There’s a significant difference between working on your business and working in your business. What got you into entrepreneurship, like your passion and ambition, won’t get you through entrepreneurship. Roadblocks, setbacks, and unexpected adversities are going to come and may lead you to lose faith and patience.

You don’t have to build a bigger business. But as a business owner, it’s your role to build a better business. This means creating the time and space to do the things you’re most passionate about while implementing the systems and team to support it. All the success you achieve begins with you.

On this episode we’re joined by Justyn Ashlee Green, a former client turned colleague. She’s now the Strategic Growth Advisor and Director of Practice Management at KLC, and has always felt naturally drawn to working in this industry. In 2020, she got the opportunity to go into a six-week bootcamp and was introduced to me on the first day.

There are so many capable and intelligent business owners out there, but many of them lack the resources they need to reach the level of success they desire. Hiring an expert who knows how to build the business can completely transform the way you run your business in the best ways.

Even if you’re fully capable of running everything in your business, you have to ask yourself if this is where your time is best spent. It is so beneficial to have someone else running critical aspects of the business so you can focus on being the CEO and creating a vision by which to lead your team.

One of the things Justyn has noticed about practice managers is that all the best ones claim they would rather do it themselves. However, they acknowledge the importance of delegation and efficiency. Another important part of the Practice Manager role is having the ability to anticipate the needs of both the practice and the owner.

If Justyn could go back in time, she would invest more time communicating with others and less time taking on tasks blindly. At times she felt stressed out, overwhelmed, and unappreciated, but she takes accountability for putting herself in this position. This is why she emphasizes the importance of checking in and leaning on people. Practice Management is a big job, but no one expects you to do it without boundaries or on your own.

As we face the potential of a global recession, we also have to come to consider the possibility that the clients we love will be closing their wallet on aesthetic treatments. Navigating this situation comes down to focusing on how you can cultivate abundance.

I am being inundated with unsolicited sales pitches on strategies for cutting back on ads and spending less on marketing, but to me this is clearly not the way through. Let’s be proactive about focusing on your team and your market share rather than cutting back, which can actually hurt your brand positioning in the long term.

By looking at the research around recessions, you can make informed decisions about your products and services. Money doesn’t go away during a recession—it actually represents a different type of redistribution of wealth. You can actually use this to the advantage of your business.

Another factor to keep in mind is that whether there’s a recession or not, people’s values don’t change. The clients coming to you for the amazing results you provide won’t suddenly stop seeing this as a priority. It’s also not a good practice to discount your prices, as switching back to your full or regular price afterwards can be an uphill battle.

The decisions you make today will impact your business for years to come, including when the recession is over. Protect your brand at all costs. Today we’re going to talk about a stage of business you may be in the midst of, or in the midst of denial towards: growth plateaus. Many of the women we work with are leaders who are transitioning out of the worker role and into a visionary role for their business. It’s important to begin implementing the right systems and processes in order to fully make this transition.

As an entrepreneur, you are hardwired to move towards the next plateau. But the truth is, you usually need to slow down and assess what needs to be in place before you can scale or grow your business sustainably.

No business owner wants to acknowledge a slow-growth year. It doesn’t sound sexy. But it’s okay to spend a year, or however long is necessary, to implement the right systems, building your team, readjusting your infrastructure, realigning your strategy, or reflecting on your core values.

Plateaus usually occur during or soon after a business hits a maturity stage in the business lifecycle. There are four stages: expansion, peak, contraction, and trough. You can reach a plateau at any of these stages, and they can happen intentionally or unintentionally.

Managing a growth plateau all comes down to mindset. You have to be able to anticipate and prepare for growth. You also have to accept any failure as learned growth. It’s crucial to derive your sense of value from building your business, not just the revenue that’s generated from it. Don’t let your ego stop you from stepping back so you can slingshot forward.

It’s been so exciting to watch the aesthetics industry evolve over the past 12 years. When I started, we didn’t have nearly as much technology as we do today. Back in the day when resumes were the only way to promote yourself, it was really frowned upon to exaggerate your value. Today, with social media, that happens all the time.

Working with influencers in this space is a big thing, but what if you are the influencer? What even makes providers in our industry influential? There’s a spectrum of opinions about whether our industry is justifiably glamorizing the right people, or if big pharma politics are at play.

I often hear comments about how the right people aren’t being recognized for their brilliance in our industry, as one example. At what point is a comment like this based on legitimacy, and at what point is envy skewing our opinion? I do believe it’s a fact that Instagram follower counts and celebrity status weighs heavily on the decisions of who is invited to speak at conferences.

