The truth is, if your team is not doing well, it's the coach's fault. That means you, boss!

And no, I'm not saying every single thing is your fault as the leader of your business, but I want to outline 3 ways you might be contributing to the frustration—and how you can fix it!

First, you might not be setting clear expectations. Be sure to define what a good job means for each position. Use measurable goals and benchmarks to evaluate performance.

Secondly, your communication might be too vague. With any team, it's critical to communicate effectively. You'll need ongoing conversations about vision, expectations, and goals. Two-way feedback is super important, providing both praise and constructive criticism. Be sure you're fostering fostering open lines of communication, free from intimidation, obstacles, and vagueness. Show your employees support and they'll reciprocate!

And third: If you're like many leaders, you sanction incompetence. That means you allow underperforming team members to remain without realizing just how large the impact is on the business and rest of the team. Address incompetence for the sake of the team's success.

Building a business is a cycle. You don't "arrive." You will see explosive growth and might think you've arrived, but that is followed resetting the vision and a new season of growth like you haven't seen, impact like you haven't seen, and revenue like you haven't seen. It's critical to embrace this cycle—don't stop!
 
When you're in the building phase, going from doctor to business owner, you are learning and developing skills in marketing, selling, operations, finances, and more. The effort and challenges may feel immense during the initial building phase.

In this episode of The EntreMD Podcast, we're going to UNLEARN rather than learn.

Physicians are service-oriented by nature. But we MUST unlearn the concept of serving for free. And this is not so we can live a lavish lifestyle but because earning is critical to keeping our businesses open! 

So if you're connecting the dots here, you're seeing you must earn to continue to serve. If you truly want to continue serving patients or clients—and more patients and clients!—it's essential to your business' survival to get paid. 

Stop working for free. 

You might think you're not working for free, but it's time to take a good, hard look. 

For example, you're working for free if you don't require pay at the time of service. (Billing later doesn't work and requires time and money spent to follow up.) 

You're working for free if your client paid for a 5-session package and you're throwing in some extra sessions just because. 

You're working for free if you have a DPC practice and make yourself available all the time. Your time is worth A LOT,  and they're getting it for nothing!

Every minute spent working for free is time taken away from family, personal growth, and self-care. Physicians must consider the opportunity cost of working for free.

Working for free is expensive and prevents business growth and financial freedom. Physicians, we must stop working for free and start owning our value as physician entrepreneurs.

You will experience storms as you build your business.

When you find yourself in the middle of one, make sure you hang on tight to your vision. Don't let it go in the storm.

You will weather the storm and get back to working toward your vision—as long as you don't lose sight of it.

This is the first thing I tell EntreMD Business School students going through a storm. You cannot lose sight of your vision.

During a storm is the time to go all in and do what you can to retain that picture. I'll tell you some of the things I've done and some of the things I've taught my clients to do to hang on to that picture in this episode. You'll LOVE my strategies!

Physicians have what it takes to be the BEST entrepreneurs.

Why?

Because we have staying power. We have the ability to stick with something over time to accomplish a greater goal.

For many of us, it took a whole decade to become a physician. We took the time necessary to build those muscles little by little until we became physician bodybuilders!

And that's the exact same concept and dedication it takes for entrepreneurs to flourish.

Everything is tied to the kind of muscles we build. If you do things the lazy way or you choose to let worry take over, you are building laziness and worry.

But if you persevere through the tough and scary things, you're building that muscle of discipline.

You want to keep this image of a bodybuilder in mind. We are all bodybuilders, but the question is what kinds of muscles are we building? Do I have this body that's made of muscles of laziness, worry, inconsistency, procrastinating on marketing, procrastinating on selling, not putting myself out there, yielding to fear?

Or have I chosen to build muscle around the concepts of consistency, discipline, confidence, effort, and success?

Every time we make a decision, we are contributing to a muscle being built—and we have the power to use those muscles to our advantage in business! I show you how in this episode The EntreMD Podcast. Let's do this!

The law of gravity is that everything that goes up must come down.

When you start making breakthroughs in your business, there will be a gravitational pull to get you back to where you used to be.

When this happens, think about airplanes. They stay up even though gravity pulls down.

How?

Airplanes engage another law that is superior to the law of gravity, and that is the law of lift. The law of lift helps the plane overcome gravity.

Who knew two days could have such transformative power?!

Two days was the length of the recent EntreMD Business School Mastermind I held in Atlanta, and WOW! What a two days it was! I jotted down 5 lessons I learned and cannot wait to share them with you here.

First of all, what you already know has the capacity to change your life. It's not always about accumulating more concepts, ideas, etc. We re-examined my tried-and-true transformational concepts and dove into them deeper. We leaned into our mindset to implement and/or audit what's getting in the way. It was incredible the impact this alone had. And that's just the beginning!

We went on to discover just how much our mindset is responsible for our results. Part of that is having a growth mindset where you go to meetings and conferences hungry for transformation.

I always say your network is your net worth, and this was very much the case at the mastermind. It was the most incredible room to be in. When it comes time to invest in yourself, whether that's going to masterminds like ours or joining EBS, your mind will play elaborate tricks on you—telling you it's not necessary or you don't deserve it. Forget that! You are your highest-performing asset! Of course you deserve the support you need to follow your dreams!

I am not an advocate for physicians leaving medicine.

What I am is an advocate for physicians practicing medicine on their terms, which might look like owning a private practice or individual weight loss coaching or courses for physician financials.

I want you to do what you want to do, doctors!

Whatever you do, you will want to make sure your business can function without you. I know you don't want to step away or sell it right now, but building a business that is sellable makes it an asset. And that means you have options.

I want doctors to have options!

Imagine building a business on something you love and then being able to love it even more because you get it to a place where it can run without you so you can ... travel every month, take a year sabbatical, operate it from a distance, or even sell it and retire!

Yes, this is possible. I am living it.

Do I think of selling my practice right now? No. Do I take comfort in knowing I have options? YES! I've been away from it for 17 months, so I know it won't fall apart (it's actually grown since I made my move from practicing physician to CEO!).

Think about the things you find yourself saying to your patients or clients. Do you ever tell them to take all the time they need? How about assuring them they can call anytime?

I get it; you want to be always available to everyone for as long as they need because you're a physician with a service-first orientation to the world.

But in actuality, you're just lying to your patients and yourself when you say things like that.

You simply *can't* be available all the time for any amount of time—even if only 10% of your panel take you up on it. It's just not sustainable.

And when you set up your business in a way that's not sustainable, it inevitably leads to the opposite—rather than serving, you're headed toward shutting down one way or another.

Keep your sanity AND keep your doors open by building clear boundaries that allow you to feasibly do your best work for those you serve. It's really a win-win because your people are getting the best you, and you're fulfilled knowing you're giving the best you.
