Do you get scared or anxious from ordinary things in your life?

We tend to fall into patterns to keep ourselves safe, or so we think. It can keep us prisoners in our own bodies.

This week's episode came as an anonymous request through my weekly newsletter, Tuesday Talks With Phylis (link in bio to sign up or head to my website!).

Let’s talk about the do’s and don’ts of letting our children be a part of our mothers’ lives and what do you do when your toxic mom wants to be a part of your children’s lives?

Can we let them have a relationship with their grandchildren even though we have a dysfunctional one? If there is a special relationship that your mom has with her grandchildren, you can set a boundary around it. But if she isn’t respectful of your rules or intentions then I think you need to set some limits.

Listen to your kids! If they are not comfortable being around her, respect that too. Your children will find their voice if they feel safe with you and know how to speak up. Don’t use your kids as pawns in this family game. Listen and watch. 

We are not trying to be cold mamas that just cut off our moms for no reason. There is no easy answer to each individual situation, and I won’t be someone who will say “Do it this way or else!” 

What I know about God is that He will take things we don’t understand and do what he plans all along. We can’t be in control of every little thing, but we can have hope that maybe our children’s relationships can be beautiful. If not, then we can be the safety for them that they need to stay away from someone who could hurt them. 

The choice is ours, with prayer, common sense, and thought. I’m praying you find peace with all of this!

Pretty much everyone I have met has a childhood story, good or bad. 

When you can understand the story as a whole, then you can start digging into the deeper parts. Do you tend to blame one person? These are some of the things to think about if you want to start doing deep work. I made one specific person the ‘villain’, until I started learning through my newest schooling that there is more to the story.

One of the thrills of becoming a trauma-informed coach is being able to work with clients and really get to the heart of the things that were keeping them stuck, and almost every time it’s your childhood story. But who is in that story? And is it one person, or many?

Do you have a strong opinion on divorce? 

Once again, we see another well known speaker/author come out to say he has been having an affair (although I would say it’s a second life at this point). Now the question for his wife becomes, “Should I divorce him?” 

At this point, their kids are all grown, but it got me thinking about what you would do if you were in this situation with small kids and your faith is such that it mourns divorce so badly. 

Does it come from your childhood or a religious belief? We all want to judge, but let's talk about why this is and how we can be more compassionate, not cruel.

Let’s get real about what motherhood entails. It can be the most important time in a woman's life, but it can also be the most confusing time. I wanted to get my youngest, Dominique’s, opinion since she is a new mom this year!

What can be a beautiful time can also be the hardest time in a woman’s life. You add to that anyone out there that is “Unmothered” either by a toxic mom or if your mom has passed, this can lead to some really emotional times.

Let’s get into the basics of what it takes to become a new mom, and then maybe dive deeper into what it actually feels like with the support and without the support.

Do you ever look back at the younger you and feel sadness? 

Are you afraid to make changes now because it is comfortable staying in this place, even though it makes you mourn what could have been? The journey to start changing some of the habits and hurts in which you came from can be tricky. Some of those old ways are easy on some level, and changing everything around can spin your head! 

Don’t be afraid of change! Let’s explore what happens when you start the process of getting into a healthy place but wonder if it’s too hard or too scary with the “unknowns”.

As we start the new year, I think this is an interesting topic to talk about. What kind of rooms do you want to be a part of? What is your worth? Where do you want to shine?

Lately, I’ve been seeing a lot of posts about being sure to surround yourself with a few good people you can trust, and also knowing which circles to be in. It is really about knowing your worth and being confident (sometimes for the first time) and not looking for outside affirmation. 

This is sometimes hard when you haven’t been shown self-esteem or confidence in yourself.  I think we can agree that God is the only one who can help you feel your best as He walks with you to show you what true “self-confidence” looks like, but let's explore how we can get there on our own.