On the flip side, influencers believe that authentic influence is cultivated through expression of an independent philosophy. Often, companies come to them to celebrate the influencer’s adoption of their products and to learn about how their products are being used. Doesn’t it make good business sense for the company to go to an influencer to do this?

There really are valid points on both sides. At the end of the day, success is so individual. Being recognized for your work may have nothing to do with popularity. If your goal is to gain exposure, it’s wise to take advantage of opportunities that align with your core values. Just don’t lose your voice.

In this week’s bonus episode, I’m re-sharing a very important message. Do you have a practice manager overseeing your day-to-day operations? A business owner wears so many hats, so it can be worthwhile to hire someone to handle the managing side of things. This means your role can be more autonomous and flexible and free you up to focus on the other parts of your business that really matter.

A manager can help you create systems that help your business run more efficiently so you can step out of your role as provider and into your role as CEO. But remember that when it comes to hiring a practice manager, you get what you pay for. It’s worth investing in someone who really embodies what you want.

We so often overlook the value of a great practice manager. When you find a good one, make sure you support them in the ways they need to run the business optimally. It’s a dynamic role that may need more support than you know, and in different ways than you might have considered.

So how can you expand your relationship with your practice manager? First, have their back. Your team needs to know your manager is a direct representative of you. You should also try to make every important meeting. Not every meeting, but every important one.

Another way to expand this relationship is to praise the good as much as you acknowledge the bad. Celebrate the small wins in formalized ways with intentional focus. Lastly, manage your micromanagement. If they are competent and trusted, it may be time to let them do the work without micromanagement.

Your energy is a resource you should measure. As a business owner, it’s so important to be aware of how the actions, activities, and people in your life influence you. Do they drain you, or do they recharge you? It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day operations and forget to invest in your own growth.

I’m recording this episode on the road while on a solo retreat. Booking a quarterly solo retreat can provide you with the perfect opportunity to recharge and reflect. It’s a powerful move that allows you to step out of the grind and be in a nourishing space where you can focus on you. It’s a catalytic investment into your energetic wellbeing, which helps you grow into the person you need to be to lead your team and get to the next level.

One way that taking time for yourself can help you is with public speaking. You’re closer than you think to becoming the powerhouse speaker you dream of being. Taking your own space for growth can help you build a dynamic speech that inspires your audience to take action. Finding a great communicator and breaking down their style can also help with this too.

Audiences respond to simple messages that convey the bigger picture. It’s better to focus on the outcome of your main point rather than the process. Definitely know your facts and use data to strengthen your speech and create context. General ideas provoke thought, but specific analytics command attention.

Perhaps most importantly, utilize the power of stories. Evoke a visual experience. Captivate others during your first impression using your body language and eye contact to work the room. The way you carry yourself can do a lot in making the audience feel seen, heard, and appreciated.

If you’re trying to transition out of being hands-on in every place of your business, you’re not alone. So many capable women are building thriving businesses, but then feel their support systems and teams don’t necessarily expand alongside the company. I recently chatted with a client in exactly this position who felt confronted by an entitled, long-standing employee.

When an employee begins to believe they deserve privileged treatment, it can create a toxic environment and friction between that person and everyone around them. Employee entitlement is a real thing. Knowing your worth is one thing, but assuming you should have more on one side of the value exchange is another.

There are four entitlement factors to look for in your employees, one of the big ones being money. Entitled employees don’t necessarily factor in the impact on the business when they make their requests. Another one is business insights, or feeling like they should be consulted before business decisions are made.

Entitlement also comes up in the form of “hall passes.” This looks like someone not following a system or process quite as thoroughly as everyone else. But if you really want to foster a healthy working environment, the rules need to be upheld by all team members. The last and fourth factor is education: the person who feels they deserve to learn more on the dime of the company.

Communication is key in putting a stop to this behaviour in its tracks. Be transparent about your expenses and overhead. Address the entitlement instead of avoiding it or rewarding it. Providing clear job descriptions and annual reviews can help you avoid these issues before they start. Or, even better, avoid hiring entitled workers in the first place by asking the right questions.

Once you’ve set up the practical parts of your business and you’ve nailed the client experience, you’ll notice you need answers to more high-level questions. A coach is there to answer your questions and hold you accountable—something that can be helpful when you’re already the boss.

Thought partnership is another powerful reason to engage in coaching. It helps to have someone you can share business-related thoughts and ideas with. Your coach is an expert without a hidden agenda and their success is tied to yours, so you’re both working towards the same goal.

What about consulting? In coaching, you utilize a wide range of tools to enhance your own capabilities. Consulting is more about focusing on solving one specific problem. Coaching teaches you the skills to catch your own fish; consulting is having someone go with you to catch the fish. Coaching also tends to be more customized to each individual.
