How many moms raised their kids in the 90’s purity culture?
I sure did, and while I did it with good intentions if I could go back in time, I would have done some things differently. One thing I did do was keep the lines of communication open with my daughters so they knew they could always come and talk to me about anything.
Listen in as I discuss this meaty topic that may be an unpopular opinion with some, but may help others with a great way to talk to your kids about life issues.

What do you do when your mother bad-mouths your in-laws and you tell your husband and now she is angry with you?
Well, let's track the reason why she felt the need to talk about them in a cruel manner in the first place. Sometimes we can trust our moms with private information, and sometimes we absolutely can not! In this episode, we will explore this topic from a mom who is dysfunctional and does not have your best interest at heart.

Today, we are discussing the “winter arc,” or the last three months of the year, and how we can reset anything that hasn’t worked so far.
Just as the leaves change color and fall away, it is also a time for fresh growth. We can do the same with this year's old habits. We can restart and move away from the things that need new growth.
This is the thing with the beginning of a new year. We get to dig in and lay low but also regroup and rethink about what's to come. We can start to dream and pray for new beginnings! The good thing about life is it is ever-changing.

Do you do things in your marriage because it’s what you saw growing up or are you doing things differently because of seeing it go wrong for your parents?
So many times we inadvertently do the traditional roles like our parents did. Even if those things are unhealthy, how do we know how to do it differently? Will it blow up in our faces if we ask for what we want in this relationship?
These are things we should be talking about before we walk down the aisle, but if we haven’t, it’s not too late, in fact, I would say, you are right on time! Be brave and know that if it works for you and your husband it doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s marriage. If it keeps you both happy and content, that is a win in my book! Listen in as I talk about what Mike and I do that keeps us both happy in our marriage roles.

Something that’s weighed heavy on my mind lately, is the subject of grief or sadness and how most people are so uncomfortable sitting with themselves and others through it. How do we get to where we are not rushed through this journey? We will all experience loss, sadness, and grief in our lifetime. Let’s get better at understanding it and helping others to feel loved and heard when it happens.

In this episode, we chatted with Jessica Van Roekel about rejection and how it seeps into our childhoods and adult lives. What happens when you start believing the lies that rejection can bring? And what does God want you to feel about rejection? Listen in as we discuss how it can affect friendships, careers, and the lens of how we see others.
Jessica Van Roekel loves the upside-down life of following Jesus as she journeys to wholeness through brokenness. As an author, speaker, and worship pastor, she uses her gifts and experiences to share God’s transformative power to rescue, restore, and renew. She longs for you to know that rejection doesn’t have to define or determine your future when placed in God’s healing hands. Jessica and her husband have two adult daughters spreading their wings, a son in college and a high school daughter, fluttering their wings as they edge closer to the nest. I was so excited to talk with my new friend Kim Hardy today. This episode dives deep into mental health and how to recognize the incorrect narratives we have for ourselves. She is an author and speaker passionate about giving women hope through Biblical truth. She seeks to inspire, renew, and restore hurting women so they can thrive and live joy-filled lives. Kim loves to read, write, and spend time outdoors. She is married to her knight in shining armor who keeps her laughing.
I hope you enjoyed this episode peeps, and if you want to connect with Kim head to her website or Facebook page!

This week's episode came as an anonymous request through my weekly newsletter, Tuesday Talks With Phylis (link in bio to sign up or head to my website!).
Let’s talk about the do’s and don’ts of letting our children be a part of our mothers’ lives and what do you do when your toxic mom wants to be a part of your children’s lives?
Can we let them have a relationship with their grandchildren even though we have a dysfunctional one? If there is a special relationship that your mom has with her grandchildren, you can set a boundary around it. But if she isn’t respectful of your rules or intentions then I think you need to set some limits.
Listen to your kids! If they are not comfortable being around her, respect that too. Your children will find their voice if they feel safe with you and know how to speak up. Don’t use your kids as pawns in this family game. Listen and watch.
We are not trying to be cold mamas that just cut off our moms for no reason. There is no easy answer to each individual situation, and I won’t be someone who will say “Do it this way or else!”
What I know about God is that He will take things we don’t understand and do what he plans all along. We can’t be in control of every little thing, but we can have hope that maybe our children’s relationships can be beautiful. If not, then we can be the safety for them that they need to stay away from someone who could hurt them.
The choice is ours, with prayer, common sense, and thought. I’m praying you find peace with all of this!
