Do you ever look back at the younger you and feel sadness? 

Are you afraid to make changes now because it is comfortable staying in this place, even though it makes you mourn what could have been? The journey to start changing some of the habits and hurts in which you came from can be tricky. Some of those old ways are easy on some level, and changing everything around can spin your head! 

Don’t be afraid of change! Let’s explore what happens when you start the process of getting into a healthy place but wonder if it’s too hard or too scary with the “unknowns”.

As we start the new year, I think this is an interesting topic to talk about. What kind of rooms do you want to be a part of? What is your worth? Where do you want to shine?

Lately, I’ve been seeing a lot of posts about being sure to surround yourself with a few good people you can trust, and also knowing which circles to be in. It is really about knowing your worth and being confident (sometimes for the first time) and not looking for outside affirmation. 

This is sometimes hard when you haven’t been shown self-esteem or confidence in yourself.  I think we can agree that God is the only one who can help you feel your best as He walks with you to show you what true “self-confidence” looks like, but let's explore how we can get there on our own.

I recently was a guest on the Counter Culture Podcast with host Tina Griffin and was able to share so much of my story! 

Phylis Mantelli was raised in a violent and abusive home with a mother who didn’t know how to show love or kindness. With so much trauma and pain in her past, Phylis felt lost for many years and dealt with her hurtful past in unhealthy ways - but God wasn’t finished with her story! Today, Phylis is an author and speaker, and she recounts her story of surviving her mother’s abusive behavior as a child and later, as an adult, breaking through the pain of that abuse and trauma to become a daughter who forgave her mom and recognized that God loved them both. She talks about the “body, mind, and spirit” connection in spiritual and mental health, and details the 16-year journey that led her to not only forgive her mother but also love her.

Part of breaking generational dysfunction is to stop allowing the excuse of, “But it’s your family.” 

When do we stick by family because it’s family, and when do we have to decide on something better? Over the years I’ve come to a realization that loving families show up and it’s a safe place, not a place that makes you more miserable when you are around them.

Knowing that unless THEY (your mom or family member) want to repent and change AND show that difference over time, you are not required to “hang in there”. That serves no purpose and you will never change the dynamic of your future life or family.

Stand strong in this journey of breaking generational dysfunction.
