasonal, Sustainable, Simple, Pure; Spontaneous Happiness; Healthy Aging; and Eight Weeks to Optimum Health. He is the editorial director of DrWeil.com, the leading online resource for healthy living based on the philosophy of integrative medicine. He is also a founder and partner in the growing family of True Food Kitchen restaurants.

Our food supply is dramatically less nutrient rich than it has ever been, and it’s taking a toll on our health. A shocking 99 percent of Americans are nutrient deficient, including over 90 percent who are deficient in omega 3 fats and 50 percent who are deficient in magnesium.
In this episode of my Masterclass series, I am interviewed by my good friend and podcast host, Dhru Purohit, about the top supplements for longevity, especially NAD, which inhibits inflammation, increases metabolism, and increases insulin sensitivity. We also discuss how to critically evaluate supplement research and much more.

The foundation we set for our children’s health in childhood—starting even before conception—will carry them throughout their lives. Yet a third of all American children are overweight or obese, and we are seeing an increase in type 2 diabetes in children.
In today’s episode, I talk with Dr. Elizabeth Boham, Sam Kass, and Dr. Tracy Shafizadeh about the urgency of prioritizing and establishing good nutrition habits in infancy, in the home as the child grows, and in school.
Dr. Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices Functional Medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing.
After cooking for the Obamas in Chicago for two years, Sam Kass joined the White House kitchen staff in 2009. During his White House tenure, he took on several additional roles, including Executive Director of First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!” campaign and Senior White House Policy Advisor for Nutrition. As one of the First Lady’s longest-serving advisors, he helped Mrs. Obama create the first major vegetable garden at the White House since Eleanor Roosevelt’s victory garden. Currently, Sam is a partner at Acre Venture Partners. Acre is a venture-capital fund investing in the future of food with a mission to improve human and environmental health in the food system. The fund focuses on early-stage, highly disruptive impactful companies in the food system focused on agriculture, the supply chain, and the consumer. Sam is also the author of Eat a Little Better: Great Flavor, Good Health, Better World.
Dr. Tracy Shafizadeh is leading the work in understanding the infant microbiome. She is a nutritional scientist who helps new and expectant moms learn about creating healthy gut bugs in their babies. She translates her extensive scientific knowledge of breastmilk and the gut microbiome into practical terms to help parents understand how a balanced gut from infancy can lead to a healthy immune system and metabolism for life. Dr. Shafizadeh received her PhD in nutritional biology from the University of California, Davis, and spends her free time "loving the guts" out of her two boys.

Humans have coevolved with food and its medicinal actions on our bodies, meaning we have actual cell receptors for specific food-derived molecules. So why aren’t doctors trained in how to use food as medicine? We’re taught all about using pharmaceuticals to affect our biology, but the power of food is left high and dry. I think this is a foundational area of medical training we need to change. That’s why I’m so excited to talk to one of my favorite people and thinkers in the world of food and medicine on this episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, Dr. William Li.
Dr. William Li is a world-renowned physician, scientist, speaker, and author of Eat to Beat Disease: The New Science of How Your Body Can Heal Itself. He is best known for leading the Angiogenesis Foundation. His groundbreaking work has impacted more than 70 diseases including cancer, diabetes, blindness, heart disease, and obesity. His TED Talk, Can We Eat to Starve Cancer? has garnered more than 11 million views, and he has appeared on The Dr. Oz Show, Martha Stewart Live, CNN, MSNBC, NPR, Voice of America, and has presented at the Vatican’s Unite to Cure conference. An author of over 100 scientific publications in leading journals such as Science, The New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, and more, Dr. Li has served on the faculties of Harvard, Tufts, and Dartmouth Medical School.

The number-one reason people visit the doctor is problems with the gut. Not only do gut issues impair gut function, making life miserable, but they also are a contributing factor to many serious conditions such as cancer, heart disease, autoimmune disease, diabetes, and more.
In this episode of my Masterclass series, I am interviewed by my good friend and podcast host, Dhru Purohit, about the three biggest contributing factors to compromised gut health. We discuss the importance of looking at gut function, the top foods that typically cause gut problems, and the top substances that support healing the gut.
