Dr. Joel Warsh (aka DrJoelGator)

What is GLP-1?

• GLP-1 stands for Glucagon-Like Peptide-1.
• It is an incretin hormone produced in the gut, specifically in the intestines, in response to food intake.

Functions of GLP-1

• Blood Sugar Regulation: GLP-1 stimulates the pancreas to release insulin in response to eating, which helps lower blood sugar levels. It also inhibits the release of glucagon, a hormone that raises blood sugar levels.
• Appetite Control: GLP-1 slows down gastric emptying, meaning it takes longer for food to leave the stomach. This helps increase feelings of fullness and reduce appetite.
• Cardiovascular Benefits: Emerging research suggests GLP-1 may have protective effects on the heart, including improving cardiac function and reducing inflammation.
