In this episode of The Profitable Photographer, I’m thrilled to catch up with Kelly Warkentin, a lifestyle family photographer in Vancouver, Canada, mom of three, and one of my proudest coaching success stories. Kelly has not only built a thriving photography business but also created a work-life balance that lets her focus on her family and her clients.
When we started working together, Kelly was selling digital files for hundreds of dollars. Through my training program (and her hard work implementing the strategies), she discovered the power of selling heirloom art and albums in person, transforming her sales into thousands. Now, she’s adapted my system to develop her own Virtual IPS approach, helping busy photographers serve their clients with exceptional care while reclaiming their time.
Here’s what we cover:
Kelly’s story is a testament to the power of mentorship, innovation, and courage. Tune in for actionable insights and plenty of inspiration!

Here we go again...another great guest and conversation on The Profitable Photographer with Luci Dumas! I’m so excited to introduce you to Jen Hargrove, an award-winning fine art photographer specializing in character portraits, pets, children, and abstract waterscapes. With 12 years under her belt, Jen’s earned titles like Master Photographer and Certified Professional Photographer.
Jen share some eye opening practices that have helped her business success grow through print competitions, and she’s mastered the art of turning mini-sessions into high-profit opportunities. And guess what? These mini- sessions are primarily of men transformed into unique characters like soldiers, firemen, or sea captains. Wives and mothers love these!
Here’s what you’ll learn:
Final thought is that our industry is not saturated. Don’t be afraid to teach others but stay in your lane. She wants to see everybody giving back to other photographers.

Hello new and loyal listeners. This episode is from the “Way Back” machine from 2019. I still have the resistance challenge, and I thought you would enjoy it again as well, or for the first time.
Are you like me? Are there a million great ideas to help you grow your business, and simple tasks on your "To Do" list that you struggle with completing or even starting?
This is called "Resistance", everyone experiences it and it can be conquered day by day.
In this episode, Luci discusses:
Key Takeaways:
“Creative work is not a selfish act or a bid for attention on the part of the actor. It's a gift to the world and every being in it. Don't cheat us of your contribution. Give us what you've got.” Steven Pressfield

In this solo episode, I share my experience shopping for a new purse, and illustrate many of the points I love to share about how to communicate value and create that luxury experience for potential clients. How we can take someone from a warm lead to someone wanting what we offer and are willing to invest well to receive it?
I needed a new purse. I don’t care about brand names but I like function and quality. After a less-than-stellar experience at Macy’s and a pleasant but almost hands-off visit to Nordstrom, I walked into a Coach store that just has handbags and such, where the display and personal service were on another level. The salesperson listened to my wants and needs, and guided me through a few options, their quality and features, and I found myself falling in love with an item I didn’t even consider in my search.
It was a masterclass in the art of customer care and becoming a trusted advisor—a lesson every photographer can apply when selling their own work.
Some of the takeaways to listen for are…•
Tune in to learn how to elevate your in-person sales and create a luxury experience for your clients, just like Coach did for Luci.

In this episode, I have an awesome chat with the super-talented Pete Coco, a successful headshot and portrait photographer. We dive into the nitty-gritty of starting your photography business, and yeah, it can be overwhelming. But Pete’s advice? Don’t worry—just start!
Pete specializes in headshots and portraits and is based in Garden City, New York, providing high-quality photography services to individuals from various industries, including business professionals, realtors, lawyers, doctors, actors, and models.
He also is a mentor and has a YouTube channel with 30,000 subscribers, where he talks about photography, gear reviews, and all sorts of things.
Pete shares so much valuable wisdom, including:
• The importance of finding a mentor who truly understands your vision.
• Staying passionate about the type of photography you want to do every day and creating work you love and want to be paid for.
• Embracing failure as a learning tool, instead of fearing it.
Pete also introduced us to his "CoCo Trio"—the perfect blend of work, business, and mindset. Mastering all three is essential for success. Plus, he drops some book recommendations like The Motivation Manifesto by Brendon Burchard, Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl, and the Tao Te Ching for extra inspiration.
His final gem? It’s never too late to start, and your photography doesn’t have to be the best in the world—it just needs to get started. You can catch Pete live at the Imaging Expo in Texas through Professional Photographers of America.
Bonus: Download any of Pete's free videos, and he’ll share five of his all-time favorite portrait tips!

Hey lovely listeners! I am delighted to share my conversation with the fabulous Tanya Goodall Smith.
She has been on the show two other times and this time, she has a wonderful new book we are going to chat about, “The Introvert's Guide To Personal Branding: How To Put Yourself Out There Without Changing Who You Are”. It is a great read and wow, did it open my eyes to the power of introverts in the photography world!
It also goes deep into the topic of personal branding, which is a great tool to be seen and known without having to do what the extroverts do to get positive attention.
You can trust her guidance as the founder of WorkStory Creative, an agency that helps introverts who are evolving their business create an elevated brand vision and bring it to life. She has 20 years of experience at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, designing for with international brands like HP, Disney and GUESS. And is a Brand Builder’s Group Certified Personal Branding Strategist.
Key takeaways from our conversation:
• Introverts as Superstars: How introverted tendencies can be turned into advantages for success.
• Famous Introverts: Even some well-known performers and photographers are introverts who've learned to thrive.
• Overcoming Fear: The fear of being on camera or criticized can be tamed by focusing on the value you're bringing.
• Feel the Fear & Do It Anyway: Tanya's mantra for introverts looking to step out of their comfort zones.
• Power of Personal Branding: How a strong brand can communicate for you when you’re not keen on the spotlight.
As always, thanks for subscribing, commenting, and sharing your thoughts.
