Jayson is joined by Shiloh, a forensic and law enforcement psychologist and host of the true crime podcast, L.A. Not So Confidential. Forensic psychologists play a much broader and more nuanced role in law enforcement and criminal justice. At its core, forensic psychology is the practice of psychology as it applies to the law and it's a way to bring behavioral scientific knowledge and methods to help answer questions arising in criminal, civil, contractual and other judicial proceedings. They research they evaluate and testify on topics such as eyewitness testimony, competency to stand trial and evaluating insanity.
Forensic psychologists also play a role as jury consultants reducing systemic racism in the criminal justice system, assessing military veterans for service related compensation and supporting the mental health of law enforcement officers and detectives.
They discuss the true role of criminal psychologists in the criminal justice system, how they support law enforcement and others who often experience some form of trauma, the value of forensic psychology and its limits, her podcast and where the television and movie portrayals get it right and get it wrong.

In this episode, Jayson is joined by Robert Parmer, the host to The Broken Systems Podcast, a podcast focused on bringing justice to those who deserve it. The people whose cases are derailed for a variety of reasons, whether it's tunnel vision, their socioeconomic backgrounds, their mental health, the neighborhood they live in, internal problems with law enforcement or just plain laziness.
Robert is not a journalist or a lawyer or a politician or a former FBI agent. But the first season of The Broken Systems Podcast has led to a significant impact on bringing attention and putting pressure on law enforcement to solve a case in Georgia that was beset by law enforcement. In fighting in this case in a small northern Georgia County, it would have likely not have been solved without people like Robert.
We're going to talk about that case and more and how to fix the system.

Jayson is joined by John Cleghorn who is the pastor of Caldwell Presbyterian Church in the Elizabeth neighborhood of Charlotte, North Carolina. John has served at Caldwell since 2008 where he's the minister and head of staff at the church. Caldwell is a progressive mission-oriented church at the time when participation in the church and all sorts of religious organizations in America has declined, Caldwell has experienced some unusual growth. John came to the ministry later in life after retiring from a position as a senior vice president for Bank of America, where he served in various public policy and public relations roles.
At a time when church membership in America has declined to 47% in 2020 from 70% in 2000, John writes about the remarkable turnaround of Caldwell which was on the edge of closure when John became the Pastor. John traded his position at the corporate office of the nation's largest retail bank for the dusty, dated office at Caldwell. John writes a message about how churches can survive and even be resurrected at the intersections of race, sexuality, class and faith. John proposes creating something new and John tells a story not just about the turnaround of Caldwell, but also about his personal transformation.

In this episode, Jayson is joined by Kevin Joseph Grogan, who is a former Savannah Chatham metropolitan police department homicide detective who has a reputation as a straight shooter, who cares passionately about public safety and the people in the mostly poor minority and dangerous neighborhoods that for twelve years he was sworn to protect. Kevin has traded his badge and gun in for a pen and now is the author of two books. The 2018 book Black Sheep White Cop and the 2022 book Ruffian.
They discuss the type of people who go into law enforcement, the price they pay not just physically but mentally and emotionally, the stigma that prevents so many of those officers from getting the treatment they need and the anxiety and its impact on their performance in the field.
Jayson and Kevin discuss the toll that being a police officer took on Kevin's personal life and the reason why he's taken to writing both as a form of therapy and as a way to promote a better way of policing.
Listen to part one with Kevin Grogan here.

We discuss the type of people who go into law enforcement, the price they pay not just physically but mentally and emotionally, the stigma that prevents so many officers from getting the treatment they need and the anxiety and its impact on their performance in the field. We're also going to talk about what we can learn from the past few years to help us find a better way to police and be policed and at a time when so much attention is focused on the criminal justice system, how we might be missing the mark, particularly when it comes to the trauma on both sides of the equation that have left the police and the communities they are supposed to serve unmoored and untethered from this collective sense of meaning.

In this collaboration with The Science of Personality Podcast, Jayson joins Ryne Sherman and Blake Loepp of Hogan Assessments to talk about "Coaching the Whole Person." The coaching profession has long said that it focuses on the whole person, but the mental health of Jayson’s clients during the pandemic suggests that maybe coaches haven’t been doing the best job of practicing that approach.

When it comes to team effectiveness, getting along does not always result in getting ahead. Sure, it’s nice when a team can work together in perfect harmony, but not at the expense of overall effectiveness. If you undergo a medical procedure, would you prefer the healthcare professionals in the room be friends or get the job done correctly? If your favorite sports team is winning championships, does it matter to you if they spend quality time together outside of the sport?
In this collaboration, Jayson joins the hosts of The Science of Personality, Ryne Sherman and Blake Loepp of Hogan Assessments, to discuss the most important components and qualities of an effective team. Join us to learn how you can build your dream team!
